On occasion I've had it frost on me, due I think to improper thinning ratio, but I've found that another coat or so of slightly less thinned dullcoat makes the frost dissapear....hope ya didn't throw away the frosted boat without tryin that first..... Problem is, it wants a lot more memory and speed than my old PC has. It also comes with a photo editor program that you may not need. For about half the price, Kodak also sells photo diskettes that just come with the jpeg images and no photo editor. Either way it's great to have the photos in an electronic format. I've been able to share my work with others and amaze others with photos of their models from local shows. One guy was using my photo as a PC wallpaper:^) In the US, many drug and discount stores now have a Kodak photo center that has a scanner where you can enlarge, copy or scan photos. Cost for duplicating is modest, 8x10 sheet costs around $7.00. I don't know about cost to scan. The difference between carrying 35 aircraft or 60 aircraft in the hanger relies on the volume available. It has nothing to do with the ship's displacement. Think about it, the weight difference of 30 extra planes is tiny compared to the total ship tonnage. The early Illustrious class ships could carry only approx. 35 aircraft due to the limited volume of the hanger. This limited volume was due to the choice to use an armored flightdeck. The number of aircraft was listed as 60 by all the British publications though, to conceal the fact that there was such a thick armored flight deck. Anyone looking at a carrier of that size with a hanger only large enough to fit 35 planes would have been able to figure out why this the case. Pretty sneaky on the part of the British. Being able to carry 60 aircraft was achieved in part by the technique of parking some the planes along the edge as described previously. But these planes were always on the deck. They couldn't put all the planes in the hanger at once. The USN did not see this as an issue and were parking their planes on the deck as well as in the hanger very early on(hence the very large a/c complements of the US carriers). The British and IJN wanted to be able to store all the planes in the hanger, and didn't adopt the deck park as early as the USN. The models look very well done by the photographs. As they can't do overseas shipping right now, maybe HobbyLink Japan could start to carry their products? I like because it thins enamel as well as lacquer based paints with no problems. Of course it would make a mess of acrylics. Is there any books that deal with the various FC directors that I could get a hold of? Thanks for your help Bruce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Richa5011@aol.com Subject: Ft. Drum Hello all, I am looking for a source of photos of Ft. Drum, Manila Bay...which looks something like the stern-third of a battleship I recently acquired one of the Classic Warship kits and am looking for some images to help put things in perspective. Any ideas? Nat Richards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "David Hathaway" Subject: Semtex hints If you could use Humbrol paint as Semtex a lot of terrorist groups would buy out most model shops stocks! David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: County class cruiser Hi Cliff The cruiser isn't Kent, she didn't carry a hanger. It's unlikely to be Cornwall which I think was in the Indian Ocean or South Atlantic at the time so that seems to leave Berwick which had several different camouflage schemes. The destroyer I would need to see the picture before hazarding a guess. Can you scan these (I know it might be a bit difficult given the location)? Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: IJN Kongo Hi all I've reached the stage where I need to know the AA arrangement for the single 25mm for my model of the Kongo. All I've got is the old Profile plan which shows two lines of seven on the quartedeck and 2 pairs on the foredeck just behind B turret. Can anyone confirm whether this is the right arrangement. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Jens H. Brandal" Subject: Flat varnish I do wish to add to Colin's recommendation - the Aeromaster acrylic clear varnishes are really excellent. I have only tried the flat and semi-gloss ones. I'm too lazy to thin it with distilled water - I just shake the bottle, and pour it straight into the cup. It sprays really well even through the XF nozzle of my Badger 150. It dries fast, and during long spraying sessions, dried varnish will build up on the tip of the needle. For this reason, I probably would not use it to create thin, feathered edges on camouflage finishes. If you apply too much, it will look slightly bluish white, but it will dry clear and does not cause a sepia tone to pale colours. Try it - I'm sure you'll love it. Jens -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "John Rule" Subject: Ship Passenger Lists To Jeff Herne regarding your request on ship passenger lists. I don't know if it will help but try the following site which is part of Cyndy's List which is an amazing genealogical tool. Keith Reed" Subject: HMCS Protecteur Folks, I have arranged for my film developer to post pictures of HMCS Protecteur AOR 509 taken during a Day Sail on September 13th when her crew received 10 days notice for deployment with the UN force for East Timor. Activities included a Refuelling At Sea (RAS) of HMCS Ottawa, Search And Rescue exercises with a Sea King (SAR) and HMCS Huron. There are also photos of RCN auxiliary vessels, HMCShips Algonquin, Calgary, Regina and Winnipeg at CFB Esquimalt (on Vancouver Island near Victoria, British Columbia). If you want you may download the pictures for your own use. There is no description. I think that most of the shots are self-explanatory. The pictures are in display format 75 dpi. Suitable for viewing but not for printing. The Web site is http://www.ldphotostation.com The IDs for the pictures are (not case sensitive) NB2JRVJ2LR and BP9BWW7U4N Hope you enjoy. The book is £12 or thereabouts in our local model shop, but perhaps Amazon can supply it cheaper. If you were building such a model, the book would be worth it just for the one picture, let alone all the other aircraft stuff!! Tim Perry Bristol, UK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Ship model trading. Hi All; The recent suggestion to use Figuretrades@OneList.com was for the smaller wargame ship models, not for the 1:700 and larger wooden / injection / resin ships. We have some overlap in scale but there are 2 distinct model types here. The static ( or R/C ) ships are much more detailed. The "wargame" ships are less detailed and sturdier to stand up to handling. The slight overlap comes in when some wargamers use the 1:700 or 1:600 injection molded ships for wargaming, and some people take these scales, and 1:1200/1250 models and detail them for static models. I was aware of the "Cody" site, just didn`t want to fill it up with wargame ships. I overlap somewhat myself. I`m primarily a wargamer. But I have 2 injection molded, and 1 wooden, ship kits for static models. And I am going to use 2-3 of the PT Dockyard resin wargame models to detail for a diorama. On the other hand I`m looking for an Airfix EXETER to build as a wargame model, as well as some of the 1:600 Airfix destroyers.
