I have used the Model Master neutral grey and the Tamiya neutral grey looks okay, but the Polly S looks a little too light. Any suggestions? Cheers Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: FSM looking for ship articles While I was at the Nationals the new editor for Fine Scale Modeler came up and introduced himself. After some small talk we talked about FSM and writing ship related articles. According to what he told me, FSM is looking for ship model articles. Especially ones about building some of the big resin models. So, if you want your moment of fame in the pages of FSM, they are looking for ship related articles. Call FSM first and talk directly to Terry. He'll give you a yay or nay on the idea right then and there. I have not heard about any of these changes as of yet. As far as I am concerned I WILL Judge the same as last year, because they will not tell me until the day so thats tough on them. Hi Graham, According to "Australian & New Zealand Warships 1914-45" by Ross Gillett, Swan's pennant number is L74(1939) & then U74(1940) Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "graham walker" Subject: Colours Hi everyone how about putting down our paint mixes to the S&S paint chips, sure would make life a bit easier. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: New subscriber Ed Arnold wrote: >> Please accept my subscription to SMML, my main interest is WW2 German and U.S. submarines of all eras. << A fellow Connecticut resident, fellow SubCommittee member and fine submarine modeller. The advantage to this book, as the title suggests, is that the focus is BB-63. The book by Sumrall goes into more details on the various components of the Iowa design. Good diagrams of radars (Fire control and Search), guns, construction, plus several line drawing of all the Iowas are included. Sumrall's book really gives a more nuts and bolts of the design aspects of the entire class while Stilwell looks more at the living, breathing parts of the ship(with wonderful photos to boot). Both are excellent references, but Stilwell may be better for your project. Incidentally, how would you rate the Plan Book from the Floating Drydock? I'm planning a BB-63 myself in the near future and am contemplating purchasing that reference. Rusty: When using your realistic teakwood deck painting method, do you first paint a coat of color 1 on the deck and then apply the crepe tape and subsequent colors (2 and 3)? I think that was implied in your article but I just wanted to make sure I was reading the procedure correctly. How's this method coming on the Hornet? Thanks in advance. Thom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Re: MS 21 Hi Folks, I was just about to ask a question about horizontal surfaces and MS 21 and I see that John Synder answered the question. I am just looking for confirmation/clarification about what gets painted 20-B Deck Blue. Does this include the tops depth charges and the D/C racks and throwers, the tops of any lockers and small housing on the deck, the top of the funnel, the canvas cover of the boat, the tops of open guns (e.g. 3 in, 20mm, 40mm). I am working on the Iron Shipwright 1/350 scale (yes, you read it correctly) PC Partrol Ship and it will be in MS 21. This is my first resin kit and it will be the subject of an article that will appear in Warship. Since it is not a box scale kit steel navy ship, it doesn't fit IMM's parameters, so I am branching out a bit. I am using the new Badger Modelflex paints which will be the subject of a review for IMM in the next update. Thanks, Felix Bustelo Webmaster International Maritime Modeling http://members.tripod.com/~Febus65/imm.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "James M. Pasquill, II" Subject: Mystery ship >> I downloaded your picture and ran it through the photo-editor on my computer. It definitely looks like a Grimsby or early Black Swan class sloop, with mountings in A, B and X positions, a raked funnel with the top parallel to the deck, and a single bandstand abaft the funnel. There is also a pennant number under A mounting, and by squinting heavily, standing on my head, and a few other tricks, I reckon it is either U73 or U74. The former is HMAS Warrego, the latter HMAS Swan, both Australian Grimsby class sloops. There is a photo on page 57 of Arnold Hague's book Sloops 1926-1946 (World Ship Society, 1993), which shows Warrego in exactly the same disruptive scheme as your mystery photo, so I would suspect that is your ship. Warrego also had minesweeping equipment on her quarterdeck, and your photo seems to show something like that in the correct place. << The above seems to be about as definitive an answer as you will get (until the next definitive answer comes along). This whole exercise has a humorous side to me. I was thinking that I am very glad we are not a group of officers trying to decide whether or not to fire on this ship...;^) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "foeth" Subject: Yamato/Musashi Not that I am planning to build one in the future, but I have as of yet not found any differences between the two ships. I don't mean the extra 25mm mounts for the Ten Ichi Go manoeuvre, or the extra tripple secondary turrets amidships, but other differences, small things in the bridge structure, slightly different mast etc. Are there any, or are they alike to the smallest detail? And are there references on Musashi? I have found some Yamato references (Skulski, some 1:100 drawings etc) but the Musashi material seems to be even rarer. I once spoke to an employee at a dutch naval research center, who was in Japan a few years ago for a conference, and found a book in Japanese on the Yamato's, with, as he put it, many more pictures than he had previously seen, far more than the usual pics of her. He did not buy this book (slightly expensive). Does anyone know of such a publication? It always seemed a bit odd to me that so little of these ships has survived the war, and I doubt if the Japanese really burned all the material they had on these ships. One more question, are there *good* references on the Shinano? I thought it might be fun to take a Tamiya 1/350 hull and scrap away, some day. I do not mean the Garzke and Dulin drawings, but something slightly more substantial. Foeth I'm not boring, I'm interestingly challenged. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Lundrigan, Patrick" Subject: Re: Midway >> Does anyone know of any books covering this? Did anyone get tried post war for this? What results from the trial? << I think this was in _Miracle at Midway_. IIRC, the interrogating officer is unnamed. Also, I think that there were no volunteers to perform the execution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: "Aylin Kececi" Subject: Ward and Bainbridge and Nurton I am planning to build USS Ward and USS Bainbridge by Iron Shipwrights/Commander Models in 1/350. I am looking for build up features for both kits. I found one for Bainbridge but it doesn't have any info on painting. I don't have any references (what I have is restricted to WWII IJN and some Squadron books). I have difficulties in obtaining references and don't know what to look for. My other concern is that I couldn't find these kits on the product listing of the manufacturer. Are they out of production or aren't added to the list yet (on their web site)? WEM Nurton is also on the building list. I am looking for a build-up and reference for it, too. I don't know anything about painting measures and color codes. If anyone is interested in the copy I have available, contact me at mailto:Lawman555@aol.com . I also was wondering how would anyone commission a plastic model that is no longer produced? I was specifically interested in a WWII Submarine Chaser. Glencoe had made a WWI model; but I understand that it was discontinued about 16 years ago. Is there any information available on how to cast your own plastic hulls, etc? I seem to remember some information on that; but do not remember where. Thanks ahead of time.
