I can warmly recommend the Floating Drydock PlanBook of the Fletcher, which I used for my Fletcher (almost finished, almost). Also, Planbook Missouri is very good. Only need to build the ship now. I E-mailed Mr.Scott Moon to ask why they didn't interview her for his magazine article up to that point it was suspected that she was dead. A week ago I was checking out the girls on Beverly Hills 90102 and her name appeared as a guest star on a espsiode and her career bio was also available. It listed that old show as her first job. I hope this helps out Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Owen" Subject: Re: Signal Flags for Merchant Ships. I have missed SMML recently but note that there has been a lot of chat about signal flags and their use. For those of you who model Merchant Ships I would suggest that you obtain a copy of 'Brown's Signalling' from a specialist library. I have a copy of the 1933 edition which fully explains the International Code and how to use it. This includes rules for syntax and grammar plus all the code groups where groups of letters make up particular sentences. The book was originally published by Brown Son & Ferguson Ltd of Glasgow, Scotland. I hope that this is of help. All in all very good service and communication. I only wish that Canada Post would stop charging $5 and GST for mail order processing!!!! BTW, the plans were awesome! A BIG thank you to Bob Santos for generously offering to loan his naval signal flag book to Woody Vondercek. I got the manuals in less than three weeks! Good service, I recommend Floating dry-dock to anyone. Also, you MUST get a current catalogue. It's more of a book than a catalogue and it's worth every dime you pay. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. http://www.okclive.com/flagship/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject: Re: Floating Drydock Very reliable. Tom has been in business for a very long time - 20 years or more. Not only does he make available material that would be difficult to find otherwise, he does so at an extraordinarily reasonable price. His 8 X 10's of US warships during World War II are extremely useful, and at $ 3.50 a bargain by any standard - have you checked out the national archives lately? As a one man operation, delivery times can vary, but it's worth the wait, and again, it will be far less than dealing with official sources. Kurt Greiner SeaPhoto -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: Re: USS Arizona At the time of her loss in 1941, Arizona was in Measure 1 dark gray system, namely all horizontal metal and vertical surfaces in dark gray 5-D. The exception is that all approximately vertical surfaces above the level of the funnel tops were painted light gray 5-L. Wood decks were unpainted. Robert Lockie Cambridge UK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: US gun turrets There are cutaways (plan and RHS elevation) of the twin 5"/38 in Friedman's US Naval Weapons and also in the Anatomy of the Ship book on the Essex class carrier USS Intrepid. For the 16"/50, the former also has a 3D drawing of the gun itself and a dimensioned RHS elevation section of the turret and trunking. Alternatively, John Campbell's Naval Weapons of WW2 has the same material, plus a 3D cutaway through a 16"/50 turret and various useful drawings of the gunhouse interior, loading arrangement, projectile hoist and three plan views of various levels of the trunking. Unless you can get hold of blueprints, this would seem to be your best bet but I doubt it is still in print. Robert Lockie Cambridge UK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Paint Chips Well gang, thanks for the input. The responses are about evenly split between doing the IJN or RN colors next, after USN Set 2. We'll press on with the RN colors, and work on getting the IJN out while the RN paints are being matched/mixed. Having had a few days to reflect (while busily painting chips for USN 2--man, am I sick of greens and browns), I think we can do both without delaying the RN, since we have the IJN colors ready to paint right now. John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: USS ARIZONA I assume the question of ARIZONA's color pertains to 7 December 1941. If so, she and the rest of the battle line were in Measure 1, Dark Gray (5-D) overall on all vertical surfaces, with Light Gray (5-L) on the tops of the mainmast and foremast (above the level of the searchlight platforms). John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: tom Subject: 1/700 Skywave Atlanta This morning I opened for the first time a Skywave Atlanta class kit that has been in the closet for a while. As those of you familiar with the kit know, it has an unusual two piece hull and the lower piece, when fitted, sticks out quite a bit in a way that might simulate an armor belt or torpedo bulges. I looked at a few pictures I had of Atlanta class cruisers, though the pictures are "combat photos" and not perfectly clear the "knuckle" under the foredeck is visible but no sign of belt or bulge... am I just not seeing somthing? I have seen several photos published of this kit entered in competitions and the builders of those very nicely finished kits had clearly left the bulge on. So what gives? I suspect that I have some serious sanding to do here but before I did anything irreversible I would like some feedback. Best regards, Tom Kremer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: Mark Knowlton Subject: IJN Color Chips Please do the IJN set first, this area has long been neglected. It's a web site that was just bought out by Amazon.com that has information on just about every movie and TV show ever made. Sometimes it's a little sparse, sometimes it's got complete credits. With questions on all of these old TV shows lately I thought I might share this one with the list, anyway try it out if you want at: http:\\www.us.imdb.com or http:\\www.uk.imdb.com . Stuart Batchelor Norman, OK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "mike.leonard" Subject: Re: Spruance-class DD Back from a week of active duty, and there are a ton of SMML e-mails to wade through and get caught up on... While in Norfolk I purchased the Shanghai Dragon 1/700 kit of the USS Connolly. The box photo looks to be relatively recent - maybe early to mid 1990's, but the kit is a generic Spruance-class as built - circa 1980. I shot some of the Spruances that were inport to try to get a feel for some of the modernization details. Anybody care to give a 'quick and dirty' on what needs to be done to build a contemporary Spruance using this kit? A few obvious things from the box photo and what I saw on the USS Briscoe: replace ASROC with VLS, add CIWS above the bridge and atop the helo hanger, make the hanger higher and wider, and move the SLQ-32s to the after superstructure. I confirmed some of that using "Electronic Grayhounds". I also noted a RIB (Zodiac-type boat) on the Briscoe's starboard davit and a fat radome on the forward superstructure a few feet above the main deck. What's that thing designated? The Briscoe also had a Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launcher on her fantail. Is she a test platform or is the RAM being deployed to the fleet now? Briscoe was wearing black-and-white shaded hull numbers, whereas most combatants have adopted the "low visibility" style in recent years. Thanks for your comments. Their catalog shows well over a hundred different models, in scale. They also have a web site: http:\\www.expresspages.com/p/papermodels Since they show no amphibious ships, I have never purchased anything from them, so I know nothing about the company, Paper Models International. Thinking of recent posts, they do have a model of the cruiser ASKOLD, in 1:400 scale. How about doing some of these parts in 1/350! Now to the rest of the group: I broke down and am attempting a Spruance Class ship based on the 1/350 DML kit (my order for the GMM PE is on the way!) My question for the group is how do I go about laying out and painting the Helo landing target grid??? Free hand is not an option even with the raised lines! My hands are just not that steady.
