Goldman" Subject: Re: Painting Instructions for landing craft Regarding the colors of LCVPs: I ran this past my father who retired from the Navy as navigator of USS Charles Carroll APA28, and I looked through some of his old photographs. The Carroll made the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, Southern France, and Okinawa and was part of TransDiv 3. He said, "We did not have any diamond markings that I recall. Boat numbers were on the ramps and on the sides. Total colors matched the relatively dark gray of our hull.I do not recall any numbers on the engine hood. There were no changes that I recall at any time in boat markings." He added that even after the ship was repainted in her Pacific camouflage scheme, the boats remained their original overall gray. If you go to my website, you can see a buildup I did of the old Lindberg LCVP kit. As of todays date nothing has appeared, and I am a little dissapointed. The offer will remain on the table until the first of January 2000. If a list has not been submitted by that date then the high proof will be consumed, and with NO ice added. So get off your fat bums and do some real research. Cordially yours. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: PASO34@webtv.net (Andy Greer) Subject: 1:700 CVL & 1:700 Drydocks Good day to all shipmodelers and I hope you can help me on this day. I am a modeler somewhere between beginning and intermediate and I have a Dragon Modern Sea Power Series U.S.S. Princeton 1:700 model. Has anyone out there ever done this model and if so, can you give some advice. I am not good enough to do the paint schemes of WWII so I will paint it in Haze Gray/Red etc of peacetime. By the way, what color was the flightdeck in peacetime in the short time these vessels were in commission following the war. Also, I would love to put the ship into a diorama of a 1:700 drydock(to simulate her first post-war maintenance period, etc) but I have never seen any type of this kit. Drydocks fascinate me, espceially the floating ones we used to use. Any help in doing a CVE/CVL in general, this kit in particluar (painting, problems, etc) or drydocks I could use would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. It still is... a standard ingredient in many a kiddy's school lunchbox! << Careful here, there's some rather mature 'kids' who still like their Blue Riband in their lunch boxes........ My father built the Tamiya version of the kit well over a decade ago. Back then the Tamiya kit had you paint a swastika over the anchor chains and all of my references on German ships show swasticas there also. Well I open up the box for the Bismark and imagine my suprise as there is no instruction to paint it! So then I proceeded to look through all of my resources on German capital ships and was able to find pics of just about every other German ship's bow except for the one I care about! So is it there or not? Thanks, John Prall P.S. I suppose I had better not open up a can of worms about the color of the tops of the turrets? :) Hi John, Re: your query on the Bismarcks turrets. Latest research shows that two days before she was sunk the tops of A & B turrets were painted in hot pink with yellow polka dots & reversed on the aft turrets ;-)). As for the swastika, that could be a PC consideration?? Ballard's book on finding the Bismarck shows the swastica still on the ship, but IIRC it was painted over sometime during the operation. As stated previously, I will sponsor this event by judging it and providing prizes for the winners. To make this event happen now and in the future, all interested will have to step up to bat, and build entries, arrange to have them entered (by yourself, or a friend, into the IPMS(USA) contest, to be in this contest). I would like all interested to contact me by e-mail: mailto:stevewiper@aol.com , and leave a brief message that you are interested and plan to enter. I would also like you to contact me at my tables in the vendor area. I will have a meeting at my vendor tables, to hear all suggestions and decide what subject will be modeled next year. I would like the entrants to decide the following years subject. Remember, if this is to succeed, YOU, the modeler, must participate, and make an effort to get any others involved. I will commit to complete sponsorship of this event now and in all future years, only if there are enough people who enter. It is much appreciated. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "chris" Subject: Viking Texas I'm just getting back on line with a new computer after a total crash and burn of my old one.... while going through the many SMML posts that were piled up in my mailbox I saw several references to the Viking 1/700 USS Texas and had some questions: 1. Is the model available in Waterline version or is it available in full hull only? At one time I have received a message from Viking Models stating that there were only going to issue a Full Hull version, but in the Pacific Front Catalog updates, there are full hull and waterline versions listed. 2. I haven't seen any full reviews of the model itself (other that to say that the photoetched brass was superb and that the aircraft supplied were unrecognisable - although I did read through all of the postings rather quickly....). Was the model pretty accurate itself? In a review of the 1/350 version put out by Viking, it had listed that such details as the plated over casemate positions had been rounded off rather that squared off as they actually are.... have these (and any other) discrepancies been corrected? 3. Not to long ago in the Navismagazine, it was listed that Classic Warships was to release a 1/700 Texas..... Has anyone heard if this is still in the works? Any idea as to a release date? How about the era which she is to be depicted? Hopefully I'm not asking for a information that's already been discussed... Thanks! cn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "PADDY TAYLOR" (by way of Greg Lee) Subject: Visit to the United States Hi all SMMLers, I live in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and have been building plastic models of mainly passanger liners for many years now. Next week 5th - 9th July I'll be in Manhatten, then Washington and Florida until the 23rd July. I was hoping that some local readers of your list could advise me where best in those areas I could visit hobby shops and/or museums to see ship models. My e-mail address is mailto:magnummo@iafrica.com Many thanks, Paddy Taylor Hi Paddy, A good place to go in Manhatten apparrently is Shaya Novak's shop The Naval Base. Can't vouch for it personally, as I've never been to the States, but it does come highly recommended from other SMMLies. Howard" (by way of Greg Lee) Subject: DD-304 and DD-306 Info While rambling through the building I work in, I found a framed enlargement of two USN flush-deck "four-piper" DDs visiting Crescent City, California in 1920. (They were anchored offshore; CC's harbor isn't THAT big!) No names were given, but their numbers, 304 and 306, were clearly visible. Can anyone clue me in on names and histories of these two vessels? Was either one involved in the Point Arguello disaster, which took place a few years later? Thank you! Doug Howard Brookings, Oregon, USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Jeff Herne Subject: Where are we going with TF58? Sam, The reasoning behind looking for a list of ships is so we can identify those ships which are present in Burt McDowell's Pearl Harbor Pano-file. This series of photos is the basis for our Pearl Harbor Dio Project, on which 25 or so SMML-ies are presently working. By matching a list with the images, we can ascertain that certain vessels were there while others were not. BTW, thanks Craig and Sam, the data did help expedite some research were doing. Jeff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: John Snyder Subject: RN deck colours I've noted a number of posts lately specifying wholesale use of B15 for decks. I'm sitting here looking at a couple of original Admiralty camo plans (don't ask--if I tell you, I'll have to kill you) for HMS FARNDALE. One uses MS4A, 507A, 507C, and MS3; the other uses B5, 507A, 507C, and MS3. Both call for the deck color to be MS2. So...I guess we'll all have to wait for Alan Raven's books on RN camo for the definitive answer(s). I'm trying to locate models for the ships I served on while on active duty. Right now I'm looking for Charles F. Adams class (USS Towers DDG-9) and Forrest Sherman class (USS Bigelow DD-942) destroyers. I want them for the mantle in my den so I guess the scale should be somewhere between 1 to 200 and 1 to 400. I haven't built any models since I was a young, and then not very well, so I'm a basically starting from ground zero. Please factor that into the equation. Any suggestions or comments you can provide me will be most appreciated. Subject: Hansa Brandenburg W.29 I know, I know, it's not a ship, but it IS a floattie thing, being German Navy and all. I have acquired an article out of an old copy of Scale Models, February, 1983, on the Hansa Brandenburg W.29, to be continued in the April '83 issue. My question: Does anyone out there have the April '83 issue of this magazine? It looks like a British publication, but as all I have is the article itself, viciously ripped from it's home, I can't tell. Specifically, I'd also like any and all information on the Hansa in Finnish service. Thanks for your time and help. And Shane, thanks for the lead on the WW1 list, I also posted there. Alan R. Millen Hi Alan, The issue in question is Scale Models(now Scale Models International), April 1983 & is a three page article, with nice drawing & photos. If they can't help you on the WW1 list, we should be able to help out here. Lot's of good general modeling info for us other small scale folks. The recent series of exchanges on the Graf Spee reminded me that I have had,for about thirty years, a Ringo Toy Corp. Authentic Models # C581/200 kit of the Graf Spee. No scale given, but the kit measures 20" stem to stern: thus, if the Spee was about 650 feet, that would make it about 1/400 scale. Blue plastic. Look's like all parts (except paper flag) are present. Most still on runners. I'm not a kit collector, but I do know that Ringo models (in original box) are somewhat prized by collectors. I honestly have no idea how to price the kit. So, let's pretend we're ebay and have an auction (if the webmaster permits). Anyone who want's to bid (or just let me know how much they think it's worth), please e-mail me. I also have an original box Heller Aurora but I suspect that's not as rare. Again, I'm neither a collector nor a hobby shop. Just thought someone in this group might have been searching for that particular Ringo kit. Bidding will remain open until midnight, Central Daylight Time, 11 July 1999. gjstein@mindspring.com Hi gang, I think in this case, it would be better to deal with gjstein direct with bidding for the kit. Unless, you'd like to inform propective buyers of ballpark prices for what the kit is worth Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
