Panay Hi Is there any color photo, besides the one at Warship, of the Smithsonian model on the Panay? Or any other color reference. I remember a film on the Panay incident, I believe with Steve McQueen, any one recalls the films Name ? I am impatiently waiting for the Commander Series model kit on the subject and trying to gather Information on the subject, while reading The Panay Incident by Hamilton Darby Perry SALUDOS Alberto -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: Marines Magazine, Algerie Book, Warship 1998-99 Hi, I know that in the USA a bookstore called "Articles of War" in Skokie, Illinois has stocked a number of books and magazines from Marines Editions in the past few years, and in the UK a store called "Motor Books" just off Charing Cross Road in London has stocked them as well. I think Bill Gruner of Pacific Front Hobbies has stocked some of them as well, but I'm not sure. Speaking of such things, does anyone know if the Marines Editions book on the heavy cruiser Algerie is out yet? I think it was supposed to come out this year. I think that the volume of "Warship" that is very late coming out is "Warship 1998-99," not 1999-2000," unless they've decided to rename it because it is so late! The U.S. Naval Institute is saying that it will arrive in October. Good luck! It was his first, of many, sea tours (he retired in '94 after 35 years). This year, I bought Commanders/Iron Shipwrights OHP Frigate to present him with a model of his last sea tour ( USS Clifton Sprague) he was her Command Chief. The size difference was amazing. In scale, the DD is much Shorter and narrower than the Frigate. I served aboard a Knox class FFG (USS Miller) which seems to be closer in size to the old DD's. I would be interested in putting a model of a new CVN, ie. Italieri's "Johnny Reb" (USS John C. Stennis) along side a model of my first sea tour (USS Ranger). I know Ranger would be dwarfed. Ranger was a Forest Fire (Forrestal) class 990' WL 1052 LOA. The Reb is 1040 WL and 1092 LOA. Even at 1/700 the size difference would be more than obvious. The more I think about this project, the more interested in class comparisons I become. Any idea what that would be worth playing Scrabble?? Hi, Ummm, not much methinks, no high scoring letters there. How do you have an Imperial Navy when the All-Highest is in exile in Holland? Yours, James D. Gray -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Michael Connelley" Subject: Painting Hello: Two questions for the masses tonight. 1) Should I paint the hull or the decks first on my Arizona model? What are the pros and cons here? 2) What are some simple ways to filter paint. My paint has a bunch of tiny chunks in it that clog the airbrush nozzle. Cheers Mike Connelley P.S.: Regarding building 1/700 BBs, I'd go with the Yamato and Fuso. You gotta dig the Fuso class superstructures! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Raynor Johnston" Subject: HMS Canopus 1899 Greetings all, has anyone any idea of a source of basic plans i.e. elevation and plan view of this ship. Regards Raynor Johnston -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: Re: Fighting lights >> The use of fighting lights at night in the Royal Navy was almost never used, (far too dangerous). << Actually the Royal Navy made extensive use of fighting lights. The ability to recognise ones compatriots in a confused night engagement was vital - to know who to sink. If they weren't used (as in the Haguro episode) it was because someone forgot to switch them on. Jean-Cyrille -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Fernando, Yohan" Subject: Re: 1/700 BB's Doc, Why don't you replace the Graf Spee with the Scharnhorst or Gneisenau? They were much closer to real battleships than any of the 'pocket battleships'. Pocket battleships were battleships only in name and really were closer to heavy cruisers.
