Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Re: how do you tell the difference between the two Duane posed an interesting trivia question, easily answered: USCG swabs has a shield on the lower sleeve, and last but not least, had to be over 6 feet tall so they could wade ashore when their boat sinks. One thing that I miss are color schemes of designs (one there is - it's very good)with decks... Good luck with your work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Tom Dean Subject: SS Canberra's Helo Decks I think there were actually two decks installed. One forward of the bridge and one midships. In the book "Weapons of the Falklands Conflict" by Bryan Perret ISBN O 7137 1450 6 there is a picture of her refuelling from a RFA tanker that shows the forward deck fairly well. In the book "No Picnic" by Major General Julian Thompson Royal Marines, ISBN 0 436 52052 4 there are a couple of pictures of midships decking. Fairly detailed as they show the Marines working out on it etc. Tom Dean Hamilton, Ontario Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Jens H. Brandal" Subject: Yamatoholics on holiday? Hi fellow SMML'ers, Since I haven't received any answers to my question in volume 603 or so, I thought I'd give a little reminder. Knowing Tamiya's reputation for accuracy, and the fact that they sometimes make little blunders in their research; is the Tamiya 1:350 Yamato really accurate for the period it is claimed to be? If the "Super Illustration: Battleship Yamato" is correct, then there will be some modification to the weapons fit, but so will the mid 1944 refit. All I want is an opinion from people with more books than me on the Yamato that can confirm either way before I start cutting plastic. Also, the instructions tell you to paint the circular panels on top of the 12.7 cm high angle gun turrets silver. Are these supposed to be skylight windows? If so silver will look terribly wrong... Jens Hi Jens, I'm sure the Yam....hics will be posting shortly, once they get over the shock of someone encouraging them again ;-)) Shane - ducking for cover really fast!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Sheridan, John" Subject: Re: USN Warship Camouflage Site >> I don't have to be gentle, You have the start of a great site and a tremendous service to the modeling community. << Thank-you for the kind words. >> I hope that you are planning a table that breaks out the various "Measures" into their actual colors, and in the future even a cross reference to commercial lines of paints. << Yes, I am planning exactly that in the future. I will also be referencing paint, paint mixes, and a certain set of reference chips by a well-known SMML member . I will also branch-out into other navies if and when I get data for them. I think that your site is something very useful, for all of us. I am waiting for the cruisers camouflage section. We should help him with it and try to make further events and sites of this kind Filipe Ramires -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Emden Reply to Arjun's question. The Emden wreck is all but gone. There are some machinery parts, prop shaft supports, and a portion of the keel left, not much. This info, I got from a book obtained through Christian Schmidt Books, titled SMS Emden 1909-1914, by P.C. Huff, the absolute last word on the Emden. There were some pic's of the above mentioned subject, in color. If interested, this 148DM book($100.00) is the best photo source for the Emden. Steve Wiper/Classic Warships ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Brent Jernigan Subject: 1913 russian Izmail Just curious to know if anyone has seen plans or kits for the Russian battlecruisers of the Izmail project: Izmail, Borodino, Navarrin... Laid down in 1913, sold to Germany in 1922, scrapped in 1923. So far I've only been able to locate a profile drawing & a painting, but no definitive source of inof for what the hullform looked like below the waterline... Any ideas? Thanks, Brent Jernigan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: clydew@matra.com.au (Clyde Witcombe) Subject: Emden Wreck Arjun, The information I have is that the wreck of the Emden was scrapped in 1950. Hi Guys, I have been contacted by a fella that is looking for a model of the USS Coral Sea. I seem to recall that Revell had one a while ago. Does anyone know of an available kit or have one in their closet they might part with? Maybe even one built up. If someone has one or knows of one, contact me off list if you desire and I will put you in contact with the guy looking for it. Just trying to do a favour for an old sailor. John Frohock ca139johnf@aol.com USNSM http://www.uss-salem.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: "Show-off" George Washington SSBN I actually built that dog. It's a good thing it was a cutaway model because the decks didn't fit the hull (too wide). If I remember correctly the missile tubes were too large for the holes in the decks and the control room was laid out backwards. It was a "fit the box scale", something like 1:232. Agreed, the Revell kit was really, really bad!!! Actually, even the old Renwal kits, although much superior to the Revell, are quite wrong as to detailed internal layout. There were many mistakes, the worse being the engineering spaces. In the Renwal kits, at no point does a propeller shaft actually enter the engineering spaces. Also, nothing that looks like steam turbines or bull-gearing for the shaft drive. I have a couple of the old Renwal kits, and one of my (very) long term projects is to add some of these conjectural details. Now, a planset for one of these old SSBNs are in The National Archives II (it's the old Abraham Lincoln, SSBN 602, decommed in 81 and scrapped in '94). However it is STILL CLASSIFIED!! Guess the Navy still doesn't want someone looking at the engineering plant. Hence, my details will be a best guess, but I've already bought some generator and turbines from Plastruct for the project. Other details, such as the area where the inner hull "necks" in in the torpedo room will also be fun to figure out.... Plan to add a lot of overhead "plumbing" and wiring, too.... The two best shops I have found in the area are scale model supplies on Lexington Blvd, just off the interstate. And the other is Hub Hobby in Little Canada on Minnesota ave. These are a 120 mile drive for me, but the best in the area. Hope its not too late and its helpful. Does anyone know what this equates to in f.ex. Humbrol's colourscheme ? In advance thanks from arne.rolstad@narvesen.no -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Raynor Johnston" Subject: Batchelor and tinplate techniques Hi, Some years ago now a British modeller by the name of Batchelor wrote a few articles on modelling ships of the Royal Navy in the larger scales using tin plate to actually frame up and plate hulls. I believe that they were included in some issues of British modelling magasines though I have one chapter in a book on warship modelling. Can anyone advise what those issues were or even the magazine in question I would be most appreciative. thanks Raynor Johnston -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Jean-Cyrille WAAG" Subject: RE: Marines Web site Hello Tim, Contact me off list and I'll try to help you get that copy of Marines Magazine about Scharnhorst. PLEASE HELP!! Hi Guys, Well, we're back (sort of). Thanks to Peter Hall for standing by for us. As a result of an apparent cock-up by an organisation trying to re-format our main PC's HD with Win 98, to make a tape back-up system work, to enable us to successfully back up our data against misfortune... we have lost our entire inbox, address book, and everything pertaining to the E-Mail and customer database (as well as a LOT of other files..the upgrading of my ISP's software alone is still ongoing... anyone know a good business/software lawyer over here????). To all past, current, and, potentially future, customers, suppliers, friends and allies, could I ask that you PLEASE SEND US YOUR NAME and E-MAIL ADDRESS a.s.a.p., to enable us to start the VERY long process of rebuilding. I managed to reply to most messages at the weekend but I know that there were about a dozen orders awaiting reply/processing, as well as a number of general enquiries, and at least one request for a missing part, all of which arrived on Monday morning. These were on the machine when the computer was taken away on Monday for the work. Everything had been wiped out by the time we got the machine back on Tuesday evening, despite the company guaranteeing "re-installation of customer data". Fortunately, the most-frequently used Word processing files were transported across to our back-up PC, as I needed to carry on working while this PC was away (as were the zips with 3 years of work on kit and etched brass instructions, labels etc...), thank goodness. Therefore, I do have most folk's credit card details for example, and recent order info. So, to ALL of you out there, if you send us your E-Mail details now, as soon as I get this lot up and running, you'll be the FIRST to hear of some very nice "subscriber-only" specials that we will be running (hopefully!) in late August. If you have any further questions or queries, please don't hesitate to ask, although it will take a while to reply, so please bear with us (she says, weeping pitifully into her keyboard..). Incidentally, I just had a message in from Steve Wiper of Classic Warships who will be going to this year's IPMS National Convention in Florida. He has kindly offered to distribute special offer flyers from ourselves, on WEM gear, from the Classic Warships stand (Steve is tall and dark with a large bushy moustache for ease of recognition..). Mike Czibovic of Corsair Armada, and John Snyder (yes, I've SEEN that uniform.. pretty amazing he can still get into it at his age!!) will also be on the stand, so please go over and introduce yourselves and ask for a complimentary WEM flyer while you're there. Thanks for your patience! Caroline and Dave Carter White Ensign Models (PS As Peter's re-sending the 1/600 HMS Hood instructions, which WERE lost, we will be printing these up tomorrow, enabling us to ship the photoetched brass detail sets to folks who pre-ordered). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: GrafSpee34@aol.com Subject: Scarce Lindberg LST kit for sale on eBay Out of production Lindberg LST kit, complete unbuilt in box now up for grabs on eBay!
