I once got a galley proof of one of my reviews from a UK publisher that was riddled with errors, and have noticed that works coming from the UK are far more prone to "editorial oversights" than those published in the US. A fellow academic suggested that these problem stem from the fact that British proof-readers are very well protected by their unions, and love to head over to the "pub" for a pint or two on their lunch hour! I don't have any proof, but it seems that the evidence speaks for itself! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: DaveRiley1@aol.com Subject: Re: Destroyer Collision I believe the destroyer in question was the USS RADFORD. But, early last month before 2/12, the USS Radford collided with a Saudi (?) tanker near Hampton Roads. Virginia Pilot Online (not sure of URL) had video of both ships as they pulled into Norfolk. I think the paper or USN sources were blaming the tanker. So, while I'm still motivated in this potential project... I'm looking for the old Entex kit of the Lusitania to convert. Anybody got one laying around they're willing to part with? << I got this note from an outfit called Down Memory Lane in Los Angeles. I ordered some print reproductions from them and was pleased with their service. I don't know what scale the Entex Lusitania kit was; the Airfix Mauretania is 1/600. White Ensign Models (http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models ; email: xdt22@dial.pipex.com) offers-- or offered-- Gunze Sangyo's 1/350 Lusitania. Les, Noticed your message to the Queen Mary discussion group concerning the re-issue of the Airfix Mauretania kit. If interested, we still have several of the original [1/600] Airfix Mauretania kits available as item 185 at $35.00 plus $4.00 s/h. (Sorry, we have no QE) These and others are depicted/ described at http://www,shipsahoy.com/modls896.htm Cordially, Ye Olde Salt at Down Memory Lane Les Hi gang, IIRC, the 1/350 RMS Lusitania kit started off as Entex, then Gunze brought/hired the moulds. Now I wouldn't be surprised to see Minicraft release a version(If they haven't already) Shane - who picked up his Airfix 1/600 Mauretania & Free Enterprise II for AUD $10.00 last year & may actually build them this year ;->>. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Mauretania Hey Jeff: Since that's one of my long-term projects, any chance of seeing copies of those photos? Radar was 1 x Type 279 air warning Possibly more during her January-March 1942 refit Edinburghs camouflage (which was only carried for a short period until she was sunk) was an Admiralty First Disruption Scheme. There is apparently a poor photo in existence which shows this but unfortunately I do not have a copy. Prior to this Edinburgh was painted in overall medium gray. In particular, I'm trying to find an article by J. Itani and H. Lengerer which appeared in Warship 1990. Does anyone have a copy of that article? << Tim: I have the article right here. I can send you photocopies. Just give me your address. It gives the origins of Akashi and her service history. BTW, Skywave's kit is the best you can find plus they will be releasing a version with photoetched cranes (good thing too, because those cranes can't be replicated by any other way.) Yunchi Hsaio -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Douglas Martin" Subject: BB Fuso book, Royal Navy. Folks: 1) My Anatomy book arrived today, I see the faults about scales and dates of diagrams - the fore views on pages 90/91 being classic. BTW, my copy was 'printed and bound' in China, and virtually all the 'Osprey Campaign/Aces' etc are in Hong Kong. Its not too much to ask why this cant be done in the good ol' UK is it...........? Fascinating pics of Fuso, including the small one of the ships at Brunei, 20-22/10/44. I have another fuzzy pic of the 'Centre Force' making its way out of Brunei in single column towards their destiny, very poignant. 2) For anyone interested in the Modern Royal Navy, goto: http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/today/index.htm The various 'shore stations', such as HMS Collingwood, Nelson, Ganges etc are now only: HMS Sultan HMS Dryad HMS Collingwood HMS Temeraire HMS Excellent HMS Cambridge Britannia Royal Naval College HMS Raleigh 3) I shall have a peek for the addresses of the Science Museum etc etc and fire them onto the list (I've been to most of them, trekking round London......) Am I right in assuming that her radar and AA fit were similar to Belfast's in the same time period? << According to the illustrious Raven and Roberts, Edinburgh's war modifications were as follows: March 1940 to October 1940: REFIT Radar Type 279 fitted July 1941: 6 x Single 20mm fitted 2 on B turret, 2 on the quarterdeck, and one either side of the bridge on B gundeck, just after the turret, hard against the superstructure Jan to March 1942 REFIT Radar Types 284, 285, and 273 fitted 2 decent photographs of her in late 1941 appear in Ensign 5 Town Class Cruisers, one of these also being in British Cruisers of WW2. >> Also, what camo measure was Edinburgh wearing at the time? (If these questions can be answered, I'll order another Edinburgh from Caroline-I promise. << By the time of her sinking, she was wearing a disruptive pattern scheme which Alan Raven describes as the Admiralty First Disruptive Scheme which was the type of pattern using small blocks of colour, later discarded in favour of the Intermediate pattern with larger swathes. Unfortunately, as far as I know, the only photograph that exists of her in camouflage is one rather poor quality view of her following the incident with the torpedo. It is almost impossible to discern the pattern except for a couple of smudges which show that indeed she was camouflaged. If anyone out there has possession of one of grandad's photos showing her in this scheme, please let us know! Some details of this type of camouflage scheme appear in Alan Raven's article on RN camouflage in PSM 97/1, and who knows what his forthcoming book will reveal... >> Now can WEM and MDC cast 1/700 scale gold bars?. << Hmmm... maybe we could do these in etched brass... I think Peter Halls needs more challenging work anyway...relief etched hallmarks perhaps? BTW a note to Douglas Martin ... we've been shipping the Anatomy of the Ship Fuso book for several weeks, so are a bit mystified by your references re. delivery "in the next couple of weeks". Also, re the Profile Morskie IJN Tone being in Polish, we made an enquiry with the Polish publishers BS Press re. producing English language versions of these titles... a payment for 1,000 copies upfront was requested, and the retail price would end up being about 70% higher... as the pictures and drawings are in English, which, after all, are excellent, and the most important part of the book, we decided a definite no-no on that idea! However, I did query as to why the Poles don't simply produce an English language book in the first place as a rather large percentage of the "wealthy" Western world are English speakers rather than Polish language speakers...the answer came across as being more a case of national pride in the language than any marketing considerations. Fair comment, perhaps we should swallow OUR national pride and learn Polish! I've got Tamiya's 1/350 kit which doesn't include any LSO details. At least the catwalk is shaped properly so I can scratch-build the platform... The trouble I'm having is in making the escape chute. Another question: Does the chute extend all the way down to that small deck that protrudes from the hull below the platform? Any help would be appreciated.
