I think the most accurate information of AA fits of CANBERRA at her loss is shown in the museum model build by Mr. Wayne Masters for Australian War Memorial of Naval Gallery. This model is introduced in "Model Shipwright No.68" from Conway Maritime Press. Mr. Masters' model is fitted with four 4 inches guns and seven single oerlikons. 4 inches guns is fitted as she completed, single oerlikons are one on the B turret with round tub, two on the wings of shelter deck aft of the bridge (formerly fitted with 4 barrels 0.5 inches MG), two on the abreast of between first and second funnels (formerly fitted with single pompoms), one on the X turret with tub and one on the quarter deck with tub. In addition to these guns, four small guns are fitted to shelter deck edge just fore of the bridge. I think they are salute guns. Mr. Masters says he spend one year for researching the ship's documents including information from survivors. So I think his model has most accurate and credible informations. Best wishes, Mitsuaki Kubota -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ed G." Subject: USS Arizona I was at the Memorial last September. The model as she is today is still in the visitors center, and was very impressive. Ed -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Joseph Poutre Subject: Manufacturers: A request for RAMs Would someone out there _please_ make a 1/700 detail set of RAM (and maybe SeaRAM) launchers? I could use about 10 myself, and I'd bet you'd sell a lot more. Failing that, can someone point me to a website that has details on the launcher (I have some photos, but no measurements) so I can try scratching one out. Maybe even casting a few, if I'm nuts enough.. Joseph Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fritz Koopman Subject: Other Navy tugs Hello Everyone. I cant speak for the YTB harbor tugs, but if someone out there has the money, maybe you would be interested in buying a couple of Cherokee class ocean tugs that were recently retired from the navy. Escanaba & Lake Superior RR has four of them up for sale. They are described as : Two tugs are at Portsmouth,VA, and two are at Port Richmond in CA. The Tugs in Portsmouth have had $7million of new government - suplied propulsion equipment installed and another $5million was reportedly spent at the shipyard on each vessel in the late 1980's. ll have seen service in destert storm. The tugs have four Caterpilar model D399-V16 dieselectric sets, a 100,000 lb Almon Johnson towing machine and a 10 ton salvage boom rigged over the aft deck The photos show them borded up, riding high (i.e. not a drop of fuel left in the tanks) and suprisingly, # 159 appears to be freshly painted. No, I have no affiliaion with the brokerage, I don't even have their phone number. But if your looking for a new 200 ft yacht! ;-) Best Regards Fritz Koopman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "lcp9" Subject: Re: the KONIGS I too have 1 of these on order from KITLINK. I understand that they shipped via surface shipping in early April. Surface Shipping is measured in weeks & months, so I would not expect to see these before July. David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Steve Sobieralski Subject: German destroyers "Z" armament Two other usefull references for German destroyers are "German Destroyers of World War Two" by M. J. Whitley and the three part article "German Destroyer Design 1936-1945" by Anthony Preston in "Warship, Volume 1". Both are available from the Naval Institute Press. The single 15 cm gun mounts were open at the back and the drawings in "Warship" do show some kind of box on the top of the gun shields. You have to be carefull of your time period with Z31 because she apparently carried three different forward gun mounts: a single 15 cm mount when completed in 1942, changed to a twin mount at the end of the year, which was replaced with a single 10.5 cm AA mount after bomb damage in 1945. There are good photos and drawings of the 37mm and quad 20 mm guns in "Naval Weapons of World War Two" by George Campbell, which may be out of print. The triple torpedo tubes appear to be similar to those used on Scharnhorst and Prinz Eugen with a three-sided spray shield protecting the controls. If you contact me off-list I'll send you scans of some of these items. Steve Sobieralski -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Keith T Bender Subject: Pearl plane crash My friend out in Pearl told me last week a Val. being filmed for the movie crashed. It was only a few feet off the ground when it went down. The pilot got away with only a broken finger. I am planning on building the armored cruiser Memphis (ex-Tennessee). I have plans to make about a 4-ft model and have also reduced them to about 2-ft. My question is what would be the best/easiest way to build the hull for a static model? I was thinking to build keel and frames, then plank over and then fiberglass. Is this a good plan? Should I use only one layer of the thinnest cloth or just use the resin? How thick will this be? Any help or comments would be most appricated. Rich -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: WRPRESSINC@aol.com Subject: Re: Ms 12 late war Ms 12 WAS revised and reintroduced at the very end of 1944, it was then further revised in the latter half of 1945. Those ships that displayed paint lines that followed the sheer line, dated after 1941 and before the end of the war, would probably be Measure nineteen, which was introduced I believe in 1943. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Victor M. Baca" Subject: U.S. Navy Tugs If anyone's still interested in the Navy Tug thread. Check out this month's WorkBoat Magazine. It came in today's mail and has an article on Moran's contract with the Navy. Well researched and interesting to read; the article describes the latest navy tug contracts for the Norfolk, VA area. The 12 YTBs in Portsmouth/Norfolk are history; to be replaced by tractor boats supplied and operated by Moran. Colorful little brutes and reportedly very capable, taking only 8 units to replace the Navy's dozen. I still like 'em gray, though. Victor Baca -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: 20mm Mounts I am currently working on BWN's USS Farenholt, and included in the kit are two sorts of mounts for the 20mm guns. One being the standard resin pedestal, and the other PE brass tripod mounts. I have only seen pictures of 20mm's on the solid pedestals. How common were these tripod mounts, (they look like the .50 cal mounts we had on the NORMANDY), were they early war? Any info appreciated. Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Jeffon10@cs.com Subject: Re: USN colours - Spanish American war Once upon a time I went to the Library of Congress and read an issue of USS OLYMPIA's newspaper. It described OLYMPIA's vertical surfaces as being painted a dark gray with a distinct green tinge. Sadly, I neglected to xerox it. Further on OLYMPIA, I vaguely recall reading all wood was stripped from the ship and the lifeboats were left behind (in Japan?). So, were her decks freshly painted red lead? Were handrails removed? Exactly, what did "stripped/cleared for action mean in 1898?" Answers? Jeff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: peter samolinski Subject: Re: PE letters Hello Shane: thanks for the quick response with the Pearl site! Sami Arim asked about p/e numbers and letters: Techstar, a VLS subsidiary, produces one of each: TC1007 & TC1006, respectively. One of the newer Polish p/e outfits, Aber or Elefant, just came out with one, too. Just between you, me & the SMMLie fencepost, it would probably be a lot cheaper to have a plaque engraved at the local awards place because I doubt you'd get enough on one sheet, and they're not inexpensive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "hugh1lottie2" Subject: big Vosper and blimp Donıt forget the 1/24 scale Vosper MTB-34 [1940] by Colcraft which has a awkward rudder arrangement. I scanned the ³Vosper MTB In Action² for a stern view but there were no photos that helped. Does anyone have a reference that may show the rudder and how it was attached to the transom? The RC Vosper has two large holes that the control horns stick through which leaves the hull unsealed. There has to be a better arrangement that will have watertight integrity. Anyone have any ideals. Loose Cannonıs K-type blimp is available at Colpar Hobbies. It is 1/700 scale and has etched brass props and two depth charges. A stand is provided but I used a wire to suspend mine in a diorama. That big silver gas bag really shows up above the blue water. Looks great over that type IX U-boat. Hugh -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: Ms.22 Etc. Camouflage Question Hi SMML, Thanks for the replies to my questions about the Omaha-class cruisers and Ms. 22 (and late-war Ms.12). First, the photograph of the Memphis is dated (supposedly) October 1945. What was Ms.19, though? Alan Raven's article in Plastic Ship Modeler 1997/3 states that this designation was not used (page 21). Second, at least three secondary sources discuss the use of something called Ms.12 late in WWII; they are the Floating Drydock "Camouflage 2" (the photograph caption on page 64), the same Alan Raven article referred to above, and, as I discovered after I posted the question, Part 16 of Del Palmieri's "USN Camouflage of W.W.2" in the Scale Models of April 1982 (page 199). The latter refers to a Pacific Fleet Confidential Letter and some later instructions that probably supply the official documentation on the late-war use of Ms.12. The Del Palmieri article also answers part of my question, stating that the late-war Ms. 12 called for the dark panel to follow a horizontal line and not the sheer curve. Can anyone give me any specific examples of other ships painted in Ms.22, late-war Ms.12, or, for that matter, Ms.19, where the dark panel matches the sweep of the sheer instead of the horizon? I'm asking because I think it looks much sharper when the dark panel matches the sheer instead of the horizon, and I'd like to build a model of a ship (such as the Memphis) that was so painted. Thanks again! Is there a web-site around that covers it? Also, does anyone make a good WWI era Paulding class destroyer, 1/350 (or larger) scale? Yes, real men ask directions and also read instructions, well sometimes. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the convention. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Tom Detweiler Subject: SMMLcon IDs Hi SMMLies- I won't be able to attend, but if you all want to recognize each other, tee shirts should really be supplemented by propellor beanies. And of course, they should be decorated resplendent with each wearer's obsessions: for example, John Snyder's beanie should be painted in MS-31; Tom Dougherty's beanie should have a 7-bladed zero-cavitation propellor; probably you guys and gals could come up with better ideas. Now Caroline should just wear her bikini! The BAD news is that Peter Hall's 1/350 HMS TRENCHANT arrived heavily damaged by the Royal Mail despite SPECIAL DELIVERY, maximum insurance, and "FRAGILE" labels all over the box.. together with extremely thorough and extensively padded packaging :-( and there is not time to repair the model and its seascape before the event. RM Claims/Compensation dept. here we come! However, he has sent me something else which I will enter .. tho' I'm not saying what! I really look forward to meeting everyone at the event.. safe travelling everyone!
