I think it is a good kit. The plastic aerials and small fittings are good, but some photoetched replacements would be better. There is very little to guide you re: rigging (mast and anchor). Here, some research will be needed. Dave Miller -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Cooper, Mike" Subject: Re: RAF Launches Hi Folks Shane may die of shock, but its sunny here in downtown Reading! Yep that really is sunshine, I can tell by the way it glints of the wet pavements..... OK. RAF Rescue Launches - John Pritchard wrote a whole series about them in Model Boats years ago. I have photocopies of these. A company called Canimpex published a series of books on the history of RAF rescue units and craft and Pritchard himself did a couple just giving colour schemes, as well as odd articles in Airfix Mag. I'm afraid Uncle Mike can't guarantee to make multiple copies of these, but I can assemble a list of references if people would like to mail me off list, maybe. I can probably do odd ones.... The series covered everything bar the Type II HSL for some reason, but Mil.Mod and Battle did features on the type by Pritchard, and thh series also covered tenders used as ASR launches. I'm off to participate in some local Canada Day celebrations.....or so I'm told! Cheers - my off list e-mail is coopmik1@hotmail.com - this avoids my work mailbox. Mike "I'm gonna finish that **** Algerine this year" Cooper Reading UK, where it's a lovely bright evening - so there! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Future Ship Kits from ICM I received a one page catalog from ICM with small color thumbnail images of all their kits and future kits. Since the box art on the SMS Konig kit is really as the kit appears, then I think it is safe to say that the other images are a good indication of what is to come. #1 SMS Konig is out now, and what a beauty. #2 is to be the SMS Großer Kurfurst, in the 1916 Jutland fit. #3 is to be IJN Takao in a mid-war fit. #4 is to be IJN Chokai in an early war fit, looks like Guadalcanal. #5 is to be the HMS Hood, looks like her final fit. All these kits are listed for the year 2000. It will be interesting to see if they can really do all these kits in this year. If so, what a boon to the model ship world. There is a book available on it from a company called pacific front hobbies or any decent hobby shop. The book is called the Omaha class photo album from Classic Warship. Craig Bennett -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: jbklb Subject: Re: USS Marblehead (CL-12) USS Marblehead (CL-12) was an "Omaha Class Cruiser" commissioned in September of 1924. Steve Wiper's book, Omaha Class Cruisers, in the Warship Pictorial series (#6) by Classic Warships Publishing has 5 pages of pictures and some brief history of the ship. It also includes the same on each of the "Omahas". Good reading for about $10.00. BILL RAY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Dave Judy Subject: Re: Marblehead Josh, The Marblehead was an Omaha class light cruiser, built in the early "20s, she was stationed with the Asiatic fleet when the war broke out. She had a harrowing experience eluding the Japanese, with major structural damage from air attacks she managed a 9000 mile trip from Java to various ports looking for repair facilities and finally home, a tribute to her crew and officers. Commander Models has a 1/350 Detroit, and with a little conversion work can be built as Marblehead. John Anderson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Peter K. H. Mispelkamp" Subject: Re: Revell Graf Zeppelin Special thanks to Paul O'Reilly. Not my question, but I have two of these kits, and plan to build one as her never launched sistership. For what's worth, my Luftwaffe references indicate that a small series of 109T-0 fighters were completed with folding wings. I have thought of using the WEM rendition of 109's but those smaller and rounder wing tips are still troubling me. As for the Stuka's, my sources state that the Ju 87C-0 variant featured "manually folded outer wing panels", while the proposed C-1 would have "an electronic wing folding mechanisms. Certainly sounds like the C-0 definitely did not have backward folding wings of the Wildcats. I wonder if enough of us got together we might be able to get WEM to make a special aircraft set for this kit - Bf 109T's and Fi 167A's to complement their Ju 87's? I just know I don't need 20+ bags of these planes! Sincerely. Peter K. H. SMML cons in San Francisco Unfortunately, Tom Detweiler's comments about the political environment in San Francisco have the ring of truth. This is all the more regrettable because the San Francisco Bay Area occupies a huge place in US Naval History. The Mare Island Navy Yard, Alameda Navy Base, Alameda US Coast Guard base, the Kaiser yards in Richmond and Sausalito et al are also part of the Bay Area in addition to San Francisco. Is there a WW2 Pacific Theatre ship that didn't come through San Francisco Bay for refit, repairs, or re-provisioning at one time or another? Having said that, I personally am reluctant to surrender the field to the weird dynamics of San Francisco politics. There are many ship modeling and naval enthusiasts in the Bay Area. Numerous ships (and not just WW2 era)are open for display, and more are under restoration. This area is steeped in maritime history, and scenery and weather are without parallel. For those of you who prefer to do your sightseeing from a bar stool, there are SF establishments catering to every conceivable taste - even irascible, heterosexual cigar-smoking authors with British accents. Remember, the Bay Area is not just San Francisco, and not all of us wear dresses (though I do have a miniature poodle). The fact that I live within sight of SF Bay has absolutely nothing to do with my opinion that this would be a great place for a SMMLiecon. Rob Mackie Warship Webmaster and Editor http://warship.simplenet.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject: Re: SMML Cons Tom Detweiler writes: >> I would discourage San Francisco as a SMML-con site except daytour visits, for the reason that it doesn't respect veterans or Navies at all: This is the city that has lobbied to keep the Iowa OUT of San Francisco (at last report undecided), has told the Navy it might no longer hold "Fleet Week" there, has barred nuclear powered USN vessels from entering the port of SF, is publicly scornful of the Blue Angels complains about the noise, etc. - The city's lunatic inmates are running the asylum there. << While I am loathe to get into a political debate, and you have some valid points regarding the funding of the Memorial Day parade, you exaggerating a bit on the other points, IMHO. The only reason I am answering it is because it affects the choice of the San Francisco Bay Area (and I thought we were talking about the Hornet, which is in Alameda, across the bay). San Francisco has lobbied to bring the Iowa into town as a museum attraction. There was a dispute regarding homeporting the Missouri when she was an active unit of the Navy back in the late 80's. San Francisco supports Fleet Week, so much so that the commander, 3rd Fleet is bringing in the ships a day early this year, because last year's visit was so enjoyable. Our local Navy League is more active than it has been in years, greeting ships when they visit with flowers and plates of cookies. CVN-72, the nuclear powered Abraham Lincoln, was anchored just off Treasure Island for the better part of a week last year. Submarines routinely come into the bay for various reasons. Each year there are a few dozen phone calls regarding the noise of the Blue Angels. Approximately 500,000 people line the waterfront to watch them. Guess which one gets media play? San Francisco has one of the only working, seaworthy Liberty ships, and a fine preserved example of a Fleet Boat. You will find memorials to veterans all over town (even the bridge of the USS San Francisco), and also a nice tribute to the Merchant Marine along the waterfront. Funds are being appropriated to construct a version of the Lone Sailor statue near the Golden Gate Bridge. Does San Francisco have a left wing government? Yes. Is it antimilitary? No, but it tends to fund groups that have political clout and make the most noise. Traditionally, veterans groups are not that vocal. This year that changed, and I will bet that the funding for the parade next year is considerably higher.
