Anyone have a suggestion on where to find this kit at a really really good price? Thanks, Mark -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Duane Fowler Subject: USCG Uniforms Hello All, Looks like you're all up on your uniforms! The difference between the USCG and the USN sailor's uniform was that the USCG included a contrasting (black with the white uniform and white with the blue uniform) shield on the right sleeve. A white shield was also placed on the right sleeve of the pea coat. The white billess caps (Donald Duck hats) were used until 1974. Other than that they were the same, except for the cork on a string that every Coasty carried in case the bathtub leaked... Best regards, Duane Fowler -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: hpetersen@zebra.net (Dr. Hazel Petersen) Subject: Japanese Submarine Sinkings Thanks to those who responded to my USS Columbus query some time ago. I have been talking to my Dad about his service on the Columbus at the end of WWII. He tells me that after the war was over, the Japanese subs were taken out in a group and sunk by naval gunfire. The part that interests me is this. One of the subs to be sunk was the one that sank the USS Indianapolis. My Dad tells me that it was separated from all the other subs and that a US destroyer went out beyond the horizon, got up a full head of steam and ran toward the sub. It started firing before it came up over the horizon and continued until it the sub sank; then the US ships opened up and sank all the remaining subs. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there was any coverage of this (books, movies, still pictures). Since part of the operation had to do with the Indianapolis, I would think there would have been official as well as media interest. I haven't been able to find anything about this at all, but then I don't really know where to look. Any ideas? Thanks, Glenn Merrill -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Caroline Carter" Subject: LOSS OF DATABASE BUT.... But....... Wow!! Thanks SO much to everyone out there who overwhelmed us totally with such an amazing response.. and you certainly find out who your friends are!! What a great bunch of guys n gals you are! Losing everything that we did was awful, but even worse was losing contact with all our modelling friends from all over the world, most of whom are SMMLlies of course. If you haven't sent us your details already, please do! I have over 200 contacts re-established already. I WILL try to get round to sending everyone a "thank-you" message, but sleep deprivation's hitting pretty hard at this time. We WILL actually be getting some orders out today to folks, Thanks to some of you who HAVE re-sent, or gone via Peter. As I come across any queries or gaps that may be sorted, I will post these on SMML.. I'm sure Shane won't mind. Incidentally, I wish him all the best with his back injury. I am sure Mistress Lorna is looking after him. Thanks once again, Caroline and Dave, White Ensign Models http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models/ Glad to hear you are no longer weeping hysterically into your keyboard and for those SMMLies out there who haven't done so, send Caroline your details. Better yet send her an order, so she can afford to sue the arses off the guys who wrecked her computer :->>> Mistress Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Jonson Subject: USS Somers Shane - Any knowledge of models of the USS Somers? Thanks, John Jonson I'm throwing this to the list, there must be someone out there who knows more than I do about this and Shane is on painkillers so don't ask questions of him :-))) Mistress Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "chris" Subject: Re: "Show Off George Washington SSBN Model If anyone is really interested, I have a copy of the instructions for the Revell U.S.S. George Washington SSB(N)598 model copyrighted 1978..... I built the model long ago..... the model's gone but I still have the instructions for some unknown reason.... There is no text or ship history - just the assembly instructions..... Drop me a note by e-mail if interested and I'll see what can be arranged.... later cn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Cooper, Mike" Subject: Hood Colours Dear All On the basis of Alan Raven's Munsell matches and the Snyder et al chips (with some of my own Methuen comparison thrown in) AP507A is almost spot on Humbrol 112 Tarmac. You can get 507B from this by adding it to white, until you get a medium blue grey about the tone of Humbrol 27, but a tad richer. You may well ask, why not just use 27 and lump it..... Cheers Mike Cooper (Reading, UK - its a lovely sunny morning, marred only by the fact that I'm in work. Don't let any of your offspring become librarians....) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Mark Sloan Subject: Berry Head I've just received a model from HP Models, the "Berry Head", described by them as a "Truppentransporter". However, H.T. Lenton's book lists it as a Maintenance and Repair Ship for escorts. I'm confused. Can anyone help me discover just what kind of this ship it is? Mark Sloan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: 1/300 Arethusa Hi SMML, There was a post not long ago about a 1/300 Arethusa class cruiser from Lee. Is it a good kit, and who sells it? To respond a bit to the question about the camouflage of the ships, the Penelope and Aurora were both painted in a dark hull & light upperworks pattern in 1941-42, the dark color being (I think) 507A or MS3 and the light color being 507C or MS4A. The Aurora by December 1942 was painted up in a really nice three-color pattern, as shown by a photograph in Douglas Morris' Cruisers of the Royal and Commonwealth Navies. Cheers, Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: Hood Painting Hi again, I don't doubt the Hood was painted in 507B, but the question I have - which is not a new one - is whether her upperworks were painted a slightly lighter color (or shade) than her hull. (I am not suggesting her upperworks were 507C; perhaps just a lighter shade of 507B, which itself was a concoction of 507A and 507C.) It looks that way in the photographs, and also looks that way for the Renown in a photograph of her in 1940-41 when she was also supposedly in 507B. I do not think this effect is caused by the way the light hits the two ships in the photographs. Any thoughts, comments, bombs? Mr. Raven is starting to send me bits and pieces for tests shots, etc. and I had the pleasure of getting a first hand look at what Mr. Lambert has in store for us. Let me say right up front, while I liked the Flowers, they were never a passion of mine, but I am rapidly being converted...There are some of the most incredible up close photos, shots like looking down into the open bridge...all manner of detail photos, more funnel emblems and markings than you can imagine (and I'm sure he'll insist on including every damn one!). I don't need to tell any of you about Johns technical drawing prowess, but let me say that getting all the stuff he has drawn into the book ought to be a challenge. We are still shooting for a fall print date, so stay tuned and if you are planning on building a Flower Corvette, for God's sake don't start it now!
