Their Gearing and Sumner were almost perfect as far as design goes. With a little extra detailing they both build into really nice models. I have the FRAM Gearing kit built up and looks wonderful. << Rusty, I bought the Shirley FRAM Sumner as it is the only kit of this type of ship I could find. I wanted to build it up as it was in 1968 when I served on DD-709. Generally the kit looks very accurate. Two isues - The ECM shack above the hanger deck is the smll version. Most of these ships had an enlarged shack to include active ECM gear. This happened in the mid-60's. Also the main mast looks rather strange. Doesn't seem to be scaled correctly. This is my first resin kit so I am proceeding slowly. Steve Singlar -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Bill & Kaja Michaels" Subject: New (old) Lindberg Kits out FYI: Lindberg has re-released their 1/32 scale PT 109 kit. List price seems to be about $100 US, various internet sources have it in the $70 range. Lindberg has also released their 1/32 LCVP again. It is the same kit as the early 90's version, but this time without the motor. It is in a special "D-Day Limited Edition" box. I saw this kit on the shelves of my local hobby shop. I have in my possession an article written by one Mark L. Shannon (who may be on the list) about American Aircraft Carrier Deck Camouflage in WW II. An overall excellent article, Mr. Shannon says one thing which I would like see if anyone else agrees with. He shows a series of drawings of the Big E's flight deck which shows patterns of stripes throughout her career, which looks great to me. But he also states that she retained chrome yellow for the color of these lines throughout the war. << Michael, I checked all my Enterprise references and could not find anything about the deck markings. I suggest you try the Naval Air Museum at Pensecols (sp) or http://www.cv6.org. They may be able to help. I will also send your message off to a couple of Enterprise vets I know to try to get the info. I'm not quite sure what the external differences would be from a CV to a CVS. From what I can see, the only visible changes from the outside are the removal of the catapult retractors from the bow. Does anyone know of any more visible external changes I should know? Any help would be much appreciated. They had also adopted the US flag on the fuselage sides, starboard side upper, and port side lower wing surfaces. The US ARMY on the undersides was removed. None of these a/c carried the yellow surround." << However, in a copy of "The P-40 Kittyhawk" Famous Aircraft Series printed by ARCO Publishing Co., It has 2 photos of P-40F's taking off from the USS Ranger of the 33rd Fighter Group which clearly shows the American Flag just below and behind the canopy and also shows the Star with the Yellow surround.... the overall paint scheme is two tone (olive drab and tan) on the upper surfaces with what appears to be yellow(?) aircraft codes on the tail and a yellow(?) stripe just behind the spinner on the cowl.... Under side markings were not visable, but the US Flag did not appear on the upper starbord wing.... at least not on the aircraft in these photos..... the spinner was a darker color but I can't determine which..... The photos were in black and white so I can't really verfiy the actual colors.... I also found it interesting that one of the photos shows one P-40 spotted at the very front right corner of the flight deck while another is taking off on the left side.... Hope this helps.... cn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Evert-Jan Subject: Re: attaching pe parts to resin kit The problem with both resin and PE is that you cannot glue them with glues that dissolve the material for a strong bond, so you need superglues (cyanoacrylates, or something sounding like that) or white glue, used for glueing wood. The CA results in a very quick bond, but is often very brittle, making PE railing snap off at the touch. Also, the CA leaves almost no room at all for positioning the part. White glue is particularly usefull for this. The bond is quite strong afterwards. A benefit from white glue is that you can remove excess glue with a brush and some water. However, the glue sets slow. This might be a problem with attaching railing, which will simply fall of your model before the glue has set, so a few drops of CA here and there can fix them to your model. Still, attaching railing can be troublesome, as the area between the railing and the kit is very small, and a drop of glue can easily foul up the delicate part. I usually paint the railing and the subassembly (Preferably a single deck) before glueing the railing. The PE railing is already bent into shape. Even if the curve of the railing is very small, bend it into shape, by rolling a cylindrical object over it. If you try to bend the railing into shape on the model, the resulting stress will tend to bend the railing back at the top, and the part will "flare" out. Also, a pre-bend PE part will not have as much trouble with the initial stages of glueing as the unbend part. If you need to make a few sharp angles in the PE part, be sure to test it on the subassembly, or a flat surface (glass plate works very well for me) and check if the railing touches the base. There are always some inaccuracies when you try to make a 90 degree angle, so it might be better to cut up a piece of railing with many angles in it. If you don't there might be some gaps between the railing and the subassembly, which can only be corrected with some extra glue or paint to a certain extent. During the assembly, I always chip some flakes of paint of the parts, and I correct that later. Else, you would be glueing the layer of paint of the PE part, and not the part itself. I found this out by trial and error. For glueing, start with glueing the railing at a few point only, fixing in into position. Then, add glue along the entire part. The usual technique is to "paint" a drop of CA (or white glue) with a steel wire or some stretched sprue, spreading it along the base of the PE part. After the glue has set, paint the part if necessary, and spray it with some varnish. A coat of matt varnish will cover up all that shiny CA. Plan the assembly of railing in advance, making sure that you do not need to work on a part with PE attached to it. Also, attach the railing on the hull last, as you will always damage it, no matter how much care you take (At least, that is what happens to me) To summarize, PE parts are extremely delicate, and can be damaged by merely looking at it. Once you get a dent in a piece of railing, it's almost impossible to get it out. One more thing: to remove excess brass off the PE part after you've cut them from the sprue, take a pair of flat nosed pliers. Have the rough end sticking barely out the the pliers, and sand it off with a fine steel file. Mostly, the rough end cannot be seen before painting, as the light is always bouncing of the PE part, but it is always there. For example the bulkheads up to waist level being painted blue on the hangar deck- it is only blue in hangar bay 2 forward of elevator 4 on the port side. The rest is dark grey, and always has been. I was in my office on the third deck when I first read that in the book (when it first came out), and had to run up to the hangar bay to check. Mr. Kinzey was on the ship during the summer of 1990 (as was I) working on the book, and it is the best reference for that time avalible, but in just the time I was on board significant external changes were made in 1986, 1989, and during the re-fueling in 1991-94. Anyway, the hangar does not start at the fantail bulkead, the Jet Engine Test Shop runs about 50 feet forward of the fantail bulkhead. The forward bulkhead of the shop has a series of roll up doors into the hanar bay proper. The useable portion of the hangar forward ends at the the forward end of elevator one, but an open area only one deck high extends forward another 50 feet or so. As to the sides, the hangar side walls are about 12-15 feet inside the outer hull. This contains shops, ladder wells, etc. I hope that answered your question, I could go on forever about the inaccuracies in the Tamiya kit if you want. Ned Wilson U.S.S. Thanks, Rich -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Rick Heinbaugh Subject: Re: CVN-65 hangar dimensions Jens H. Brandal write: >> With reference to my other post regarding the Enterprise hangar deck, there is one thing that now puzzles me. The Detail and Scale book claims the hangar to be 732 feet long, 96 feet wide and 25 feet tall. Comparing the scaled dimensions to the kit, the height is OK (23 on the kit vs. 22 mm scale), but the lengths and widths are way off the mark. Measuring from the rear of the fan tail bulkhead, the edge of the forward elevator is 585 mms - that means the hangar is supposed to stretch for another 53 mms forward of that, but it doesn't look that far in the photos of the D&S book. << On the carriers I've been stationed on (INDEPENDENCE & NIMITZ), the hangar deck stretched forward of the usable airplane parking space into an area suitable only as a parking lot (maintenance area) for ground support equipment, including ordnance handling gear. I think the forward 20' or so was only a yard or two wide. It went forward on the stbd side, and there were workshops across the front of the port side of the hangar deck. Maybe that contributes to the anomaly in your measurements and photos.
