Chris... the USSR wasn't an evil empire? You should peruse a book called The Black Book of Communism...review provided at: http://www.aobs-store.com/reviews/black_book.htm . Tell me it wasn't evil...I've still got that USS Arizona for sale.... And if that's humor.... it's no wonder the Empire collapsed. Back on topic: Does anybody know of an online source for surgical suture material for rigging? Chris Crofoot -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Pieter Cornelissen Subject: Radetsky's railings I have received my example of NNT's Radetsky this weekend. It is a really nice kit, very sharp and thin resin castings castings (on small wafers of resin), hull shape right according to my only set of drawings (the drawings in John Bowen's Scale model warships) and the essential minimum in photo-etch fittings. On the downside, the model has the raised windows (fixed with a scalpel blade in about ten minutes) in the style of HP models and there is very strange material supplied for the torpedo nets. These will have to be replaced with some other material. The funnels have no 'rings' around them, so these will also have to be scratchbuilt. As the model has no railings WEM suggested using their 3 bar railings. The photograph of the ship on their website also shows 3 bar railing. The drawing in the Bowen book suggests 2 bar railing, however. Does anyone know which one is right? Pieter Cornelissen Delft, The Netherlands Oh, I almost forgot. WSW has also recently produced a Radetsky. Could anyone post a mini-review of this on SMML? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Kurt Van Dahm Subject: Badger Paints In Scottie Dayton’s “Soundings” article in the May/June 2000 issue of Ships In Scale magazine Scottie mistakenly reports that Badger’s Modelflex Marine Paint line was discontinued on 12-29-99. This is not true. The Modelflex Marine Paint line is in production and is available. As Badger’s Marine Consultant and developer of the Marine Paints let me assure everybody that the paints have not been discontinued. I only just passed on the Graf Spee, but my friend jumped all over Prinz Eugen. I didn't get the proprietor's name, but I believe he did all right for himself even tho' is was an armor modeller's deal << Yes, it was Ted Paris, he told me he didn't bring too many ships because it was an armor show but I did see a lot of guys that were interested in "ships". Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Luke Andersen" Subject: Landing Carrier Support, Large (LCS(L)) The LCS (L), mighty midgets, were in service from 1944-1946. My grandfather was on the LCS #55 (there were 130 such ships constructed) during WWII and I'd like to find a model on his ship. Can anyone help me find a company that made/makes a model of the LCS(L)? thanks Luke -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Robert Mosher" Subject: Moskva - A lively pile of scrap! The Moskva recently sailed out of the repair yard to join the Russian Black Seas fleet on exercises. Robert M -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Landing Craft Infantry (Large) Hi Can anyone out there direct me towards plans for the Landing Craft Infantry (Large), built in the US during WWII? I intend building one to 1/76 scale and only have rather small plans gleaned from various sources. There must be some makers plans about somewhere. Thanks for your efforts in advance. Dan Taylor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "philip long" Subject: 1/600 musashi I am expecting delivery in the next few days of the 1/600 ARII Musashi and I wondered if anyone has built this kit ,what they thought of it and any tips on work to be done on it I would also like to know from any Yamaholics out there if there is any good web sites to visiton this beast! thanks phil -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Millen, Alan R." Subject: Kriegsmarine Catapult Ships & Flowers Coming out of hiding to query the list in general, and Mr. Pletscher in particular, regarding a couple of recent threads. Are there any photographs or data concerning the Blohm und Voss Bv138s carried aboard the catapult ships Sperber, Falke, Bussard, Westfalen, Schwabenland, or Friesenland? I know, I know, AAA targets, but they DO float! In particular, I'm looking for the Werknummern, Stammkennzeichen, and shipboard assignments of the planes. That is, the serial number and 4-character code carried on the side of the plane. The Schiffer book on the Bv138 only has head-on views of the planes, nothing to see in the way of codes. Also looking for shots of the catapults with an eye towards scratching. Secondly, there was a thread on Flower class corvettes used by the Kriegsmarine. Any available pictures of these? Might be a good use of my Matchbox Flower. Many thanks for all the enjoyable reading! Alan R. Millen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Marc Flake Subject: Re: Seals-Models MIKASA Okay, 3800 yen, that's a little more than $36 USD. I'm in. Mitsuaki, how can we get a hold of this? Bill (Gruner)! Are you going to try to carry this? I just checked HobbyLink Japan, not there. I want this kit! I want it more than the Koenig. No joke. Marc -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "feed" Subject: Re: exocet+korean airliner I promise I'll never post anything related to Korean airliners again. the thread went too far. Peeling someones skins off. I just wanted to establish a relationship between exocet recognition by HMS Sheffield and Korean Airliner by who knows who. Sorry If I started Third World War (Just kidding Chilean spicy humor) Hi "FeeD" Don't worry mate - no harm done ;-). Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "jmaze" Subject: Thanks and Assorted Q's SMMLies, First, thanks to all who responded on and off list to my questions about Emden/Dresden, Konig, cagemasts, and Samek kits (Bill G, I hope to order one soon). Second, is the Pit Road (P&I?) LPH kit still available? Any of the retailers who frequent here have it? I saw the the Blue Ridge on HLJ, but no LPH's. Silly question...how hard would it be to convert the LCC to an LPH? The basic hull should be the same, but looking at the couple pics I had quick access to, there are some significant differences there to. Did I see a set of plans listed somewhere? Third, just received a mailing from Telebuch; they are listing "Panzerschiffe um 1900" by U. Israel and ??? (don't remember, don't feel like going after the flyer right now). Anybody have this? Is there an English version? Is it worthwhile to have the German version if you can't *read* German? JohnM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Jana & Pavel" Subject: Correction Hi Everyone, To the guy who tore a strip off me for incorrectly saying the "New Jersey Class", I stand corrected. Quite right the class was and is known as the Iowa Class. That will teach me to write e-mails at am ...... Regards Pavel Head hung in shame...... Hi Pavel, Don't worry mate, happens all the time - just ask Mike Dunn about "Type 12s" ;-þ. Shane - who's been known to get things wrong quite a number of times. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Keith Butterley Subject: Ship visits Hi group, I was watching the local news on Sunday and as they broke to commercial the showed the view from the harbour cam and lo and behold I could have swore I was looking at a great hunk of USN hardware in the guise of a carrier. I didn't even know one was visiting, which brings me to my question: Is there someplace on the web one can check to see what warships are visiting what cities? At least this way I could find out in advance and plan ahead to make sure I could get down to see whatever is in town. Thanks. Keith Butterley Vancouver Canada PS Anybody else from the rain forest going to SMMLcon? Hi Keith, Well since some papers used to carry "Harbour Reports", you may want to try them first online & off. I'd also say that the Official Navy sites for each country could have pages for reporting visiting naval ships. Failing that, check on the web for harbour authorities & see if they have a "movements" schedule, that would come in handy across the board. HTH, Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: USS Arizona Perhaps some of you already know of this, but I stumbled upon a plan of what the Arizona looks like now. It's a pretty awe inspiring site. Due to the magazine explosion, the forward turrets look as if they're sitting in a well deck. http://www.nps.gov/scru/arizona.html The plan is a 500K gif, so be advised it might take a few minutes to load (I'm working at 14.4, so it took an eternity). Go Navy! _|_o_|_ Derek "Tiger" (/\)akefield /---(.](o)[.)---\ iscandar@chatter.com o oo O oo o http://www.iscandar-66.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: Armor on current ships Hi; In a number of wargame sources there is mention of Kevlar armor on some US ships. As anal retentive as some wargamers are about detail I would suspect that there is some. I don`t know where or which ships. Chuck Duggie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "JAmes McCormick" Subject: USS Pegasus PHM-1 Hello! Can anyone give me some advice as to how to go about getting a set of plans for USS Pegasus(PHM-1). She was built in 1978, and I think she was sold for scrap in about 1992. I seem to recall a web page for some fellow who actually bought one of the 5 other ships, and was going to get her up and running(and they say modelers are screwy!) Any and all info is appreciated. The plans are to be sent to a 3rd party for a possible 350th scale kit, but no promises yet. I just can't settle for that itty bitty 700th skywave kit. Thanks in advance!!!! Jim McCormick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Cataldo Torelli Subject: Naval Simulator Hi SMMLiers, I'm looking for naval simulators for PC's, WWII era if it's possible. Any hints about this ? Thanks in advance, Cataldo Torelli. Madrid, Spain. Hi Cataldo, SSI have a good game our called iirc "Fighting Steel". Several SMMLies were raving about last year when it came out. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: Joseph Poutre Subject: (West) German ship colors Can anyone give me a good color match for ships of the Deutsche Marine, circa 1980-1985? Some photos look "standard" navy gray, but others seem to have a slight greenish tint to them. Not as strong as Canadian vessels, just a hint. Thanks! This is one of the best new plastic kits in 1/700 scale to come from other than one of the major 1/700 producers, and compares favorably with Skywave in quality. We'll be ordering a large quantity of them this week, and hope to have a shipment by late April or early May, assuming that Sealsmodel has put them into full-scale production. Japanese price is 3800 yen. We haven't determined our list price yet, but it will be announced at least by the time our new April UPDATE is published. We will be having a large inventory disposal sale to reduce stock, so watch our website, and the WARSHIP website, for the UPDATE, which should be posted by next Wednesday. It will be mailed early next week.
