WEM has done an excellent job in providing PE sets in this scale for Airfix kits and recently Dave and Caroline have released an excellent anti-aircraft weapon set (designed by Peter Hall) my favorite scale. It contains the components to build 3 Vickers quad 0.5in guns, 2 quad 2-pounder pom-poms and 2 eight barreled 2-pounder pom-poms. For a review check out my site International Maritime Modeling http://members.tripod.com/~Febus65/imm.htm Also, WEM is planning to release PE sets for the Airfix Warspite, Belfast and Hood, which will contain PE versions of these guns. While these guns are not the easiest to build, the quality is excellent. Resin castings of these guns will probably be an easier to use alternative to the PE versions. I for one would love to see 1/600 resin aircraft to replace the ones in the kits and to add a few more to the Ark Royal's flight deck. Let's see, how can I put this.................... YES!! YES, YES, YES, YES, YES.......Oh, PLEASE, WEM, PUH-LEESE say you'll issue 1/600 scale resin parts!!!!! We underpriveleged 1/600 scale junkies have only been able to stare jealously at the wealth of after-market goodies that the 1/700 community have enjoyed - dare we hope that WEM might take up the cause of this abused, misunderstood, and sullied minority that is the 1/600 scale community? (think I need the theme from "Brian's Song" playing in the background) We of fading eyesight can never hope to deal with the tiny details that make up the 1/700 kits -- 1/600 for me personally represents the smallest scale I can work with without losing what eyesight (not to mention sanity) I have left -- yes, even with lighted magnification lenses. I fully appreciate the virtual artistic beauty in a 1/700 kit and/or diorama, and I'd love the opportunity to attempt at a duplicate level of achievement in 1/600 scale. There are a lot of kits out there (including a LOT of aircraft carrier kits, so how about a 1/600 AIRSTRIKE line WEM....nudge, nudge, wink wink?) Seriously, Caroline & other wonderful WEM-folk, please give this consideration, and know you'll have at least one eager customer here in the states, two with Art. What say ye, Felix, you and the other 1/600 folk joining in this -- your voices would really help here! A very impressive site, and they are doing a great preservation job. It was worth wading through river flood water to get to the visitor's center and on to the ship. It is worth an out of the way trip to Wilmington to see the ship. It is also worth a trip to Patriot's Point outside of Charleston to see the Carrier Yorktown and the other vessels moored with her. It is a very fitting tribute to WWII naval heroes. Late 1941 original Deck Blue (20-B) steel decks, and natural teak. All these colors are in our USN Paint Chip Set 1. The early Dark Gray and Light Gray are quite quite different from their late war counterparts (included in our USN Set 2), while the original Deck Blue is somewhat different from the 1942 Revised Deck Blue (which is also in USN Set 1). Incidentally, if anyone wants visual evidence of relying entire on historic photos--even color photos--in interpreting paint colors, just go to the NavSource website and take a look at the color photo of USS DRAYTON (DD-344). The best source I know of for this type of information is the Naval Institute publication "proceedings." This monthly magazine is full of information on contemporary naval goings on: U.S. and foreign. Sometimes there are good photos, sometimes historical articles. It is a staple of professional naval-types. To receive the publication one must become a member of the institute. This requires a nominal yearly fee. There are other benefits as well as the fine mag. I'm sure they have a net site. What is the general consenus about how that fares against R.A Burts British Battleships 1939-45. << I, on the other hand, have Alec Raven and John Robert's "British Battleships of WWII", but not Burt. It's a modeler's/researcher's dream. It has details on all the British battleships from the Queen Elizabeths to Vanguard, including the ones that were never built, like the Lions and G3s. It has details on original design, all refits, weapons embarked at different times, detailed overalled drawings, detail drawings, pictures, paintings of the never-were ships, you name it. It gives good insight into the intent of the designers which is always very interesting to me. I find the differences between the battleship builder's reach and grasp, for each country, quite fascinating. My only regret is that I didn't snap up their "British Cruisers" companion before it disappeared. I'd spend a lot to find one. ('Course, battleships were a waste of money by WWII, but still...) Second is Breyer. For details of her loss, see Middlebrook's "Battleship". As best I can tell the kit is as-of-sinking. It's clearly post-1936 with the catapult cross-deck; the AA weapons fit matches too. I could check the forementioned rather than pull it out of my memory, but that's what I recall from when I built her (I have that kit too, and I like it). The camo (dark blue-grey panels over light grey) depicted on the box is apparently again her color when sunk. It's almost certain to be of similar quality and reliability but with not so much analysis. R A Burt also produced British Battleships 1889-1904, British Battleships of World War One and British Battleships between the Wars (of which I have the first two). They are of very high quality and also fall under the definition of definitive. Where can I find out some good writings on the Navy in general? << Virtually all of my ship modelling is in submarines, so I can tell you from first hand experience that obtaining information on modern SSNs and SSBNs can be difficult. The Navy has recently relaxed some of the secrecy, which is why I was able to tour a late model LA (SSN 789 USS Toledo) and an SSBN (SSBN 742 USS Wyoming). Even then, tours of the engineering space are still off limits. I recently tried to obtain the drawings for the old Polaris sub Abraham Lincoln, a 598 (first in service; using modified Skipjack SSN hull)) class of SSBN. These drawings are in National Archives II in Maryland, BUT still classified!! The Abe herself was converted to razor blades over a dozen years ago. The Navy is still concerned about revealing details about the engineering spaces of even obsolete nuclear ships. If you desire information specifically on submarines, I can really recommend Norman Friedman's two books, "US Submarines through 1945" and "US Submarines since 1945". These have outstanding line drawings of submarines by Jim Christley, a former submariner and superb artist. However, you will find nothing about the Virginia class boats in these books. Friedman also has several books about surface
