I hope you all enjoyed it. Also, happy Independence Day to the yanks amongst us. Before long she'll know you've absolutely lost your mind (she didn't think you had much of one anyway - you are a modeler) but now you're acting like Mork from Ork;>)) Rob, Sorry about the website, but glad to know my company isn't controlling my access to it. At one point during the battle, Admiral Scott was concerned that he was firing on his own destroyers, he ordered his flotilla leader to flash his fighting lights. "The glimmer of the appropriate small cluster of lights close off the starboard side of the flagship dispelled the admiral's doubts, and at 2351 he ordered fire resumed." -- "Guadalcanal" by Richard B. Frank, pg. 302. There was much flashing of fighting lights in this battle. However, none were described flashing at Savo or the Naval Battles of Guadalcanal. Haven't got to Tassaforanga yet. By the way, this is an excellent book. The size was a little intimidating, but Frank is a great writer. The narrative moves along like an Ambrose book. The narratives of the sea battles are vivid, or about a vivid as you can get considering some of the confused mauling that went on in the Solomons in late 1942. Aoshima do the Japanese Mutsu and Nagato but these are pretty poor kits. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Black Decal Lettering There are several relatively answers to this one. There are numerous decal alphabet sets in several typefaces by several manufacturers in a bevy of sizes (whew, is that enough prepositional phrases?) made for the model railroad folks. Check them out at your nearest well-equipped hobby shop. You probably can also find them in the Walthers catalog (which may be online, though I haven't checked). Alternatively, there are also black dry transfer alphabets available at your favorite graphics or art supply store. Use these to create the name on blank decal paper, seal with a clear coat, and decal as usual. Thanks Andy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Making decals of ship names >> Does anybody know where I can find these, or have any ideas how I can do the name? (Scale is approximately 1/400). << It's easy to make your own ships names for the stern. All you need is dry transfer lettering and clear decal film. Finding dry transfer lettering the proper design is impossible, but Helvetica block passe for this style of lettering nicely in 1/350 and 1/400. Rusty White "Yeah I want Cheesy Poofs" Flagship Models Inc. http://warship.simplenet.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Kenneth H. Goldman" Subject: Re: Black Decal Lettering Black decal lettering is easy to make in a computer and print out on clear decal film run through a laser printer. Scaling the letters can even be done trial and error by printing out test runs on regular bond paper until the size is right for you. The only extra step is to hit your new decal with some spray varnish, Microscale or even Krylon Matte Finish, to make sure the toner stays put. I also recommend printing first on paper, then cutting out a piece of the decal film a little larger than the image and scotch taping it over the exact spot on the paper. Next, run the paper back through the printer in the same direction. This prevents toner build up on the rest of the film, keeping it clean for later use. Occasionally, the toner might lift up on the decal film as it comes from the printer, so you might have to make a couple to get a good one. Also, if you can run the paper, with the film taped on, through the printer in a straight path, do so. Subject: Iron Shipwright Every once in awhile a good thing happens in this hobby, and recently I have read a few good customer service stories on this list. Here is my own, which happened only today. I purchased the Iron Shipwright USS Alaska at my local hobby shop last Saturday, and when I got home, I noticed that the hull just wasn't very well cast. My previous experience with Iron Shipwright had been good, so I wrote to Jon Warneke and told him of my dilemma. He wrote back within hours and apologized, stating that I'd receive a new hull ASAP, but that his partner (Ted Paris) would not be back until Wednesday. I figured "Okay, I'm not in a rush, I can wait a few weeks." Well, today, just seven days after my original email, I received my new hull, and I have to tell you it is beautiful. Ted must not have had time to unpack before he poured me a new hull! I want to thank them both for their incredible support of their product. I don't know much about modern sub screw design, except that they're very hush-hush. << Most submarine screws are shrouded when in drydock for basic security reasons. If it becomes known that you have a seven bladed prop, then the guys in the sonar shack can use that data to not only figure out who you are, but figure out how fast you're going (blade rate => RPM => speed). If they don't know for sure the numbers of blades on your screw it becomes more of a guessing game. Folks: The annual Warship book, 1999-2000 has been postponed until about Sept 1999, a mere 9-10 months late, Info by letter from Batsford, problems due to the change of ownership of Conway Maritime Press. It will be worth waiting for. The Chatham Publishing Spring catalog is out, and I ordered up 'The Naval War in the Med, 1940-43', for 25 of Lizzies Pounds - will be a good read. Also available, is 'The Bismarck Chase', by Robert J Winklareth, at £20. If anyone wants the address, Tel number of Chatham, I'll post it here. Osprey Military books have joined the 'www', at: http://www.osprey-publishing.co.uk They dont have any Naval books or battles as yet, except softbacks on Midway and Guadalcanal, but there are new books out on Naval Aircraft, Dauntless, Helldiver etc in the Air Combat series. Last week on UK TV we got to see 'Battlegroup', it may have been a repeat, but lots of pics of A/c and CVs in the Gulf of Arabia etc, very interesting - no, the VCR was not running..... One of our local hobby shops gives you a birthday card worth 10% off their already discounted prices, for the month of your birth. (Very sweet deal.) I knew the Spee was a "Pocket Battleship" but I didn't realize the size differecne until I put it up against the Yamato and New Jersey. Looks more like our Heavy Cruisers of the era. Does anyone out there have a list of what is available in 1200th and smaller scale? I'm particularly interested in Japanese stuff, but would take any list I could get at this point. Also, J-aircraft.com has a new reviews editor and we'd love to get some ship reviews up for any of the ships that we have listed. If you'd like to contribute a review, please drop a note to Brent Theobald at theobat1@airmail.net Thanks in advance.
