There will be numerous sailing ships coming into port the second week of July. One of the main attractions will be when the USS John F. Kennedy comes in on Monday, July 10. I believe she's expected to be in port for about a week or so, and there will be other ships of her group also in port. For details see the following website: http://www.sailboston.com/index.shtml Rod. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "John Snyder" Subject: Re: HELP James, Regarding the book _USS ENTERPRISE in detail & scale_, contact me off-list at: mailto:John_Snyder@macnexus.org >> An absolutely MAD Scotsman from Glasgow << Is there any other kind?? The story of Beatty was fantastic, and perhaps could start other looking for the model, or looking for those cruiser paintings! BTW, the reason California is referred to as the land of fruits and nuts is because so many "furriners" have moved here from everywhere else! Wasn't a bad place when we natives (my great-grandfather was an honest-to-God '49er who arrived in the California Gold Rush) had it to ourselves (of course, the Native Americans are probably saying the same thing). Now, get a cigar and a whiskey and get busy with your memoirs! John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys (who owe much to Mr. WRPRESS) http://www.shipcamouflage.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Navy Web Sites At long last, the International Naval Review (INR2000) has a web site established, and it includes detailed links on the participating naval ships, OPSAIL tall ships, and countries that are supporting this event in New York City in July. It's at: www.inr2000.navy.mil and there are even some good links to nautical museums, ship models, naval literature and more. Worth checking out. Those interested in modern USN surface vessels also might want to visit: http://surfacewarfare.nswc.navy.mil/n86 for information on ships, weapons systems, R&D, and related magazine articles. Mike Alexandria, VA USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Paul Jacobs Subject: Norman Ough Well at least Alan and I do agree on one thing: Ough was the greatest model ship builder. His models were simply astounding. Not just real, but alive in their own way. It is sad that no book was ever written with comprehensive photos of his work. I do still remember well the DORSETSHIRE model that Alan referred to, having first seen it in 1968. What a masterpiece. In 1992, while travelling in southern England, we visited the home of the Mountbatten's, which is open to the public. There are a number of ship models there, including a model by Ough of a VW Class DD, one of Mountbatten's ships between the wars. It is of course the standout in the collection of naval memorabilia, which makes up but a small part of the tour. Unfortunately, because the tours are strictly guided, no time is given to linger and appreciate it, and undoubtedly few of the tourists give it more than a passing glance. Paul Jacobs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Francis Macnaughton" Subject: LCA and small boats I've caught up with my SMML backlog again and, in response to some recent questions, first for LCA s as I remember there is one preserved at the D Day museum at Arromanches while the old MAP plans service (now NEXUS?) still sells MM1288 Landing craft with useful 1/32nd drawings of the LCA and the LCM3. For small boats, Quaycraft, 73 Chambercombe Road, Ilfracombe, Devon EX34 9PH, UK , phone 01272 866837, does a range in most scales of open boats cast in resin, including RN whalers in 1/128, 1/96 and 1/48. Hope that helps Francis -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Vikings in DC A new exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC is called "The Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga". Billed as a 'multi-media extravaganza' (see the article at: http://yp.washingtonpost.com/E/E/WASDC/0001/74/66/cs1.html for the full story) and running through August 13th, this exhibit is timed to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Leif Ericson's explorations of present day Canada. Relics found from digs in Newfoundland are included in the display, as are a variety of paintings, photographs, dioramas, and other media. Mike Alexandria, VA USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Kiev Saw a report yesterday that the former Soviet/Russian CVHG "Kiev" is under tow to China, presently in the vicinity of the Shetland Islands, and will make a stop in Johannesburg, South Africa along the way (presumably to refuel the tug). Supposedly this is another attempt to turn a former warship into a floating tourist attraction. Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Emden? I broke down and bought the Emden yesterday (the 1/350 scale version); I'm looking for: 1. Reference materials 2. After-market goodies I also bought Anthony Preston's "Great Warships" which has a chapter on Emden, but no plans and not enough good photos to suit my modeling reference needs. I also acquired one of the Polish kits of the Type II U-Boats, the early model (if it's good, I'll probably build them all). I have some references on U-Boats, but always welcome more - and also welcome any leads to after-market accessories for 1/400 U-Boats. Finally, anybody have a source on 1/700 U-Boat after-market accessories and upgrades? Ned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Minsk? I read where the PRC is acquiring Minsk as it's carrier - then Trumpeter's Minsk shows up in my local hobby shop (for $59 - ouch) - coincidence? I think not. Is it a good kit (can any injected plastic kit be $59 good?) ... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Loren Perry - Gold Medal Models To the Mad Scot - Loren Perry is a real person (and a real nice guy) who has a website at: http://www.goldmm.com His book has just been reprinted, for about $12. Sadly, he doesn't take magic plastic, so I'm sending him my check - you may want to do the same thing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: pugs99@att.net Subject: Anchor Chain Hi All, I have run out of the "stash" of Anchor chain that I had been using on my models and have been having trouble locating a source for chain that will be good for ship kits. I build mostly in 1/350 thru 1/700. I had been using chain from a hobby shop that closed several years ago and they had sold 3 different sizes. I am also looking for chain that would look right on the Glencoe Oregon and the Revell Olympia. Any help finding a source would be appreciated. Also, I am "offering"(trying to avoid the v for volunteer word) to help with organizing SMML 2001 if NYC is chosen, as I live just outside the city. Thanks in advance. John Impenna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: LCVP Story An article concerning the development of the LCVP, designer Andrew Higgins, and the soon to open US National D-Day Museum can be found at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A23455-2000May28.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: lowj Subject: Help with Japanese warship reference material. I am new on the list and I am hoping that you will be of help to me. I build warship models in 3-D. My web site is at http://www.tir.com/~lowj/Index.htm. I am presently completing a model of the Akizuki and getting ready to start on the next project. This will likely be the IJN heavy cruiser Mogami. In the mean time I am interested in acquiring a number of reference books with the following description "Shashin Nihon-no Gunkan" (Pictures of Japanese Warships) published by Kojinsha. Apparently there are 6 or more volumes of these books, plus 2 volumes with plans. Does anyone know where these can be purchased? Thanks for your help ahead of time. J. Ed Low. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Mitsuaki Kubota Subject: HMCS Snowberry questions Hi all I received Revell HMCS Snowberry kit recently from WEM. (Thank you for sending the big packet, Caroline) This is very challenging kit, but I have some questions and problem about painting. Firstly, the instruction sheets tell the hull bottom should be painted in matt anthracite gray. Does anyone know is it true or not for actual ship? Secondly, the decal sheet of gun shield art is some of disappointing. So I have to paint it by my hands, but I can't determine the color details. I have found the monochrome photo of Donald Duck gun shield art in IPMS Canada magazine (RT vol.13 no.5 1980), but I can't examine the correct colors. Does anyone know the details of colors? Best regards, Mitsuaki Kubota -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: CBNJBB62@aol.com Subject: Re: Detail & Scale 15 & 16 Hi Gene Thanks for your reply. I made a comparison with a book called Carrier Air War in original WW2 color. US Navy Air Combat 1939-46 it covers the carrier Yorktown a lot and in comparison to the part 2 book on the Corsairs by Detail and Scale #56 covering the Korean war they are a match. So they were using flight deck no. 21 stain with zinc chromate yellow hull numbers and deck markings. I just wanted to be sure. With that done thanks. How much do you charge a set ? Are they too large to E-mail in Winzip compressed .DWG archive format? Or should they be sent in the new DWF format ? Hms Hood visited New Zealand in 1924 on its World Cruise.New Zealand had its own battlecruiser gifted to the Royal Navy.It was cunningly named Hms New Zealand. Hallo List, I would just like to express my apprecion of Steve Wiper's comments re. the Konig/ Grosser Kurfurst PE set after Peter Hall's post. Folks should know that Steve is both competition in the business AND a darned good mate, as is Loren Perry of Gold Medal Models. This is nice! We are all three of us TOTALLY dependent on our businesses to put the bread and butter on the table (and of course, there is the "part-and-parcel" dedication to our customers, the hobby, and to quality, research and accuracy..) .. this is not some part-time day job for us.. yet the "rivalry" that exists between us has always been gentle and non-competitive, and I have always been able to happily promote Gold Medal Models products AND Classic Warships products, and will continue to do so.. I know that the feeling is mutual. I also know that there has never been any "rip-off" between us and Gold Medal Models .. and Loren, I think, appreciates that, as do we... our designs, patterns, artwork, and instructions are all original, as are Loren Perry's. We have very strong views on this subject indeed... as, of course, does Loren! So.. thanks, guys, for being the friends that you are.. and may it always be so. I am now able to provide you with books from the following publishers: Naval Institute Press, Conways, Putnam, Ian Allan, Blue Jacket, Anatomy, Illustrated Design Histories and a host of others. I shall also endeavour to bring these books to you, at the best price on the web. I have added 28 titles to this point with more every day. If there is any book that you want please contact me for a quote. If you can find the book you are looking for on the web, let me know where and how much and if I can, I will meet or beat that price. I am able to get aircraft and armour books as well. I have no idea how much shipping is going to be. Whatever it is, it will be at close to cost as possible. If anybody is willing to commit to a specific book, I shall order it in, and when it arrives I can tell you exactly how much it will be to ship. Or for now, you can just add an additional $5 to the price of the book and I will refund you the balance, credit you or if it is more, eat it (lucky you). This does not go for something like AD Baker III's Combat Fleets of the World 2000-2001. There is absolutely no way I am shipping that monster for $5 :-p I know the "international" members generally do not find it worth their while to purchase goods in North America. If you are truly interested in purchasing a book from me, I know of a way that may ease the monetary pain. Contact me for more info. I am still not willing to commit to credit card sales. If this goes well, then I will seriously look into it. As of June 1, 2000, I shall be donating a small portion of every sale to the HMCS Annapolis Museum and to LPBC, which is a local charity that I use to be very involved with. Happy modeling (like I have any time to do that now) Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Caroline Carter" Subject: NEW BOOKS FROM WEM.. HERE NOW!! Hi Guys, I JUST got in the delayed delivery of Profile Morskie books. BS Press Profile Mors #22 Tama $12.78 US BS Press Profile Mors #23 Porter " BS Press Profile Mors #24 Yukikaze " BS Press Profile Mors #25 Royal Oak " These titles are now becoming THE classic references on their respective subjects, but the earlier titles such as HMS YORK are now out of print. Grab them while you can! Also... Okriety Swiata 10 Iowa Class Battleships Part Two. This is much bigger than Part One, with 78 pages, and very good photo quality throughout (50 in all, including many full-page pix), including some in colour, together with colour camouflage drawings, and nice detail drawings of weapons and equipment throughout. In the centre there is a 1:600 Scale P+P of IOWA in 1987, and a series of Plan and Profile drawings in a smaller scale of: New Jersey 1969, Wisconsin and Iowa 1958, Iowa 1943, New Jersey 1945.. all in, I think that this is astounding value for 8.99 Pounds ($13.60). Also, a new title, Polish.. "OPERATION RHEINUBUNG" which details the Bismarck chase. This is hardbound, A4, 152 pp. Very high quality indeed... LOADS of good quality photos (150 in all) Polish text. There are many good photos of British ships in here, including an almost-overhead view of Sussex in camou (showing that camouflaged deck.. oops!), and a cracking one of Norfolk in 1940 in a colourful 4-colour scheme with a false bow and stern.. not one that I have ever come across before! A LOT of the photos of RN stuff are new to us! This book is priced at 11.99, which I think is VERY cheap for a book of this quality. So.. those of you who ordered yours will receive it very shortly.
