Well, I can believe the part about the Belfast being moved on June 4, but I can't believe the fact that I will arriving in London for vacation on the 5th! Well, I guess I won't be seeing the Belfast next week... Luckily I saw her last year when I was in London for business, but the 1 hour visit didn't do justice to all there was to see and I was really looking forward for a second, more complete visit this time around. Yikes, just my luck! At least the Imperial War Museam can't be towed down the Thames... Can anyone make me feel a little better by telling me of any good hobby shops in London proper? Thanks. Yohan Fernando :( -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Baker Subject: BLIND MAN'S BARF The problem with the statement about the "once secret" information alleged to be revealed in BLIND MAN'S BLUFF is that those submariners who allegedly gave it to the authors were violating security oaths and placing their fellow submariners in jeopardy as well. There's no such thing as "once secret" until the information is released by the proper authorities after review, and retirement from the Navy (or any other service) does not release anyone, ever, from their sworn obligations not to disgorge classified material. I've not read the book, but I had to deal with one of the two authors some years ago when he and his partner were trying to wheedle information out of retired flag officers whose, shall we say, grasp on reality was slipping in their dotage. From what I've read in reviews, however (see the highly respected Norman Friedman's disection of the book in the USNI PROCEEDINGS a few months ago), whatever the Russians said was taken as gospel, and whatever was official from the USN was taken as disinformation. The Russians lost the Cold War and have extreme difficulty in grasping that it was their fault, not ours. SECRET means SECRET. Best/Dave Baker -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "FERNANDO, YOHAN" Subject: Re: BSW molds I'm quite sorry to hear that BSW is closing shop. I had just finished my back log of kits and was ready to work on my US destroyer flotilla (adding something besides Fletchers, Sumners and Gearings). This could prove difficult now. Someone had mentioned the idea of buying the molds to the Bureau of Small Warships kits. I think this is a great idea as it would be a shame to see these molds and kits disappear as most US DD classes are under-represented in 1/700 (or any scale for that matter). Could any of the resin kit companies (White Ensign, Classic Warships, etc) seriously think about contacting the owner of these molds and look into acquiring them? I have absolutely no idea as to how much of an investment this would be, or how many kits would need to be sold for it to be profitable, or even if the owner of the molds would be willing to part with them, so this might really be a silly request. But I for one, would be ready to buy these kits if they were re-issued by anyone, and I'm sure there must others who would be willing to do the same. I would like to see what other people (both modellers and manufacturers) think about this idea. BTW- someone mentioned Classic Warships is no longer makes their destroyer kits. Is this true? Anyone know any reasons for this? Yohan Fernando -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: jakloek@kodak.com Subject: IJN Linoleum The Anatomy-Takao book states that the interior linoleum was removed to lessen the fire danger, but the exterior linoleum was kept until the end of the war. Whether that was the case for other ships is not clear, but I recall an SMML posting the last time this issue came up indicating that it was also true for at least one other cruiser. I do not remember the specific ship. James Kloek -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: POW Hood Diorama suggestion I think the problem here is the word diorama. Don't worry about an accurate distance. In real life the distance between naval vessels is far too extreme to show accurately for modelers due to the size of the finished diorama. I wonder how big the Pearl Harbor diorama will be once built to scale! I would place the ships about 150 scale feet apart, underway on a straight heading. Ships traveled closer than that to transfer personnel, mail, food, movies etc. If you wish to enter the model in a contest, you can enter can enter them as a single entry (each model judged separately) or separate entries. If you wish to enter them as a diorama, (everything will be judged) rig up a mail or personnel transfer. Since they would be on a straight heading it would accurately depict what's happening. I'm sure others will disagree, but that's the call I would make. I built the Heller Potemkin kit about 8 years back and I had the same problem. A friend of mine had a photo of the Aurora(?) I believe that's a museum in Russia. It was painted overall light gray. However, due to the lack of reference material I painted mine to match the model in an OLD FSM that Dennis Moore built (assuming he had accurate info). The hull, capital guns, fittings were all flat black. The deck was a natural teakwood. The life boats and launches were medium gray. The stacks were a yellow orange with black caps. The masts were the same color as the stacks up to the bottom of the crows nests and black above the crows nests. Like I said I'm not certain this color scheme is accurate, but I trust Dennis would know. Either way this paint scheme makes a striking looking model. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. http://www.okclive.com/flagship/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "foeth" Subject: POW & Hood I'd say you just cheat a bit on the distances and get the diorama roughly in proportion, by putting them one scale ships length apart. In that case, the ratio modelsize/diorama-area doesn't get too large. EJ Foeth -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "foeth" Subject: Tiny Drills found, but... I have found one company delivering drills by mail, with sizes from 0.05mm (0.0019") to 0.50mm (0.0197"). These drills have a 1mm shaft (0.03937"). Orderable at McMasterCarr, at 1330-995-5500, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Number 8904A plus extension, for each size. That's the good news. Now the bad news: They cost around $10 each for the large ones, and $20 for the small ones.
