I should be back on deck within a week or so. Although it is giving me time to catch up on my naval reading :-). Shane via Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Russell Wild" Subject: Airfix Maurey in the UK Hi I'm new to this group, so please bear with me while I get the hang of things! Has anyone here in the UK seen the Airfix 1:600 Mauretania re-issue in MATERIAL form? Or does anyone know an exact date when it will be in? It was supposed to be out in June but we all know what model makers are like with deadlines... S. S. APL-46. I lived aboard her in Japan in 1951 when I was on the Staff of Admiral C. Turner Joy, COMNAVFE. I am curious as to what became of her and also has anyone ever put out a model of an APL? Thanks Jim Ruotsala -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Doremus, Mark" Subject: Sub Stuff Here's one for Tom. I remember the old "show off sub". I don't recall if it was the Revell or the Renwal, I was trying to build back in '67, but the fits (or lack thereof) drove me to tears as a 12 year old. Put me off of ships in general for nearly 35 years. I think I've learned a little since then so, I'm taking on Revell's Lionfish. I know those dimples at the torpedo doors are a flight of fantasy. But were the torpedo doors flush with the hull or did they stand out noticeably? If it had been an East Coast yard, I'd suspect that they used RN-supplied paints (our Royal Navy Set 2 will include an alternate sample of Mountbatten Pink Light supplied by the RN to the USN in 1941). But a West Coast yard where one would not expect to deal with RN ships with any great regularity? I suppose it's possible they may have used stock from WARSPITE's own paint locker, however. If they ran short on that, it would have been easy enough to match colors. John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: USS ENTERPRISE CV-6 Nothing whatever to do with modeling, but I wanted to share a bit of irony. Among my recent used book purchases was a copy of _Warships of the World_, published by Cornell Maritime Press (presumably in 1945 or 1946, since it is the "Victory Edition"). Lots of photos and line drawings, and operational histories of individual units. The write-up on ENTERPRISE concludes: "The ENTERPRISE will be preserved as a national memorial similar to the frigate CONSTITUTION." Had someone only listened! Ten years later Bill Halsey was making broadcast appeals on the TV show "Navy Log" to try to raise one million dollars to save her. We all know what happened.... John Snyder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Don't use Munsell colors guys... Jeff's correct. The current Munsell Book of Color bears only the most superficial resemblance to the 1929 volume (I know, I own both). In fact, you can't match any of the 1929 colors directly to any of the colors in the current volume. The best you would be able to do today would be to send a chip from the 1929 book to Munsell and have them do a custom match for you--and you don't EVEN want to know how much that would cost per color. Be advised also that if you do find a 1929 Munsell Book of Color (there was also a 1942 update to the 1929 book that is OK to use), you'll still have to know how to deal with paint chips that will have yellowed (something we do as a matter of course in our historic preservation business, but that's one trade secret I'm not willing to share). Then too, you may want to let your wife do the matching--remember that color blindness is a male trait. ;^) John Snyder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Kenneth H. Goldman" Subject: USS Constitution Okay you sailing Navy fans, I just found out that the Model Shipways Constitution model is scheduled for October release! I have held off getting the Mamoli kit in anticipation of what should be the definitive model of Old Ironsides. So stop drooling on your workbench and prepare to be satisfied. It seems that the foul lines (red/white dashes) that should be on the side(s) of the landing strip are not included in the Tamiya plans. Does anyone know where these go if I include them? I have decals that will do the trick, I just don't know where they go. A picture would be very helpful, if anyone has one. Have to redo all of the email addresses and favorites. As to Coast Guard Uniforms, they also had a treasury shield on the sleeve right above the cuff.
