I checked out the preview in Warship, and it appeared to be on about the same level as the IJN Kirshima by Classic Warships, which seemed a bit heavy in some of the details. << I saw a test shot of the Rodney last year at the nationals and it was one impressive looking model. I really like the look of this ship anyway. With that massive superstructure on the stern and all that firepower up front, it's one cool looking ship. I'm operating from memory here, but as I recall it looked a bit heavy on the smaller details (gun tubs, boats, etc.). However, since this was a test shot they have had almost a year to fix any problems (if any). If it's anything like the Hood kit I saw on Warship it should really be something. I hope to see a build/review soon on this one. At that price I'm afraid it's just out of my price range (with two kids in college). One disk was dedicated to Navy sound effects. I think it included large guns firing. It also had a number of PA announcements, cat shots and the like. The Army disk also had large guns, 105 & 155 mm I think, firing. The AF disk had jet flybys and bomb explosions, supposedly even an atomic bomb. Unfortunately I haven't had a record player in 10 plus years and the records were all disposed of in my move last August, sorry. The contest had quite a few entries and the quality was excellent. There was not as many ships as I would like to have seen but the few entries there were well done. A most impressive Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise was displayed underway (cut down to waterline) with a full deck of aircraft. This was a large diorama !!! One of the highlights was meeting Jon Warneke, he had a beautiful example of the new '1944' fit "USS Tennessee". This is a must have kit. I'm already saving my pennies. Another pleasant surprise was seeing the Brooklyn class cruiser, USS Nashville. Great work Jon, you guys have sold several kits already. The finesse of the gun shields and other details was outstanding. The casting appeared to be flawless, with kits like these available, I never will pay off my VISA. Steve Rogers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Doremus, Mark" Subject: Amphibious Ships Folks, If you are going to build molds for Amphibs, can I put in my bid for modern ones too? Austin Class LPD's, or the newer Wasp class LHD's are generally unrepresented in plastic or resin. Meanwhile the Tarawa class LHA's and Iwo Jima class LPH's (many were ex-CVE's) seem well represented in plastic or resin. I will admit to bias, my son serves on the USS Nashville, an Austin class LPD built by Lockheed. But still these are large ships, 500-800 feet long, sure to be impressive in either 1/350 or 1/700. Mark -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Kenneth H. Goldman" Subject: Re: CAN ANYONE HEAR NAVAL GUN FIRE? Volume 2, side 2, track 1 of "Victory At Sea" opens with a volley of sixteen inch naval rifles. It is most effective. In fact, it won the day in a battle with a retired neighbor across the street who inisted on playing his Fanny Brice records loud enough that I could hear them with my windows closed and the vacuum cleaner on. After setting up a stack of 15" speakers aimed in his direction outside, a couple of broadsides settled the issue. There's also some antiairctraft, fire, shouted orders, claxons, and crashing aircraft on volume 3, side 1, track 1. I visited a Pearl Harbor destroyer just as they got back from the Gulf War. The gunner's mate looked at me, with all seriousness, and stated that the oil derricks were jumping around and avoiding the shells.... If anyone does know of one please let me know the title and catalogue #. << If you can find the soundtrack from The Victory at Sea series, it has a sustained naval bombardment track. The musical score, IIRC, was by Rodgers and Hammerstein. I don't know the catalog number, but a search on the various on-line music stores like Music Choice or Music Boulevard should turn it up if it is still available. We used to get into much trouble in college by sitting the stereo speakers in the dorm window and playing this at max volume, especially late at night. Mike Settle The score was by Richard Rogers only. In particular I was wondering about nylon and fishing line (since I have them handy), but I've also seen rigging sold at model stores, what is it?. What are the differences between them and sprue, that is, I am getting sick of stretching the stuff and not always getting consistant results, especially with thickness and mostly because my current projects sprue will not tighten! It is so frustrating that I've removed it all and I want to start over. Also, can nylon or fishing line be tightend with heat? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Don't feel so comfortable with the fact that for now Congress has backed off charging (taxing) for Internet hookups. This is a HUGE potential source of revenue for the US government. I guarantee you all that Congress will figure out some way to get their hands into out pockets via the Internet.
