Thanks for the help Shalom Mor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: ECammeron@aol.com Subject: Re: CV with a "Z" In about July 1945, Commander, Task Force 38 had assigned Letter Codes to each carrier in the force to replace the confusing, hard to describe geometric symbols previously used. SHANGRI-LA was assigned 'Z'. Putting the aircraft tail letter code on the flight deck was evidently a decision by the ship's captain. Duane Fowler produces the decal flags you need. BTW, I just got a TON of new flag decals from Duane (Alps printer) Fowler for review in Ships and Tips. These flags are absolutely exquisite in detail and color. The detail and design is very meticulous and should be absolutely excellent on almost any scale model. He sent me samples of naval ensigns and jacks of Europe and certain other countries since 1900. The countries included are: Europe (modern) The USSR and CIS Republics (modern and historic) Germany since 1900 Russian and USSR since 1900 Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada (modern) WW2 Axis and Allied nations Each set contains five sizes of each flag and jack and are described in the instruction sheets that accompany each. Contact Duane directly for more info on the flags (he's a member of this list) dlfowler@uscg.net. I hope to send a review to the Warship site along with scans of the flags very soon. The Z on her flight deck is her airgroup identifying letter and if you look closely you can also see it on the aircraft themselves. Letters replaced geometrical symbols about July '45 I think as the symbols were considered difficult to recognise. Shangri-La's used to be a lightning bolt. Anyway the Z is there to help pilots identify which aircraft carrier it is. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: 2pdrs Hi James The designation refers to the weight of the whole shell. The actual bore of the 2pdr was 40mm. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: Warspite Swordfish Hi Rick I think the Swordfish was in standard colours for the time (overall silver dope). Can't locate the identity offhand but she did carry anti-submarine bombs (and sink the U64) and did receive damage to her tail from AA fire. Crew were Pilot PO F C Rice, Observer Lieutenant Commander W L M Brown RN and Air-gunner M G Pacey. If no-one comes up with her identity I'll see what I can do. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "cpalfreeman" Subject: Re: Revell Fl****r Class Corvette Yes Mark, it has been re-released. I picked mine up in Plastic Pastimes in Poole this afternoon. They're priced at 40 GBP each, and they come in an awfully big box for something in 1/72. On first look there are loads of bits, and the kit icludes transparent components (Yeah - in a ship model !) as well as metal anchor chain, yarn for rigging, and lots of smallish diameter plastic rod for railings. The hull is in four pieces and shows the rivetted plates rather heavily. The level of detail isn't brilliant as far as I can see, and although pint schemes for Snowberry and Saucy are outlined, it should be possible to make any of a number of variants. To address the inadequacies such as they are, sometime soonish there will be a kit of bits on the market from David Parkins. Check out the details on: http://www.djparkins.clara.net/ From the descriptions of the stuff they're going to produce I've decided not to start building until they're available and I've got hold of the recent book. I understand from a chap at their stand at Yeovilton a few weeks ago that release is fairly imminent. There is a strong temptation to build one with the WEM version in 1/700 on the davits. Charles Palfreeman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Roland Mar Subject: Re: Russian ship NORWICH To: Derek Wakefield I can't find [which mind you doesn't mean that it didn't exist] anything approximating "NORWICH" in either the Tsarist or Soviet fleet, even as the old name of something transferred as lend-lease. However, there is the NOVIK which is a destroyer name in Russia. There was a WW I NOVIK class of DD's under the Tsar. In the post-Revolution, pre-WW II era there was IIRC a NOVIK that was an experimental high speed DD trials ship for engines in the the unit configuration. Hope this helps. Nein! Hi Mark, I'm sure you'll get a million messages on this one. I have a picture of Konig's sister Kronprinz in "The Battle of Jutland" by Geoffrey Bennett which shows (unambiguously) two guns each in A and B turrets. You can't tell on the other three. Every reference I've ever seen lists her carrying 10 X 12", which is hard to get with all triples. The plan in Breyer's "Battleships and Battlecruisers" shows five double-gunned turrets. It's kind of an old book - early seventies, I think - but on the other hand the guy is German, so he probably got it right. My conclusion: you may have a real collector's item on your hands. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Duane Fowler Subject: Royal Navy Signal Flag Decals Hello Dimi, Toms Modelworks has the Royal Signal Flags and Pennants (1934 to 1948) in 1/700 and 1/350 scale. He also has a Nato set in the same scales. The only difference between the two is the numerical flags (the numerical pennants are identical). The Royal Navy adopted the US numerical flags in 1949. In the future a set with the Japanese WWII signal flags and pennants will be available (again, the numerical flags are different) as well as a Russian/Soviet set. This set will be completely different since it will include the Cyrillic character flags. The book shows the wakes left in the water for all major classes of IJN ships if you want to model the ships in water. D. The book shows INAF planes with painting guides. E. The book has excellent line drawings of important IJN ship fittings. My copy cost me all of $10.98!!! What a bargain!!! Regards, RhinoBones -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "David Mullins" Subject: Re: Model Master Acrylics Hi all! Tom Dean's post on 04/01/00 hit close to home. When airbrushing acrylics, you MUST avoid contact of the acrylic paint with any solvents used to clean up regular model paints (enamels). I clean up with lacquer thinner (solvent), then blow air through the gun to clear it out. No matter how thorough you are, a trace of the solvent remains. Upon contact with this solvent residue, acrylics gel up and clog the tip. Tom's 30 seconds is average. My local shop verified this with Testors. Two solutions are possible: 1). Buy an extra set of tips to be used ONLY with acrylics (what I did). 2). If you use only one set of tips, after you clean with solvent, blow down with air and then spray LOTS of denatured alcohol through the gun to flush out the solvent residue. CAUTION: this will create an explosive vapor cloud >> do it outdoors AND away from any ignition source. An addenda from my local shop owner: not to far in the future, solvent model paints will be gone & acrylics will be the only paints available. Change is good?? ... the debate goes onward. Also, when painting brass parts, you will get a better primer coat bond by dipping the part in "blackner" or soaking it in white vinegar for 15 min. and rinsing with lots of distilled water. Both methods gently etch the surface. Hope this helps! David Mullins Amarillo, TX. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22) From: Tim Stoneman Subject: Re: Second Battle of Narvik - Swordfish The serial number of the aircraft Bolt and Rice used for the famous sortie during the battle was L9767. My guess (because I don't know of a photo, although I have seen one (from another contributor to this list) of another of WARSPITE's aircraft at Alexandria shortly afterwards) is that the scheme would have had dark sea grey/dark slate grey uppersurfaces with sky grey undersurfaces, up to halfway up the fuselage. Type A1 roundels on the fuselage and Type B above the wings, red/white/blue fin stripes (covering the whole fin) and probably with the codes (C8A (?)) obliterated as they were 701 Sqn's and the ship's flight became part of 700 Sqn before the battle. Can anyone help. Does anybody have or know of drawings of the Australian Collins class submarine? Cheers Simon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 27) From: "James Kloek" Subject: Color Matching John is right on the money with the differences between inks and paints. The other thing to keep in mind is that our perception of color depends on the wavelengths and intensity of light hitting our eyeballs. That depends not only the subject we are looking at, but also on the kind of light that is illuminating it, and the general conditions under which the viewing takes place. Paint chips look different depending on whether you look at them in sunlight, under a tungsten bulb, or a florescent tube. It also depends on whether you are in bright surroundings or dim surroundings. I won't go way off topic, but color slide flims are built very differently from color print films, because they are meant to be viewed in a dark room, and you need to do different things to make the colors look "right" under those conditions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 28) From: "Bruce D. Wright" Subject: Guns Hi Guys: Just wanted to reply to James Johnsons's question in Vol. 868. Yes, the "pounder" reference does refer to the weight of the projectile of the particular gun. A 2# is a 40mm bore, the 6# is 57mm, the 12# is a 3 inch gun (in the USN it's 13#) and the 25# (based on the British Army gun) is a 3.7" gun. Until the advent of breech loading guns (and even until the post WWII era), light guns were refered to by this means. I don't know why.
