You can see this (if you look really closely) at the photograph on the cover of the Floating Drydock book on the Juneau by Rod Dickson. The Skywave belt parallels the waterline, if I remember correctly. I think he has done a commendable job of not only telling of the design and assembly of the kit, but also of maintaining his objectivity. The photos of the model in assembly are very well done. Rusty comments that part of his rationale for choosing this particular weapon was to offer kits of unusual subjects. This set me to wondering if there might be any market base for large-scale resin kits of other weapons familiar to the World War II modeler? Some which come to mind are a single/twin 20mm Oerlikon, a twin 40mm Bofors, and while I'm day dreaming, a 5"/38 cal. gun mount with a full interior. These weapons were common to many U.S. warships in WW II, and I'd be interested if other modelers on this list would like to see kits of these in, say, 1/35 scale, or am I just way out in left field, again? :-) Bob Steinbrunn Minneapolis (Where yesterday I cleared 14" of snow from the drive, and today the snowplow sealed me in again..sigh) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject: Re: $$$ for your construction articles >> Thanks to our much increased subscription base, we're now able to pay for your ship construction article. I would like to open up the hanger bays and show one SH-60 inside. Problem is I know nothing about what the inside of the hanger bay looks like. I will take a guess based on the hangers on other class ships, which we do know something about. Problem is that all these re single bay hangers. DDG-81 appears to have dual hangers. Can anyone make a guess as to whether or not the two bay would be connected inside (i.e. one large hanger with two separate doors), or would the two hangers not be connected (for perhaps, fire reasons). I know it's a guess, but I thought someone might know.... Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Caroline Carter" Subject: Re: Iron Duke Lee! Re HMS Iron Duke, she was an AA depot hulk during the last war. The 1/700 HMS Benbow and HMS Iron Duke kits are discontinued... the master patterns are still in the hands of our old casters. There isn't much to see on the Detroit river this time of year because of ice on the Great Lakes. However, there are always some nice ships to be seen passing on the river when the weather warms up. Also, if you check out the schedule at Bay City, there are always an interesting ship or two tied up on the Saginaw River. Indeed, I always thought it was a very interesting sight to see a Ocean steamer going past a Saginaw Valley corn field. There is the U.S.S. Silversides, a sub in Muskegon, Michigan. Also, there is the S.S. Valley Camp in Sault Saint Marie. Toledo has some interesting steamers on display (I think). I definitely know Toronto Canada has a tribal class destroyer. Toronto is one of the most beautiful cities in the world so it's worth the trip to see the city alone. Niagara Falls has a good ship display. The have the guided missile cruiser U.S.S. Little Rock on display and a good little Veterans memorial park. When the ship bores you then you can check out the Canadian side of the falls. Enjoy Grad School at U of M. Remember, sell those OSU vs. U of M tickets. They can be scalped for $100 each. Harry Dente, Research in Scale -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: tom Subject: Re: 1/700 Atlantas >> You're generally right in your observations. There was a belt of light armor on the ATLANTAs, but it is pretty hard to see in photos. I wrote a review of the Skywave ATLANTA kit when they first came out several years ago. The armor belt in the kit would do the YAMATO proud, scale-wise. It also extends too far aft--should end around the waist 5" mounts. Check a good plan source--Friedman's US Cruiser book, or better yet, the upcoming ATLANTA book from Glen Boren and WR Press--and be prepared to do some sanding to thin the belt down and shorten it up. << The armor belt is gone, 20 minutes work with a small razor-sharp wood chisel turned it into long spiral shavings. It was just like using a slick to trim planking, only heaps faster! I finally found a photo that shows the armor belt, in Hammel's "Guadalcanal, Decision at Sea" taken from maybe 40 feet away and the belt *barely* shows so I've decided that at 1/700 scale it should be invisible. I'll wait for Glen's book before I do much more with this kit, if I change my mind then I can put the belt back on using the thinnest possible Evergreen sheet. >> It can be made into an award-winning model--I took a first at the IPMS Nationals with mine--with not too much effort. << Hmmmnn... I'm not expecting THAT result but now that I've got your USN paint chip set at least I'll get the colors right! ;-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: Ram Missles Hi; In 1990 I toured the David R.Ray, DD-971, at Port Huaneme, California. She had a RAM mount aft and the tour guide said she was the trials ship. This system, of W.German origen, has been placed on quite a number of USN platforms. One bit of advice. I have wargamed modern naval since 1971 and know more than the average person about naval weapons, sensors, and equipment. I ended up answering many questions that our tour guide, a J.G., couldn`t answer. About halfway through our tour we got a new tour guide, and the very nervous J.G. stayed about 1/2" behind me for the rest of the tour. I guess I made them nervous. In future similar circumstances I have tried to tone down my knowledge. Although by the end of the tour of the Ray I wanted to take off my shoe and talk into it- "did you get all that, Boris"? Somewhere in my drawer I have 1/2 roll of film of the Ray. Anyone building her as 1990 let me know, I`ll give you prints. Chuck Duggie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: "Morley, James (London)" Subject: 40 mm mounts I need to add a few 1/350 40mm quads to a model. Looking at the tours of Alabama and Mamie on the Warship site, it seems that the shields vary somewhat. In some photos they wrap around the front and sides all the way to ground level (as per the Tamiya parts), in others they are on the front only, and begin about 2 feet above ground level, and in some, there are no shields at all. Is there a method to this? Is this just the result of not having enough materials for restoration? What needs to be done to the Tamiya mouldings to improve them (I've seen Paolo's comments about "brooms overhanging a balcony" - is the situation that bad??). I have the Flagship Models etch for this, which consists of the sights and railings. Interestingly, they do not specify any change in the Tamiya parts, yet their railing is much longer than the gap at the back (suggesting a wrap-around option?). Any ideas? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: roberto.paredes@cl.unisys.com Subject: Re: HMS Iron Duke Hi Lee, >> According to my sources, the HMS Iron Duke from WWI was not scrapped until after WWII.
