I used to be keen on the Russian pre-dreadnoughts and have a small file of data and plans, but gave them up out of frustration and lack of documentation. Now that that the commies are gone (sort of, anyway) can anyone recommend sources for books, plans and photos of these ships? Cheers Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: AllenFW2@aol.com Subject: Re: Heller Hood versus Lindberg Hood Heller's kit of Hood is not one of their better efforts. It's rather under-detailed and somewhat oversimplified. Even so, it is far superior to the Lindberg kit in overall quality and accuracy. The Lindberg kit is essentially a large motorized child's toy with a vague resemblance to Hood. Both would make interesting candidates for a "super-detailing" project though! You can see photos of a completed Lindberg kit (and a pseudo-review of the kit) posted on-line in the Scale Modeling section of "Battlecruiser Hood: The HMS Hood On-line Resource." It's located at the following address: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Workshop/2966/ Frank Allen Colorado Springs, CO, USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Mark Krywienko Subject: Askold name With regard to the Askold, I would like to add this story to add a little humanism to our subject. My GrandFather who served as a lifetime professional sailor in the English Navy, used to say that the Askold was known locally amongst the sailors as 'The Packet of WoodBine' because of her 5 funnels. WoodBine being a popular brand of cigarette at that time used to come in packs of 5. I have done research for Archer Transfers so they can produce dry transfer signal flags. In my research I found all the signal flags in use by all countries of the world. Each flag has a clear and definite meaning. I have seen photos of ships that were flying many signal flags. They can't have all that stuff going on all at once can they? Do the flags have a different meaning when combined in different ways? I need to know so Archer can add a few examples to their instruction sheet. I found the national and international signal flags and their definitions on the US Navy web site: http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/communications/flags/flags.html . It only mentions the flag's individual meaning. I would like more than one answer to this so to verify the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can you give me the address for Heller (or Humbrol)? I need to get a set of instructions for their sailing ship model "Chebec" which I believe is 1:100 scale model (I lost the original ones) Thanks Chuck Race -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Mike Jackson" Subject: Floquil Marine paints via the mail Anyone know where I can still buy Floquil Marine paints mail order? I've just finished to read the last 12 SMML or so, as the influenza and the holidays alike prevented me to make many things, among them to finish some models (here in Spain the 6th January is traditionally the day for the gifts -Los Reyes Magos, The Wise Men-) Following our business, regarding the question made by John Werler about how to make torpedo nets, there's a method in Model Shipwright 91, exposed by R. Lefevbre regarding his SMS Viribus Unitis. If you are interested, I can try to send you by e-mail. As for the CMB (Ken Goldman), in Model Shipwright 96 there's a Modeller's Draught article (by D. White) concerning them. Sorely the interior is sparse: a seat and a footrest for the helmsman, a chart table, a compass table and a slated seat over the petrol tank-nothing about gratings or torpedo aiming devices. And something like a horn on the portside of the cockpit. From the plans it seems that the mooring devices consist in a cleat over the bow and a mooring bit over the starboard quarter. Also, If you want the details I can e-mail them. For Zapper: havew you tried the U-Boat Net? http://uboat.net/ For John Burch: Our Navy has the same ceremonial listed yet: Ensign and Jack raised in the morning, lowered at the sunset. Ensign on the flagstaff while in port, and in gaff at the sea. BTW our Jackstaff (Torrotito) consist of the quarters of our National Coat of Arms: the Arms of the former Kingdoms of Castilla, León, Aragón and Navarra. If anynoe is interested I can send acopy. And a curiosity: anyone of you has seen the movie ANASTASIA? My daughters got a copy as a present and when I saw the liner(?) which transports Anastasia and Dimitri to Le Havre immediately I remember the Revell's Emden or Dresden. There are someone out there with same feelings? Now, I know that cats shed hair, but I don't think that the same is true of whiskers. So, does he cut them off with scissors, or yank them out with pliers? Does he use the rest of the cat too? Seems a shame to throw away the whole cat. I would think that after one experience with this guy, cats must give him a wide berth! Say, this guy doesn't happen to make little people for his models with real looking skin does he????? Is it waterline or full hull? Also I remember seeing on Revell website a 1/700 Spruance that seem to suggest that the kit may offer in German 4 different versions. Would these be the known versions already offered by SKYWAVE, DML and SHANGAI-DRAGON which comes to 3? What would the 4th version be? I have a question about prewar (W.W.II) USN ship colors. The Battleships, cruisers didn't have hull numbers on them. Yet I've seen a picture with 2 cruisers that have on their turrets. Was this the standard for the whole fleet? Lastly about an old TV show I remember as a kid. Does any one remember Diver Dan or when it was on? I think it was the early60's and remember reruns in the late 60's. Thanks Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: 1941 USS Tennessee Hi SMML, Seeing the Iron Shipwright announcement of a 1/350 1944 USS Tennessee (wow!) reminded me that I still have to finish my 1/350 1941 California, which I would really prefer to finish as her sister ship, the Tennessee. Does anyone know what the differences were between the California and the Tennessee in 1941? Thanks in advance, Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: Tsesarevich Hi Chuck You are urgendly looking for a model of the Imperial Russian TSESAREVICH? Do you know the 1/700 resin kits of Kombrig (a Russian resin company)? Kit No.70110 is TSESAREVICH. It came out recently. I got mine shortly before Christmas. So it still should be available.
