All fleet warships from destroyers upwards were Scheme A (Summer) or Scheme B (Winter). Scheme B was meant for Mediterranean and Home waters only (guess how closely that was observed). Scheme A was for all other stations all year round. Any warship transferring to a non-Home or Mediterranean station was meant to repaint as soon as possible. This of course didn't necessarily happen. Later Scheme B was abolished and anything larger than a destroyer was meant to be in Scheme A only. It's unfortunate that the Chinese characters for Trojan Horse didn't come out Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: New crash boat book For anyone interested in small combatants, there is a new book out on the USAAF crash boats. Written by the former CO of P-399, it is essentially a memoir of his tour in the Pacific. It's an easy-reading book and provides an interesting glimpse into this seldom-covered branch of the USAAF. For the modeler, there are a number of photos of the boat (a 63' MIAMI - I had a slide of one at the SMMLCON) and some drawings from the operating manual. You can get a copy from: www.tallshipsbooks.com/ McCandlish, Earl A. Crash Boat - Wartime Missions of the P-399. Monticello, IA: Bowsprit Press. 2000. Craig Bennett -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Steve Sobieralski" Subject: Re: Richard Hough and pronouncing English (names) I was saddened to learn recently of the death of author Richard Hough. When I was a kid my father gave me a copy of "Dreadnought" which I treasure to this day. Although over the years it it has been surpassed by by other books on the subject, it contains what I believe is still the one of the most wonderful photographs of a warship ever published - a double page spread of HMS Hood at anchor in Torbay in 1931. Its a peaceful scene, shot almost broadside but slightly from astern, the ship has her awnings out and is attended by a few boats and lighters, but it perfectly captures the size, grace and power of this great ship at the height of her fame and prestege. I don't believe I've ever seen it in any other book. But the reason for my post is that hearing of his death reminded me that I have always wondered about the correct pronounciation of Hough. I've always thought it was "How", but it has occured to me that it could be "Huff" or even "Hodge" or something else entirely. I'm sure that some of the contributors to this list, some of whom may even have known the man, would know the answer. And since I'm asking, how about the great "draughtsman" Norman Ough ("Oh"? "Off"? "Og"?) and the military writer Tony Hogg ("Hog"? "Hodge"?). Just curious, thanks in advance for any answers. Steve Sobieralski -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: APlatte@t-online.de (aplatte) Subject: TIRPITZ colour scheme I need some informations about TIRPITZ last (perhaps?) colour scheme. Was the upper hull and the 1st deck levels(plus the turret A and D and all 15cm turrets) dark-green or dark-gray? The rest of the ship was light-gray. Thanks A.P. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: DILIANE@aol.com Subject: Re: Conways All the World's Fighting Ships Hi! Reference John Rule's inquiry about Conway and the scales, I have taken them at face value to be 1/1250 or 1/5000. This is what is stated as the proper scale, and they seem to measure out correctly. And I was using a conversion of 178% for 1/1250 to 1/700 and 214% for the 1/5000. Hope it's right, check the math. Very good reference book. Also, at the Barnes and Nobles the other day, I located a small book(5' by 6 3/4") book on Destroyers, Frigates and Corvettes. This is by Robert Jackson and has waterline picture/drawings of the listed ships from sailing to modern day. 320 pages and the ISBN is 0-7607-1995-0. The copyright is 2000 and it says it is only printed for B and N. And it only cost 9.98! Check it out! And happy modeling! Steve beat me to the computer on this one.. I would Echo what he has said about this kit. Very well thought out effort for there first ship model..Konig is as she apeared in 1918 with life rafts on her main turrets and no torpedo nets..If the box art is an indication Grosser Kurfurst will be in her 1914 fit with the torpedo nets. You can see on Konigs hull where the hard point for the nets are so this would be an easy retro. Many very fine detailed parts in this kit. Each main gun can be positioned seperate from it turret mate. (nice touch). The ships boats are very nicely done for this scale..I look forward to cutting mine to the waterline and dressing her up. If you,ve ever thought of building a Dreadnought era Battleship this kit is a must.. Cheers Bill Code -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "graham" Subject: Re: Convention in NYC 2001 >> Listen up Plebs, It cannot be held in the land of fruit and nuts because you are forbidden to smoke there. I have been trying, but to no avail, to get copies of the plans depicting the conversion. I've struck out with the Navel Archives in DC and now turning to you for some possible assistance. I have been assured that they are on microfilm, but who, what, when and were is the major question. Can you lead me in a positive direction. In my last quest I had to go to the UK for detailed plans of a US ship while the plans originally came form the US. Appreciate your assistance. Hi all; I would also like to strongly endorse Warship International. I have been getting it since 1971m have back issues to 1969. It has some excellent articles. The recent article (couple years ago) on USS NEW IRONSIDES was one of my favorites. Does anyone make ACW ships in resin larger than 1:600? How about PE for them? Thoroughbred makes a long list of 1:600 models that are great!! Good for wargaming. But I would like NEW IRONSIDES or ATLANTA in maybe 1:300 or so for my den. Was going to do the 1:400 ex-Heller molds POTEMKIN for the den, till I opened the box!! Graf Spee Got one for the DKM types; I've started Italerie's 1/720 Graf Spee, and for those that haven't done one yet, I was very pleasantly surprised. Its a very nice kit, esp at $16US. Fit and finish are excellent, barring the ususal Italerie upper/lower hull joint flail. but one thing lacking are good paint instructions, particularily for the camoflage. Anybody have any ideas? However, the Boston Globe this morning had an article about the banning in Halifax N.S. of perfume, after shave, hair lotion, deodorant and any other lotion or potion that is scented (I have to presume that Nova Scotians don't have a problem with B.O.) and that the Mounties are arresting and criminally prosecuting anyone having the faintest wiff of perfume on or about their person. Is this true and if so might it affect any possible SMML CON? << Hi Gang, No, the reports are greatly exagerated. (mostly by US media) The Hospital where I work advocates a No Scent policy, which asks that people refrain from wearing them in patient care areas, and as I am one of the folks tasked with Enforcement, I can tell you we dont remove people for wearing a dab of their favorite potion. Mounties are generally too busy with murders and drug investigations to be going around sniffing people! (LMAO) ((Although K-9 units do)) And no, Haligonians dont generally have a BO problem, but the harbor makes up for it! Cheers, And Thanks Harold for a much needed belly laugh! Well, we got bars in California that cater only to men too, if that's your sexual preference. For me, I'll take California girls any day, over Neu Yawkers. Paul -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Brian Selzler Subject: Portsmouth 2001 I like Edward's suggestion of a SMMLcon in conjuction with Portsmouth's Festival of the Sea in 2001. He makes a good sales pitch by describing all the area's attractions. There certainly appears to be plenty to see and do. Even if it's only regional (i.e. European......) I'd be willing to cross the Atlantic to attend. Not to belittle anyone else's home but I've already been to most of the potential con-sites already mentioned but, I haven't been to Britain yet. This would be an excuse to correct that omission. I would venture to guess that most of us can only afford a few major trips in our lives so, in my case I would prefer to go somewhere I haven't already been. It's got my vote. As Steve Wiper has said " All good things come to those that wait" for things in the past, I feel that it is also relevant here also. It may be a few weeks yet before we have our detail set released, but this is due to the fact that I want to study the kit and the plans to see exactly which areas need attention. It would be pointless replacing perfectly good kit parts, when the space on the fret could be used for other details. I'm not saying this will be the case but it is a thought. Then there is getting the photo etch to fit the kit parts, and not just designing something according to the plans. And who knows Steve, the best may come from the same side of the Atlantic as the original ship, and the kit itself. Watch this space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
