She was cut to the main deck with the fwd. gun still in place. I don't know if it was the Belknap, couldn't see the painted out name or make out the #. There was a Knox class cut to the deck also. She was in drydock and it looked as if she was having a major autospy. They have begun to dismantle the mast of the America CV 66. << The Belknaps didn't have a forward gun. Do you mean Missile Launcher or maybe the angled deck house behind it? Anyway, I'm not sure whether Belknap herslef was at Philly (my sources are all at home), but I know Wainwright was there and possibly Josephus Daniels. I suspect that the poor girl you saw was Wainwright. Reich", no codes visible. In Bley's "Deutschland zur Luft", there is an overhead view (prewar, with a Dornier Wal on board) of a Katapultschiff, taken from long distance, so it will be useful for general placement of the catapult only. Another prewar foto taken on board Europa shows a plane being catapulted off, but it's not a Bv 138, and only the front part of the catapult is visible. I can not scan the fotos, but if you are interested I will send copies by snailmail. The current Black Sea's Fleet flagship MOSKVA is described as a Rocket-Artillery Shipe (Proyekt 1164) from 1983 previously named GOLOVKO. Ooops - should never trust the English translation of a Russian news story - its hard enough to get it right in Russian! Robert M -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Darren Scannell Subject: Re: Moskva A year or 2 ago there were some photos on the net of the Moskva (the Helicopter Rocket Cruiser with the wide load sign on it's rear) being towed to the scrappers in Asia somewhere. (Singapore, maybe) I have been unable to locate the photos again, but it has definitely been scrapped. He was in pretty poor condition and did not look like any amount of capital could resurrect him. The Slava class ship Moskva was so named in 1995. Darren Scannell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Mike Connelley Subject: USS Constellation Howdy: Does anyone out there in SMML land know where I can find a few photos of the Connie (CV-64) during Vietnam or around that time period, or for America or Kitty Hawk? I want to build the Constellation during that time and want to know what was there and what wasn't and some painting info; not so much for a super-duper detailed kit but just for backdating the 1/720 Italeri kit (don't worry Duane, the Missouri is on track and I *PROMISE* this won't take long...out of the box with the GMM etched set...and maybe I'll put in a sparse hangar deck...but that's it really!). Cheers Mike Connelley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "scola" Subject: USS McMuir This doesn't have anything to do with modeling, but maybe someone can help. I am looking for a web site or information on troop transport ships. The ship I am looking for is the US or USS McMuir. This ship brought my parents over from Germany and I would like to incorporate some facts and photos for their 50th wedding anniversary. The ship sailed from Bremerhafen Germany sometime in December 1950 and arrvied NYC 1-1-51. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "John Sheridan" Subject: Re: USN S-Boat Camouflage >> Anyone know which camo scheme or schemes were used on S-type submarines that were serving with the USN in 1942? << Most of the S-Class spent the war wearing MS 9 (Solid Black) camouflage. Sub schemes later went to measure 10 gray on the superstructure, with black hull and decks, and the 32S, with light gray, dark gray and black blended. None of the sugar boats served long enough in the war to get later schemes. They were (thankfully) withdrawn from service as too obsolete for the rigors of the Pacific war. Tom Dougherty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: peter samolinski Subject: Koenig & Rigging Fibre Well, gang, wasn't today (the 20th) the release date for the Koenig? Anybody see her yet? I was all agog (that's right before I reach "amok"), thinking I'd see a mention... Read a mention today of "3D 6mil Rigging Fiber" from Precision Enterprises Unlimited? Anybody use it? Does it work? And I want to echo that one guy's sentiment about this site: I can't wait to check this out each day, and I'm a freakin' treadhead! Hi Peter, Thanks for the compliement. Now, if you're a "treadhead" you should check out fellow SMMLie Robert Lockie's email list: Think Tank. Patterned after SMML, it's a great weekly email list. You could, the hulls are similar, but that is it. You would have to remove the Hull sponson on both sides of the hull for starters. You would need to add the port and starboard elevators. Scratchbuild the island and the twin 3"? gun mount forward of the island. You would have to add all of the embark stations, and the aft "smoking lounge" on the fantail. A lot of work. I have been on both types of ships, and the only similarity is the hull shape. Inside they are totally different, naturally as there is no hangar deck. I would strongly recommend checking references for the particular type of LPH you intend to model, as they are all different. The Inchon had a lot of Crew modified external spaces. The signal bridge in particular was a structure built in the base of the mainmast that the crew built to keep the signal men out of the weather. I don't know if the other LPH's had that feature. Right now the Inchon is the only LPH afloat, and it isn't an LPH any more, it is a Mine Counter Measure Command ship, so it is now MCM 12, vice LPH 12. The gun mount forward of the island is gone, and the deck is marked completely different from when it was an LPH. They even redid the interior with poured tile floors, vice the old floor tile. The old Marine Master Sergeant quarters is now an expanded Chiefs quarters. Not that that would be modeled, but just a little trivia. Regarding the recent post about the Moskva being sighted heading out to sea. The ship was scrapped a few years ago.All of the class have been disposed of by Russia. There is the possibility that the Kiev is still around. She was aquired by China from a Korean scrap dealer, however the word is that she will eventually be pulled to bits (probably for a bit of reverse engineering) and is currently in a state of disrepair. China wound up with an old British WWII carrier in the seventies or early eighties. Austrailia sold it for scrap and, well, it wound up in China. Imagine that! It was possibly one of the Slava class that was seen. They are very large and could be mistaken for a Moskva at a distance. There is a listing of ships of the worlds navies with service histories and dispositions on the "Haze Grey and Underway" page, formerly the "United States Naval and Shipbuilding..." site. I have read some of the past SMML Archives about molding small parts, but what mold & resin material is best without using a vacuum? How do you keep bubbles from forming? However, I did some research and found this: http://starbulletin.com/2000/04/19/news/story4.html It's just one guy. Allan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: "Simon Wolff" Subject: Arizona Drawings & U-571 Hi you all... The drawings of the Arizona that appear on web site mentioned by Derek Wakefield are those appearing in Remembering Pearl Harbour by Michael Slackman (The Official Publication of the Arizona Memorial Association). According to the book ".. the Park Service undertook an underwater archaeological survey in 1983 and 1984" The book also has underwater photos of Arizona. I would love one day visit Hawaii and see the Memorial, have always been fascinated by this sad ship and the story of her entombed crew. By the way a fellow modeller and I saw U-571 (Happy Birthday - Peter Webster) last night. Its like seeing Saving Private Ryan/Das Boot and Indian Jones rolled into one! The special effects are really excellent and the story has a couple of twists... but boy talk about corny! DON'T go and see it if you are likely to take it to seriously or are a retentive modeller because you would tear your hair out when you see the German Destroyer Z29! Hmm in hindsight maybe should have waited until it came out on video.... the Depth Charges are pretty nerve wrecking at times...
