A club member gave me a part can to use in thinning Humbrol for both hand and air brushing. Anyone know how it effects: styrene, epoxy, CA, automotive hand spray paints and primers, Bondo filler, Humbrol that is already on, and virgin Humbrol (fresh out of the can)? Cheers Frank Bayley Newmarket, Ontario CANADA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Jeff Herne Subject: Rusty's Okie Benefit Hi guys, You know, we argue, make bad jokes about our wives and our cats, we often come real close to trashing one another...but Rusty's efforts, and SMMLs response, truly reflects what we should be about. This is a hobby, it's meant to be fun, to provide us with a break from reality and the pressures of everyday life. We, myself included, often forget that. When a tornado comes along and destroys everything in the world you've built, your home, your belongings, your models, and oftentimes, your loved ones, it's nice to know there are people out there who share a common thread, who actually and honestly care. I have a couple of resin ship kits I'd like to send to Butch, a little late I guess, but better late than never. Bravo Zulu to everyone on SMML who helped Rusty, and Butch and his family, out in their time of need. I have one, but would very much like to buy another. If anyone has one they would like to sell, please let me know. << I'm sure you know this but Dremel no longer makes the table saw. I found this out when I tried to buy more belts and blades. The factory sent me the notice along with an order form to buy the last of the belts and blades that were in stock. Once they were gone, that was it so I ordered several. Those of you have these saws should treat them well. However there are other table saws on the market to take its place. I live on a tropical island, and I have this problem of fungus growing on the lens, I suppose from moisture. Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. << It's hard to imagine what the fungus is living on (in terms of carbon and nitrogen sources) if it's actually growing on the glass lens. If it is, it could be finger oil or something like that. Fungi will attack leather and cause it to deteriorate. Clean your lens with an alcohol based lens cleaner, but use lens tissue rolled up into a tube. Wet one end with lens cleaner, and handle with the other dry end. Don't let your fingers come in contact with the lens cleaner. One problem with detergent based or alcohol based fluids is that they will actually transfer finger oil onto a lens, unless you handle it as I described above. Also, you might want to store the camera carefully with your lens cap off to thoroughly dry out the area. Humid conditions and dark areas promote fungal growth. Tom Dougherty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Jeffrey Roberts" Subject: Re: 1941 HMS Exeter I have the same question that Mike Eisenstadt has. I want to build HMS Exeter in her final post-refit configuration but thus far have found only a half dozen photos, a small starboard elevation in Conway's and a silhouette in Warship Profile #13. A deck plan would be especially helpful but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mike, please feel free to contact me off list if you don't have access to Conway's or the other meagre material I listed above. I'll be happy to scan it and send copies to you. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Burl Burlingame / Pacific Monograph Subject: More Hunley Aloha John Harloe's note reminded me that the Cottage Industries' 1/32 kit is a very nice one, and a hefty piece of resin! The one I have seems to be based primarily on the full-sized Charleston reproduction and not on recent NPS drawings. Would't take much to correct it, however, just some details here and there. Our kit is 1/96, and it's about as big as your little finger. (Not Dave Merriman's little finger!) A second viewing revealed a line reel just forward of the aft torpedo rack. Not very big, however. The music is done by Randy Edelman, and it's in his "Gettysburg" mode. NPS surveys indeed don't show the aft cutwater. The bow has not been uncovered yet, so any spar apparatus is still speculative. The film shows an iron pole angled up from the bottom, secured by a chain, with the charge sitting an an opposite angle so that the torpedo is pointed directly forward at -- yes -- the approximate midpoint of the little submarine's thrust line. Makes sense. Burl Burlingame Pacific Monograph, 1124 Kahili Street, Kailua HI 96734 A historical interpretation company. Those looking for a robust replacement might want to consider the miniature saw by Preac. Unlike a lot of small table saws, this actually has enough power to make a cut. A bonus is that a lot of accessories are available for it. It is available from the Modeler's Boatyard, and a couple of other places on the web. Do a search for Preac and you will find it. I have both saws, and they each have their place. The Dremel, with its larger table, is better for big pieces. I made a crosscutting jig using some thin aircraft plywood that allows me to square larger sheet material (I use Gatofoam a lot for superstructures, and this is a neat way to get crisp edges). The biggest problem with the Dremel is that *&^% belt coming off in the middle of a cut! The Preac does not have that problem, and the fence is more rigid for rip cutting. Would anyone be interested in doing a fret of stuff in 1/192 scale for Mike West's (LoneStar Models) Civil War stuff. What I have in mind is a generic fret with several basket cage assemblies for the Monitor Turrets, some life boat davits, perhaps a few lifeboat seat frames and some misc stuff like chocks, flat hatches anchor davits and maybe some railing. What is needed is fairly simple and straight forward, and being from the cast iron age so to speak, not very fine. I could draw or sketch out most of what is needed, the main items being the cages for the turret tops. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Old Kits, sundry subjects Dremel saws and Hunley >> Subject: Other models you build, etc The 'problem' - if that is the right word - for the older modeller now is the variety and quality of what is available in all these different modelmaking hobbies. Whole collections of ships and figures have disappeared, sold or scrapped, as better quality models are available, Another example is my almost complete set of the Japanese 1/700 waterline series, made when first issued, before etched brass and Skywave sets. What can I do with them now? They take up space and I wouldn't dream of showing them to anybody, after they have seen a few WEM kits. Sad but they will most likely end up in the bin. << John: I don't know whether there'd be interest, but have you considered donating them to a children's library or school as an educational display or perhaps to a children's hospital as toys. All seem better than the bin! >> Subject: Sundry subjects A while ago, there were a bunch of photography tips on SMML. I live on a tropical island, and I have this problem of fungus growing on the lens, I suppose from moisture. Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. << Try storing your lenses in a container with a desiccant sack. Fungal growth is a known problem in the tropics. Affected lenses will have to be disassembled and professionally cleaned. >> Subject: WTB: Dremel table saws I noticed a couple of mentions in yesterday's post about Dremel table saws. I have one, but would very much like to buy another. If anyone has one they would like to sell, please let me know. << I've seen several on auction at Ebay >> Subject: Hunley Kit - 1/32nd Scale video tape on Civil War submarines and especially the Hunley. I would like to remind the SMML listers that we have been selling a 1/32nd kit of the Hunley (and the David & Keokuk) for several years. Our model is based on historical fact as interviewed by us of the divers of the wreck site. Many << I can attest to the quality of Cottage Industries kits. I have their Hunley(the older solid hull version built, and the newer full interior on the shelf) their Keokuk and david. All are surburb kits with incredible detail.. Alberto Rada did a review of the Keokuk for Warship and included some nice pictures. If anyone is looking for a change from those Yamatos and Flowers, the CIM kits are well worth a look. I have no connection with CIM other than having met William Blackmore, the owner and master builder of all the kits a few yeas ago. I simply want to make sure he stays in the business!!! :-) Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: Moisture on lenses Try storing the equipment with a couple of sachets of desiccated silica gel, which absorbs moisture from the air. It needs to be dried out in the oven periodically and can then be re-used. I always get mine from boxes of electronic equipment (computers etc.), most of which have one stuffed in there somewhere. In fact, aircraft are my primary modelling subject, from WW2 and onwards - even includes airliners. I guess there is one common denominator to my interests and that is WW2 and later. Cars - particulary fond of racing cars, figures, armour. Sci-fi is a no-no though. Does anybody know of any good hobby shops in the area or things of Naval interest that is should see? I will be at the dowtown Marriot. so directions from there would be most helpful. I know the convention I am going to be at, is planned at least two years in advance. Does anybody have any idea when the US Nats might be back in the Pacific Northwest. I know it was in Seattle in 1992, so it must be soon, right? Happy modeling. If you think painting small detail is difficult, try it with a playfull cat attacking the end of your brush! << Ah, the Joys of Cats and Modelling! Mine came into the study, jumped onto the workbench, sniffed the hull of the Leander I'm scratch-building & sat on it, a 1/700 Arrow (RN Type 21) and a 1/600 tall ship (name escapes me at the mo). Result: models everywhere, the cat had a painful seat & got chased out with me hard at her tail! She still does it, but not if I'm around! Oh, & I now put the models on a shelf she (to date) doesn't bother with while I'm not working on them! Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Philip Morgan" Subject: Lee 1/300 FFGs Hi! I have just seen the "new" Lee kit of the FFG in 1/300 scale and have a few questions that maybe one of you could answer for me. Firstly - the kits I have seen come without any decals or painting instructions - 3 kits were inspected in the same store, they were all without decals. Secondly, I understand that Lee label their kits in obscure scales, possibly to get around copyright problems (I have compared their kit to the Academy and both appear identical), so is this FFG actually 1/350 scale? Thirdly, the price - $29.95, which seems a little steep for a Lee kit. I know the hobby shop concerned has a habit of placing premium prices on kits they receive before anyone else in this area (their Airfix 1/48 Lightnings are currently priced at $74.95). Finally, a request: if anyone has either an Airfix SRN4 or one of the old kits issued by BP of the Empress of Australia and are willing to sell, I would be glad to hear from you. Regards, Philip Morgan. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: "Peter Mispelkamp" Subject: Hermes/ZG3 Sorry, you cannot use the airfix "Narvik" class DD guns on the Hermes - because the Airfix DD kit represents the Z-28 which carried 4 x 5.9". guns. They should be able to help with lager scale plans. I don't have their contact, but can probably chase it up. Hello all, My thanks to everyone who responded to my question. As is always the case with SMML, there were a lot of responses with different ways on going about it. I will experiment with the different suggestions and see which one works for me. Rusty, I will be looking forward to anything that you do on this topic for the Warship page. Again, my thanks to everyone. I started carving drop tanks for my 1/350 Enterprise airwing, and thought why am I do this? Why not carve a couple nice ones, and cast the rest? Only problem, I've never casted anything, and I'm not exactly sure how to go about it. I've found a few articles on mold making, but any first hand experience sure would be appreciated. Thanks!
