He had served aboard her from 66-68 and has a cruise book of the Med and North Atlantic cruises during 67. The book, along with another smaller, loosly bound photo book, provided me with all the reference needed to build and mark the model. I still ogle the book when I go to mom and dads for the day, and my son really eats it up. << Robert, guard that book with your life............ A few years ago, I carelessly stored a box of books in a storage unit right outside my home. In the box was my late grandpa's '43-'45 Essex cruisebook, "Saga of the Essex". The storage was meant to be temporary since I was away at college. When I came home to move some of these boxes to a safer environment, I found that the storage area had suffered a small bit of flooding. Nothing too major. This was enough, however, to cause the old book to absorb all the moisture in the air, and caused all the pages to basically turn into glue. My heart sank as I pulled the moldy copy of one of my most precious heirlooms out of its box, and tried to convince myself that it was salvageable. It was not, and I still to this day I can't forgive myself for this inexcusable blunder. I lost probably the most irreplaceable item I had. Living in Seattle, I should have known better....... Take care, Quinn Bracken -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Sean Obrien" Subject: Arizona launch and small boat colors I'm a new member to this list-serve. After 20 years of neglect, I've decided to try modeling again. My first choice is the Revell Arizona, one I fondly remember building as a kid. My question is this: after looking at many drawings, b+w photos, and other modelers' depictions, what color are the motor launches and small boats above and below the waterline on a mid 30's Arizona? The kit says white, but other references seem to indicate otherwise. Anybody able to help? Thanks, Sean O'Brien -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: CBNJBB62@aol.com Subject: Queen Mary 2 & Titanic 2 Hi Guys Does anyone know where the new Queen Mary 2 ocean liner is being built? Supposedly it will be able to carry 2,800 passengers which makes me think it's got to be bigger than a Nimitz class carrier, any one heard anything? Butler speed While checking the Butler's top speed in Floating Drydocks Warships Data Special on DE's, I found something I hadn't noticed before. The book has, under each class's general information something called "Trail Speed". I thought it may be a typo on the Butler page, but it is the same for all the classes. Is this a typo for Trial speed? I never heard of trail speed. Is it another way of saying top speed? In any case, the "trail speed" for the Butler's is listed as 24.15 knots. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: John Anderson Subject: C-130 landing Ship was the Forest Fire USS Forestall C-130 landed on her with empty flight deck to test to idea of high transport volume aircraft, while the test was a success they did not engage the program john -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Joe Costanzo" Subject: Re: Big planes landing on carriers Rusty, Here's a picture of a C-130 landing on the USS Forestall: http://www.uss-salem.org/navhist/carriers/images/odd/odd22.jpg But that's nothing... here's a shot of a C-17 (no typo) landing on an LHD! http://www.uss-salem.org/navhist/carriers/images/odd/odd55.jpg I assume the picture is genuine, unless someone else knows otherwise Joe Costanzo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Mike Connelley Subject: CGI Battleship Overlays Howdy: It makes a lot of sense (logistically and financially) to use CGI battleships instead of large models. But one thing struck me. They're planning to lay the images of the battleships over the little destroyers. But the Missouri is right in the background and is a heck of a lot bigger than anything that was on battleship row. She's bigger in very way...she's longer, broader, and taller. You can't hide a Iowa class BB behind a few little destroyers...it just don't work like that. I wonder how the the ILM folks are going to handle that! Gee, for 11 yrs old, he's asking some pretty darned good questions. Hey, SECNAV, can you answer that?? << Well at that Star Wars Episode I movie Ja-Ja-Binks' army was lined up in battle order to await the Imperial army while they unloaded their tightly packed battle droids. Pretty impressive graphics and a lesson in packaging machinery. But my friend's six year old nephew saw though the ridiculousness of that maneuver. "Shoot. Shoot. Don't wait. Shoot first. Aw." Hey, this kid's got it. Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: PH movie aircraft A friend who lives in HI. went to Ford Is. yesterday to look at the aircraft they shipped in for this film. He said they had Zeros and P-40's, all mock-ups but looked very real. He noticed that they all had two hoses hanging down from the belly. What he found out from the crew was that they hook up hydraulic lines to these to make the props turn and other things work. So this the only news he had for me but I will share more as soon as he calls with it. Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Russian icebreaker kit While looking through a new home away from home (hobby store) I came across a kit of a Russian nuke icebreaker in 1:400. Couldn't read the label and the box was very crude. Even the card board box itself was bad as in very thin and the top and bottom didn't really match that well. So I asked the clerk about it. his reply was I should like it and don't let the box fool me. So $16 latter, Once in the car I had to rip it open only to find a kit that was just as good as one of Revells better kits but not as good as a Tamiya. I was really expecting something less then Linburg or Glencoe but it was well worth $16. The pieces all go together well and with some GMM photoetch she'll look pretty good. Now the deal with this model company I'm told is that they are made in the former defense plants that use to make injection modeled parts for aircraft and other military goodies. These people are skilled at this kind of work so that's why their kits are this of quality. I will see if they can find more of these kits, I'm sure they have more then an icebreaker. Keith Hi Keith, Ummm, that sounds like it could be the Lenin Icebreaker from Heller, just repackaged. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: Re: Essex Cruise Book First off, just because I'm posting this doesn't mean I agree with it. I read through Lehman's book (which I can't remember the title of) about "why the USN didn't need anything but supercarriers" (among other things) back in the early 80s. The basic gist of the argument was it wasn't cost effective for the USN to operate smaller Essex/Midway size carriers. His rational was that nearly all the aircraft in service (or entering service) at that time couldn't be operated from the smaller ships, and the comparative cost of operating a conventional mid-size carrier vs the capability of the aircraft it could operate, wasn't all that much cheaper than the cost of operating a Nimitz cl ship. Comparatively, there's was a very interesting proposal made in (I believe) the forward of JFS 70-71. The author commented on the decilne of carriers in smaller navies. He suggested the formation of what he called the Greater Atlantic Treaty Organization (GATO) in which the major powers provided assistance to smaller navies in mantaining their smaller carriers instead of letting them go to the breakers, so the western powers could sustain a credible ASW carrier force in the Atlantic. Yeah, had a snowball's chance in hades of ever happening, but it was an interesting idea.
