Smith" Subject: USS Oriskany (CV-34) current status Was just leaving Beaumont, Texas by plane yesterday and got a good view of the former US carrier Oriskany (CV-34), which is anchored there as part of the mothball fleet. It appeared that most of the island had been removed. It isn't clear, but the angled deck overhang might be removed as well - as you rise from the airport you're looking straight down the deck from astern, and it looked like a "straight deck" carrier (some of the web pages indicate the overhang was removed before her tow, but I'm not sure about that). From the distance we were at (three or four miles away, at least) that's about all I could tell. We were off her port side, and the only way to identify her for sure was the portside 5" gun gallery. The shields caught the light, and once you knew what you were looking for, you could also make out the bow profile pretty clearly. Just an update. Michael Smith Marshall, Texas -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Jim Burt" Subject: Re: SS United States Hi I think that the deck on the United States were painted green. I guess it depends upon what model you have of it, as, witht the Revell kit, it gives you the paint colors you need, but with the Glencoe, I don't think this one does. The base around the funnels should be green. Check by http://www.ss-united-states.com for reference. Best Regards, Stevo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Jodie Peeler Subject: Re: SS United States/Bremerton sites hello all.... Edward asked: >> i have a question i got the model of the S. S. United States and was wondering what color are the decks which the two smoke stacks rest on gray or green. Most liners have gray around the stacks on the decks. I know most of the decks were green. << I've researched this ship for close to 10 years and I'm still having incredible difficulty finding decent color photos of her when she was in service. From what I can tell, the areas that were gray were mostly areas that were not typically walked on by passengers or crew, or that had specialized functions; the rest of the weather decks (those areas with a good bit of foot traffic) were typically covered in green Neotex, as was done on the NS Savannah 10 years later. Here's what I *think* was gray (and those who know, correct me if I'm wrong, please): -- Top of pilothouse aft of railing directly behind foremast. -- Top levels of forward stack house. -- Top levels of aft stack house (although I can't tell if the platform that stretches back to the recreation area was gray or not). -- Top of aft kingpost house. -- Top of forward deckhouse between the forward kingposts. -- I *think* the top of the deckhouse built into the forward breakwater, but I'm not sure. If anyone has better information, please chip in! >> To the individual asking about Bremerton, WA sites. << To him, too -- don't forget the USS Turner Joy is there too! If memory serves, there are also harbor tours that take you past the shipyard.... jodie http://www.mindspring.com/~raisingirl/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Alan Lindstrom Subject: HMAS Canberra I'm trying to track down the AA fit of the Canberra in 1942. One reference I have indicates that it was 8 single 4" guns, two 8 barrel 2 pdrs, and several 20mms. Another reference indicates that the 4" guns were actualy 4 twins with splinter shielding. If there were 8 barrel pom poms, I can't figure out where they might have been placed. If there were 8 4" guns, I lean toward them being twins since I can't see where 4 additional mounts could have been placed. Any insight out there? Alan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) To: CapnAgee@aol.com, shipmodels@tac.com.au Subject: War Memorials Thank you for your comments. I, too, enjoy visiting relics of past wars. I live near Bremerton,WA. It broke my heart to see the USS MIssouri [which I delighted to visit many times with our house guests] towed past my house on its way to Hawaii. That ship was an old friend - I saw it in the western Pacific many times when I was a 18 year old kid on a sub chaser in 1945. Hawaii was the right place for it because Bremerton could not continue, on a long range basis, to maintain it properly. In spite of this, do you feel we should not have the Vietnam War Memorial, The Korean War Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Marine Corps Iwo Jima Flag Raising Statue at Arlington, the many WW I statues, etc., etc., all in the Nation's Capitol? Isn't it possible that we love, honor and cherish both types of tribute to our veterans? It seems after the air raid the Arizona was stripped down to only a small section left above water. In 1950 a wood platform was mounted on the Arizona for flag rising ceremonies each day. In 1960 the remaining upper works were removed and monument was built. The left over iron was put into storage and forgotten about then in 1996 the National Park Service began an investigation figure out where they were cut from. Also survivors of the raid are the only people allowed to see the scrap metal and get to a small piece as mottoes it's, off limits to the public. We spent a couple of days last week at the museum and it is definitely worth a trip. Ask Gene Davis, the curator, for a listing of their plans of USCG cutters while you're visiting. They also catalog an excellent archive of USCG, U.S. Lighthouse Service and Revenue Marine photos as well. From the I-5 take the Royal Brougham offramp (that's the one that takes you to Safeco Field and the remains of the Kingdome). When you dead-end at Alaskan Way, turn left. The museum is on the right about two blocks down; at the entrance to the USCG Support Center. Admission is free and be advised, they are only open on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays and 1/2 day on Saturday. It's a very friendly atmosphere at the museum and the staff is helpful as well as knowledgable about USCG history. They're all ex-coasties and have put together an excellent museum with good displays. Call for more info: 206-217-6993. BTW we will be reviewing the models and USCG Museum N.W. in Issue Zero of Model Ship Journal. Unfortunately I have had to file this for future use as my employers had a major panic on Friday and I'm now destined for Rotterdam to join a Dutch ship instead of taking a grand old lady for a second and final run up the beach from Oakland. Needless to say I'm more than a little disappointed that I won't get to see all the great stuff you guys directed me towards on Monday, however hopefully one day...! Just so's I don't get withdrawal symptoms whilst I'm away I'll download some of the archives to read on my travels, I've packed a Type 21, a 22 and 2 42's for a bit of modelling diversion, just hoping I get a bit of time to do some! Re the German E-Boat (or S boat), isn't there one at the maritime museum in Bremerhaven? I seem to recall something similar there, it may have been a postwar development though. The superstructure design is well underway. All of the parts designated for white metal casting are finished and in production. The photoetch design is about 3/4 finished, loaded with all the crazy little goodies you could imagine! I will start the instructions as soon as I have all the resin parts in hand. A note on the photoetch; The 20mm guns will have shields, elevating wheel, sight, and shoulder rests. There will be ammo racks for the 40mm's, gun sights, and railing. The radars include an SC, with 5 parts, Mk. 3's, with 3 parts, and Mk. 4's, with 5 parts, and an SG. The catapults and cranes were traced from original USN documents, and are very accurate, with lots of detail. This set will also have parts for the USS Brooklyn kit. This kit will have the quality level as that of my 1/350 Alaska, and if you have not seen one, Alaska kit, that is, then check out a review on the Warship web site, and view pictures there and on my web site. This kit should be out by the first of July, and the first 25 kits will be available exclusively thru Pacific Front Hobbies @ www.pacificfront.com, the same for the 1/350 USS Brooklyn.
