There are also photos and a plan and elevation drawing (prepared by myself) based on official plans. The kit is a very accurate rendering of a unit of the class, a few of which survived to serve in WW II. Friedman's book, one of a series based on extensive research in U.S. Navy files, was published by the U.S. Naval Institute Press and is still in print. You can order books directly from them via the internet. There is also a book published in the 1920s about the class by one of the builders, but it is rather difficult to find at this point. A.D. Let me start with thanking you all for your answers to my Z-33 question, especially to John Clements. The kit isn't finished, but I now know how to attack it (Unlike the Beaufighters of Coastal Command...:-). Onto the next project. I would really like to build a Norwegian Flower Class Corvette. Now the Flowers I'm sure have been covered a hundred times in this forum, so hopefully this approach to the subject is a bit different, making my post somewhat "acceptable". Now, which kit should I get (I won't even try getting the Matchbox kit)? I don't remember the names of the five Norwegian ones, but I understand they sailed under Norwegian Flag during the war. Are we talking heavy conversions here? I would prefer 1:350, but I'll settle with 1:700 if it's a better kit. I guess I'll have to step into the resin-league... No prob, I got a Dremel for X-mas... TIA Kyrre Harstad, Norway, getting lighter every day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "J. Lamontagne" Subject: Top Secret! Hi. I don't want to add to the conflagration over Secret subjects, but... during the Falklands war, the Brits took an ex-American submarine (I think it was the USS Stench) and fitted it out with an amazing new weapon that allowed them to immobolize part of the Argentine Navy. This was the Supercooled Nitrogen Applicator Probe (SNAP). It consisted of a side-mounted periscope which, when extended, allowed the sub to sneak up on an enemy vessel and squirt frozen water at the enemy's propellers, thus making it impossible for it to make any headway and sometimes freezing the enemy ship to the jetty. The sub which was fitted with the SNAP nearly fell into enemy hands when the weapon backfired, but they were able to sneak out of Buenos Aires as a small iceberg and lie low as part of the pack ice further South. The RN submarine was the Undubitable and she was painted bile green. I have a formula and paint chips for this colour. The SNAP can be easily manufactured in model form with a junked refrigerator. John Lamontagne -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "FERNANDO, YOHAN" Subject: Shinano Hello, I'm planning on building the IJN Shinano to depict her as she appeared underway on her ill-fated voyage. As she never carried any planes, I'm trying to see if there is anything that would have been on the flightdeck at the time as there were still workmen aboard. I was thinking along the lines of crated spare parts, supplies, trucks, tractors, or construction odds and ends. I've read the "Shinano" book by the skipper of the Archerfish a while back, and don't remember any references to anything cluttering the deck. Anyone have any insights? I am trying to make the model more interesting by avoiding a very big empty deck (unless it really was like that!). Thanks, Yohan Fernando -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: SANTA FE and ARIZONA SANTA FE wore Measure 21--Navy Blue (5-N) on all vertical surfaces, with Deck Blue (20-B) decks--from 1943-1945. The Deck Blue (20-B) used on ARIAONA's steel decks was the original Deck Blue, not the revised Deck Blue introduced in 1942. Those with our USN Paint Chip Set 1 can see the difference. I know only one: NKR Models (http://www.ballarat.net.au/nkrmodel/nkrhome.htm), but it has a few ships in its catalog. Regards, Roberto. Hi Roberto, Unfortunatly, I don't know of many online shops in Australia that have a good selection of ships. I, personally go thru WEM for most things(even if I shudder at the exchange rate) if they're not available at the local hobby shops. But try the ones below & see how you go. http://www.hyperscale.com/justplanes.htm - Jeff does stock some ships mainly resin. Tell him I sent you. http://www.buffnet.net/~tonym/models.htm - This is a massive model link site run by Tony & should be able to point you in the right direction. Tomlinson's message yesterday I had a look through by bookcases. This survey left me with the following questions. I have Ensigns 1 2 3 4 6 & 8 , what are the missing volumes content? Possible R-class BB's and Town class CL's! I have Man o' Wars 1 to 7 is this all that were produced? I would be very interested in buying the missing Ensign's 5 & 7, if anybody out there has any for sale please e-mail me. Who owns these titles and isn't it time they were republished? Malcolm N. The model, as Darius suggested, was from Digital Navy. To everything posted, I can only add one extra item. The book Z-Vor by Harald Fock apparently has plans of 108, should anyone be interested. Regards, Geoff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: CBNJBB62@aol.com Subject: Re: WW1 Subchaser Dear Craig: I have some information for you about the Glencoe Subchaser. The model depicts SC-96. If that's the one your doing. Here's something about it. Built at the Elco Boat Company costing $72,150. She was one of 450 subchasers built in W.W.I as an emergency measure to counter the U-boats. She was part of large force of subchasers after commissioning that was stationed in the Meditereeran Sea at a base called Corfu that was part of the Otranto Barrage to keep the Adriatic Sea closed up with the Austrian/Hungarian fleet inside. She never fought a U-boat during W.W.I or participated in the only sea battle of the USN had at the Durazzo Bombardment in 1918. Her great achievement was patrol. After WW I her moment in the sun came in 1922 when she was to evacuate Americans from Turkey from the battles between Greece and Turkey. In 1924 the navy stripped her of equipment and sold the sub chaser for public auction and was purchased by a man in Athens Greece. Here are some book titles that might help 1. Maverick Navy by Alex Moffat, Wesleyan University Press, 1976 ISBN-0-8195-5000-0 2. The Splinter fleet by Ray Millholland,Bobbs-Merrill Co. 1936 3. The Cinderellas of the fleet by William Nutting Standard Motor Construction Co. , 1920 4. US Small Combatants by Norman Friedman Naval Institute Press 1987 Admittedly the first 3 might be hard to locate but the 4th is pretty good. Bryant's book, AIRCRAFT CARRIER, that aboard the Yorktown the Intrepid was known as the "Decrepid" because she had been damaged so often. They were happy whenever she joined the formation because they were sure she would be the first to get hit if an attack came. It's amazing how callous men become during war. Mike Czibovic -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: cwjerden Subject: Med Blue Hey Folks, Could someone recomend a color for British "Mediterranean Blue". I am doing an Upholder in 1/400 scale. I would still like to know a drill size for a porthole in 1/700, 1/600, 1/400 and 1/350 scales. I have most any size drill, I just am not sure which one to use. Its a good thing that my AOL server is just a local call. I'm going to be busy! Tonight, I just picked up the Revell USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" kit. I couldn't help it. It was 40% off an already low price. Anyway, its the big version of the two kits that Revell makes of her. It's about 3 feet long. I have looked all over the box and at the many-pages long instructions, but I can't find any indication of the scale of the kit. Nose to tail, it is the same length as my Heller Victory @ 1:100, but the Revell detail seems bigger the Heller's. The crew figures almost seem like HO railroad scale. So, it must be bigger than 1:100. Have any of you figured out this one already? Roger Clemens RCClem@aol.com (For the time being. AOL is on probation) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: MTB/MGB/PT/Schnellboat kits Caroline; Can`t wait to see the kits. Thought I was going to have to super-detail some Skytrex 1:600 coastal craft. How about doing some 1:600 wargame craft now. Look at SDD and Skytrex list and do whatever they don`t do. By the time I get done they will be to nice to game with. I have the Russian and Japanese fleets for 1905 scratch built in 1:1200, in 1972, finally decided that they were too nice to game with. Will go back and add boats and more detail. Anyone here know where to get nice 1:1200 parts for scratch-built ships? Need boats, open mount guns, cranes and such. Anyone else here scratch build in 1:1200. My ships are mainly wood with brass and plastic parts, including vacuformed turrets. I built about 1/3 of this club project. Joe Struck and others built the rest. Ever seen anyone scratch build in 1:2400? I have a 1:2400 greek Salamis BB that Joe built, looks like a professional job.
