The museum features the USS Ling, SS-297, and they've added a Japanese Kaiten and a German Seehund. While you're there, be sure to stop by MY museum, the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame, located in Teterboro, about 2 miles from the Ling. Although it's not naval, you can see my 5 foot USS New Jersey and a bunch of neat airplane stuff. To Felix, I didn't know you were in NYC, we're all of 15 minutes apart. Call me sometime and we'll do lunch. I believe it was to be out this summer. I cannot find any mention of this book, (That doesn't mean much given my time for personal projects and research is limited.) Does anyone here have any knowledge about the publication date? This would be a real plus to help detail my 1/48 "Flower". John Frohock USS Salem Model Dept. There has been talk of one around but I have never been able to ascertain who produces it. << Chris, MURPHEY'S RULE made an aluminum ruler almost 12 inches long. It has 1/700 along one edge and 1/350 along the other. As far as I know they have been out of business for years. I have a few left in my shop. If you want one, contact me off line. You should ask Steve if he still makes them. Mark Knowlton -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Philip Morgan" Subject: General News Hi gang! I just thought you may be interested in a few items of news/gossip I have picked up lately. 1. For Sydney-based members, September 2000 looks good for modellers with a feast of liners booked for berths in Sydney during the Games. I understand both QE2 and Grand Princess will be here, although it will be interesting to see which of the 2 gets Circular Quay, as I don't think there are any other berths here that could handle ships of that size. Also rumored is one of the Titanic replicas, although I have not been able to substantiate this. 2. The US Government recently offered our navy the four Kidd class destroyers to replace our FFGs. Our government rejected the offer, instead opting for a multi-billion dollar upgrade of the FFGs which will see them refitted to a standard somewhat less than the Kidds are already without any upgrade...................this is the same government that wants to introduce an inflationary GST when the rest of the world keeps telling us how great our economy is at the moment without any GST. 3. I hear there are some within our navy that want to re-commission the Oberons and use the Collins class for target practice. After all, the Oberons proved time and again in exercises with the Americans that they are very difficult to catch, on more than one occasion sneeking through and sinking the carriers!! I have heard that the US may be offering some surplus Los Angeles class or new built Seawolfs as alternatives to the Collins. Due to Australia being a signatory to the NPT (nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty), I don't see this as being accepted. 4. Re: the Collins: when they are in dry dock, the propellors are always shrouded (maybe they are going to be our next America's Cup challengers.......?), I believe this is to keep their details classified as they are not conventional propellors. Can anyone shed light on this? 5. The correct formula for Sodium Hydroxide is NaOH, not NaNo which is Sodium Nitrate.........THAT explains why I blew the chemistry lab up at school. 6. Can anyone tell me if the SRN4s are still in service and, if not, what happened to them? Philip Morgan. Hi Phil, AFAIK, the SRN4's are still in service. A recent "Ships Monthly" (in the last 6 months) has mentioned them. I asked SMML'rs if they help provide the data, I would be more than happy to build and maintain the site. As of today, I have not gotten one reply. << Don't let that discourage you it's summer time and the messages have slowed considerable due to the other things we all must do at this time of year. >> This has not stopped me from actually doing the webiste, I am simply plowing ahead with the project and doing the research on my own. I will ask SMML again, If you are interested in contributing to my project of creating a ship camouflage website, please feel free to provide me with data either by e-mail or directly on SMML. Right now, I am working on USN Battleship Schemes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. << John, I will try to help, but was really hoping you would start with DD's considering the uncertainty in the camo they wore in late 42. Why not put up a rough draft so no one duplicates your original research (there's that word again!) Hopefully I can regurgitate some facts and not speculation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "larsenal" Subject: Re: Heller ship kit About the Victor Schoelcher, the kit is basically correct and depicts one of the 9 Avisos Escorteurs in service during the 70's and 80's. Unfortunately there is not over here a book about these ships. If you give me your address I'll send you some information to improve the quality of the Heller kit. The Victor Schoelcher was sold to Uruguay in 1988 and was modified for use to the Uruguyan Navy. Yesterday I came across a Lee 1:300 model of HMS Aurora. Does anyone know of its quality or the timeframe the model represents? I was able to see the contents of the Lee FFG kit, how do they compare? I am just interested since they are both $30.00 -- less than a 1:700 FFG! I will have a flyer for the new ship modeling magazine, "Maritime Modeler" at my tables at the IPMS(USA) National Convention in Orlando, FL., July 21-24. This mag will be debuting in January 2000, and will be published by Hundman Pub, which, in my opinion, produces the best mags in the US model railroad market. Stop by and pick one up. Some off the beatten path things are---- two unique / very nice museums that most folks miss are the Merchant Marine Academy located at Great Neck on the old Chrysler Estate, and the SUNY Maritime Academy located on Ft Schuyler at Throgs Neck just to the west of the Throgs Neck Bridge,(sorry I don't have the addresses) but both I think are now on the WWW if someone want to search/look. Both have interesting if not excellent collections of powered military Transport/freighter, merchant, passanger and commercial ships in various scales. With the MMA having many of the old Gibbs and Cox merchant and military ship models. and an excellent library. SUNY MA also has a large collection of merchant ship plans, most post WWII that they were trying to get together in late 97 for access and maybe sale. They are both located about an hour from downtown NYC. Also located around NYC are the old forts built by Robert E. Lee and many of the souther generals after the Mexican American War. They are part of the original old coastal defense forts, Ft Hamilton, has the best museum, a small museum is at FT Totten and Ft Wadsworth located oposite FT Hamilton (Hamilton is at the base of the Verrazano Bridge in Brooklyn and Wadsworth is at the base in Staten Island) and is operated by the parks department. Hope this helps anyone going to NYC and will stir some interest in these less well know sites.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Classic Warships Web Site Classic Warships now has a web site up and running, at about 90%. Words cannot do it justice, you will have to see it to believe it. This is by far my best creation yet. The photo etch is mind boggling, example-14 parts for the SK radar alone. Naturally it will take a bit of time to gather the necessary information together to create a model of the winning subject, the 'Normandie' and as anyone who has had any experience at all of resin kits will know that, due to the size and mass of this ship, even in 1/600 scale, it will not be cheap. The size is comparable to the WEM 1/350 scale HMS Sheffield so be prepared for a price tag in the region of 250 British Pounds for a full hull model. I will commit myself and the expense of setting up the project, if those of you who voted for this model will commit yourselves by either forwarding your credit card numbers to White Ensign Models or sending a cheque/money order to place a deposit with them to secure your order and to ensure that my efforts will be worthwhile. I will need a minimum of 10 (ten) firm orders to do this, and you have until the 31st July to decide. If I do not receive enough orders by then, HMS Dido will be built regardless of orders as the costs will be considerably less. (Around 50 British Pounds). I am sure that those of you who know the Normandie will appreciate the size of the task I am faced with. Even in 1/600 scale an Ocean liner is huge and of considerable mass, that is why I am asking for support from those that would like a copy of the model. If I have that support then I will do my best to ensure that you have value for money. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
