Tom, Thanks for the update. I've already filled the forward tubes (the reminder about building up putty comes a little too late) and assumed that sub hulls would be as smooth as possible, but wondered about covering over my handiwork with the .01 doors. I've got a number of references on the doors, I'll trace them out and go that way. More of my question though revolves around the "frog eyes" Revell added to the stern tubes. They might actually represent the correct thickness of the stern but just look wrong. Did you sand them down wholesale or try some other cutting and filling route? Other silly sub questions that might have already been answered: Did the hand lines stay rigged at sea or were they only erected for in port use? Do you sub experts actually drill out all the limber holes? How do you keep the edges sharp when you do it? Did anyone ever figure out the correct color for the Tigerfish (Operation Petticoat)? My goal when I started this project was to model the USS Drum (Battleship Alabama Memorial). OOPS, Drum is a Portsmouth boat, anchor on starboard, Revell did an Electric Boat, anchor to port, and I'm too far along to go back and rework the hull. I think I'm going to get me the Nautilus conversion for my birthday and do the Gato. But if this project doesn't start coming together soon, I may just paint it pink and call it the Tigerfish. As for the gurgling sound, I have to get the electrical modelers to come up with a sound chip to go in the display base. I received yesterday, and finished reading today, Chatham's "The Grand Fleet - Warship Design and Development, 1906-22" by David K Brown. It's a must for anyone interested in British First World War warships, and Part 3 is fascinating on "Wartime Experience and Design". This in particular shows the strength of the proposed 1920's Battleships and Battlecruisers, and indeed gets in a sizeable dig in at the Iowa class for it's comparative lack of progress over these never built marvels. Stephen Rogers" Subject: USS South Dakota When I saw the note on the SoDak in Ms12, I jumped up and down. My search had lent itself to the idea that the SoDak first got her Ms 21 when being repaired after the Kirishima fight, late '42. John can you please send me a copy of this photo...I have the Classic Warships Washington & Kirishima, now I can do that ultimate "Top Gun" display. Just a small matter of cash for the BWN BB57. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: Sub Stuff << But how are you going to reproduce that distinctive gurgling engine as seen and heard in "Operation Petticoat"? Mistress Lorna >> Ahhh, the throaty roar of 4 Fairbanks-Morse diesels with the exhausts partially submerged. Actually, some of the R/C guys in the SubCommittee DO have sound boards on their subs. As impressive as nuclear submarines are, when they pass by, all you hear is the water lapping on the hulls..... Sources are : Marines Magazine N° 17 Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and French Atlantic Harbors during WWII. Hope this helps Jean-Cyrille -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Mistress Lorna Subject: Your first model - Mistress Lorna asks!
