Sometime in late 44 or early 45, she received a pair of quad 40mm guns in lieu of these 20mm guns. I've look through George Gruner's Blue Water Beat: Two lives of the USS CA, Myron Smiths' Pictorial History of the USS CA, and various general references on US BB's, but have been unable to ascertain as to when this conversion occur relative to the change in her paint scheme from the dazzle camouflage. My questions are: 1. Did the California ever had both the 40mm guns and the dazzle camouflage at the same time? I would like to do my CW 1/700 TN as the CA with the 40mm guns and the dazzle paint scheme. << When the California was reconstructed and recommissioned in 1944, she had at this position the gallery of 20mm guns abreast of the funnel. Also, she was painted in the Ms. 32/16d scheme you mention. The refit that removed these 20mm's also was when her paint scheme was changed to Ms. 21. Thus, no, the 40mm's weren't carried at the same time as the dazzle scheme >> 2. Does the Iron Shipwright 1/350 kit of the Tennessee include the parts to do this version of the USS California? (Is it only a couple of gun tubs and 40mm guns, or were there more changes?) << The Tennessee, California, and West Virginia at one time in 1944 (around the Battle of Surigao Strait), with the exception of the main armament of the WeeVee, were identical. This is the point that I chose to design this kit. To make the kit into an 1943-early 44 Tennessee, the mainmast needs to be modified, and to do WeeVee, put the optional main battery turrets on. The California modification of the extra pair of 40mm quads was not built into the kit since I didn't have the particular details of how the mount was placed onto the deck, and the needed modifications would have made the kit specific to only the California rather than allow the kit to be built as any one of the three ships. Also, for her post-1945 refit look, there will be more 20mm mounts needed at different locations on the decks. Page 374 of Friedman's US Battleships has a sufficient plan and profile of what the differences would be. Jon Warneke Commander Series Models, Inc. I am Elmer J. Fudd, millionaire. Now I think that I will put the pocket-battleship in the battle just as it was. Thanks again. Platt" Subject: Re: Lightvessels Good evening to you all from the UK First of all, weren't the Aussies lucky at the cricket. Pakistan must have had Delly-Belly or something to have played like that. Sorry Shane, a bit off subject there but I couldn't resist it! Anyway, back to the subject of lightvessels. After extensive research and exhaustive comparison of enormous amounts of data the results are: Norway...Nil points. Only two kits have been produced as lightvessels. One was produced by Pyro in the US of the Nantucket lightvessel who then sold the rights to Lindberg. Examples can still be obtained for about $50-00 on E-Bay. Frog produced a kit of the South Goodwin lightvessel about 30 years ago. When they bit the dust the patterns were sold to a variety of Eastern European outfits who did not produce kits of it. The patterns were eventually sold to Revell who now sell kits under their name. I am informed by a reliable source that before the moulds deteriorated, the final 8000 or so kits were produced. The first run being delivered were in a lorry which caught fire and 5000 were destroyed, leaving about 3000 to be sold. Although being sold at cheap prices they will become a collectors item. (I have a whole loft full of the models) I am sure the above information is correct, unless of course you know different. Best wishes. John S. Is the camouflage pattern depicted on the boxtop accurate? If so it would make a great subject for a future build. Does anyone know if she wore a camouflage pattern or if she was just overall light grey? The other will most likely get the pattern with the false bow wave a'la Z-30 . .. after that I think a conversion into a Maass is in the cards . . . who knew you could have this much fun with plastic !!!!!! I have come across an article on German destroyers that was published in Sea Classics in the early 1970s which has a colour photo of Z-28 in overall light grey. Anyone wanting scans of this article just ask. There are 12 pages averaging 500k each. Any help you can provide will be plus. This is going to be a "down the road" project, as I've got to rebuild my entire "fleet" after the movers got ahold of it.
