The series has about 15 volumes, each on average about 130 to 190 pages in a 6 x 8 inch format. Each volume covers in photographs, line drawings and of course Japanese language history, between two and four specific ships. At between $12 and $16 dollars each (before shipping costs) I really think these are a bargain (at least for my library where I don't generally have nearly enough on Japanese capital ships). I can't say if these are just a reprinting of older publications, or are using already generally available photographs. All I know is that good and plentiful photographs of Japanese warships are pretty rare, so these books are a real find to me, and I wanted to share these with my fellow SMML'ers. Of course now I'll have to spend more time superdetailing my kits. Oh well... I hope Bill at Pacific Front Hobbies carries these soon for easier US distribution. Good Reading Steve Jantscher -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ron Hillsden, Victoria BC Canada" Subject: Smellies? >> I really enjoy the content of our world of smellies. Many thanks. << Smellies? 8<) I am glad you are a better draughtsman than a typist! Many thanks to you for the years of enjoyment from having good reference drawings, John! Maybe you were thinking of the submariners list? Where do they keep the cattle on those boats, anyway? Ron Hillsden Victoria BC Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: US Naval AC markings Hello Smellies! Browse on over to the US Naval Historical Center at: http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq2-1.htm for a history of the US Navy's aircraft markings. While you're in the neighborhood, go up to the main index page and bookmark it. Then plan on coming back often to browse through the site. Its full of pictures, art, documents, and other information on the history of the US Navy. Ed Mansfield, TX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "FERNANDO, YOHAN" Subject: HMS Warspite Hello Everybody, Does anyone know the origin of the name 'Warspite'? The QE class seems to have no consistant naming scheme... Queen Elizabeth = named after a person Barham = ditto Malaya = named after Republic of Malaysia (who funded its construction) Valiant = descriptive name (like 'Inflexible', 'Invincible' etc.) Warspite = ??? It's a great name for a great ship, but I just can't figure out what it refers to. Is it someone's name? Thanks in advance. Yohan Fernando -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: The Battle of the Coral Sea Todays date in naval histroy: May 4th is the anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea - the first naval battle between aircraft carriers. Ed -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: LUCASNER@aol.com Subject: Re: 1942 USN Insignia No, the red circles and rudder stripes were not removed until middle to late May '42. By Midway, they had almost completely disappeared. Note on that damage to the Mikuma: I have a reference that all that damage you see to the 'Y' 8-inch turret is actually the remains of a SB2U Vindicator dive bomber that was hit and '(supposedly) intentionally crashed into her!! (Kamikaze American Style?) Anyone out there support this? As regards to the Doolittle B-25's: WINGS of FAME (an absolutely OUTSTANDING periodical) has a very clear photo of B-25's spotted on a carrier's deck (when did this happen other than Doolittle's raid) that shows one of the aircraft tail # 02282 with the red disc in the star markings but no rudder stripes. These seem standard markings for that period as I've found several photos of Mitchells during that time and all had the red disc and no rudder stripes. Your friendly 'uneducated' Air Force Geek, Dave Lueck -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Thank you for the support. SoonerCon '99 still on! I want to thank all the SMMLies who sent me emails with their support. I had a TON of email this morning! It's very gratifying to know so many of you care. I still haven't heard from two of my modeling buddies in the path of the storms. I hope they are all right. Donations are flooding in from all over the country here. KTOK radio has people calling in by the hundreds volunteering their homes to house the victims. Civil defense has actually made the announcement today that they have EVERYTHING they need and then some due to the generosity of Oklahomans and others! I just heard the tornado was upgraded to an F 5 (that's 300 plus MPH winds folks). There are roads that have the concrete surfaces torn away! Most of the fatalities occurred because the tornado crossed I-44 at rush hour. Hundreds of cars strewn about and some tossed over a half mile! Keep the prayers coming and thank everyone who already has sent their concerns. The Edmond area was not damaged so SoonerCon '99 will go on as planned. Pass the word. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. The post about only 6 minesweepers being lost reminded me of the story of the 2 mess cooks peeling potatoes on the stern of the recovery ship that was recovering a nuke that had gone in the drink. The "boys" decided that this was a very dangerous job so they moved to the foredeck to be away in case there was a problem. Sam Pullig, who never had to mess cook. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "F J Hueso" Subject: More on Russian and Japanese Colours in 1904-1905 Reading H.W. Wilson's "Battleships in Action", Vol .I (Conway reprint) he stated (p.206) that the Russian ships exiting from Port Arthur (10-8-1904) were painted "a dark blackish-brown colour wich distinguished them from the grey Japanese" Also, in Tsushima he reported (p.243) that " the hulls and upper works were black while the funnles were a bright salmon yellow and stood out plainly against the mist wereas the Japanese ships with their uniform tint of grey were exceedingly hard to distinguish". Regards from wild-weather Madrid Javier -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject: Re: SMML across America Hello Everyone, More Norfolk travelog: Went to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard museum today - a small but nice musuem there. Highlights were a 1/8" model of the Forrestal, and a 1/4" scale model of the Norfolk (DL-1) with a whole bunch of Weapon Alfa's on it. Most interesting. Also, two models built in Japanese shipyards of World War II IJN ships - one is the Mogami, and the other a DD - the Mogami in particular is very nice. Across the river I saw Nauticus for the first time. The upper floor is orientated to the young adult, but the Aegis theater is a worthwhile experience - puts you in the middle of a (very busy) CIC. The second floor has the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, which used to be on the Norfolk Navy Base. This museum presents the story of the US Navy in a succinct but informative way, and has some neat artifacts - the wheel from the West Virginia, and well crafted models, including a fine Ironclad by one of our list members, PC Coker - nice job! Be sure to check out the Predreadnaught model on the ground floor - I think it was the Illinois, one of the old BB's with the two story turrets at any rate. The museum is in a very nice setting, right on the river - AND THE SUN WAS SHINNING!! Hooray! First time in a week... Anything that saves effort and inhances appearance or accuracy is worth a shot in my book. Having done some quick research on this pricey item, it appears several diameters are available. Which diameter do you use? Many Thanks, Dan Kaplan, NYC (where tornadoes are an absolute rarity, thank God. To Rusty, if it was 1/10 as bad as it seems on the news, then our hearts are out to all of you.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: DILIANE@aol.com Subject: Re: SMML across America Just a suggestion for the SMML across America. As long as you are in Norfolk, try to get into Fort Monroe. The Virginia and Monitor had their big battle in front of the fort. There are some very nice scale models inside. And the last time I was there the naval base was open without a pass. That may have changed in the last two years, but hopefully not. Yorktown has a replica of a wooden ship gun deck. Good luck. Along with many other refinements applied at this time, which are not in the article either, the turrets and barrels now appear as follows: http://whiteensignmodels.simplenet.com/wemhood/turret.jpg Thanks!
