You're looking in the wrong place for plastic owls in any scale. They only can be found in old growth plastic trees. Since the evil plastic loggers clear cut the plastic trees in Oklahoma none can be found. However, they have been spotted in wooden K Mart signs in the area. Go figure. Does anyone know, or can anyone direct me to references that describe Queen Mary's AAA fit at the time of the collision? One source mentions 20mms, rocket launchers (UPs?), and directors. Any additional, more detailed info or references would be greatly appreciated. << YES!, this is a fantastic little model. I did two of them several years ago, one in civilian colors and one in wartime colors. In the Anatomy of Ship book QUEEN MARY, on pages 54 and 55, are fantastic drawings showing all you need to know to make the conversion. It includes gun positions, extra lifeboats, Carley floats, gundirectors, external Degaussing coil, etc. After you paint everthing gray, a little drybrushing with a lighter gray makes all the detail stand out. Cheers, Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "RBFISH" Subject: Queen Mary This is for Michael regarding his query about the Queen Mary and HMS Curacao I have a call in to the historical dept: of the Queen Mary, which is now in Long Beach California at 1126 Queens Highway, Long Beach, Calif.- zipcode- 90803 phone 1-562-435-3511 and her decks where never panted gray, and there is one Twin AA Gun, port side, just forward of the bridge, also some War-time photos of the Q.M. on Board the ship its self, as far as the HMS Curacao still looking, I'm busy working on AV-3 USS Langley 1937 after her redesign to Seaplane Tender in 1;96 scale. It shows the pre rebuilt 1942 version of the Honolulu, but with a paint scheme that she wore only after much reconstructive surgery in 43. Of the Brooklyn class cruisers, we know for certain that Savannah received the 4 twin 5"-38 turrets. We also know that Phoenix and Nashville did not, as photo's of them as the General Belgrano, and Captain Prat show the original single 5"-25 gun mounts. The ex-Brooklyn renamed O'Higgins seems to have the original armament as well. That leaves the Philadelphia and Honolulu, as possible candidates for refitting to the dual mounts. I know that Honolulu underwent a refit at the end of the war, but don't know her final configuration. That's about as much as I can "regurgitate", I'll await some "original research" for definitive proof. I anxiously await the next Classic Warships book, especially if it's on the Brooklyn / St. Louis class CL's. mailto:Cadman@kc.net http://www.kc.net/~cadman/ "A still sea never wrought a skillful sailor" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "bearkat_ind" Subject: Resin and Hardner Where can I locate commercial grade resin and hardener to stiffen plastic ship models (without shrinkage nor hull distortion) so when anchored to the base stand the model will be supported by more than .100" of polystryrene? Think I need about a pint of resin and the appropriate hardener, have three ships in the ways, and think this will be sufficient, will use all at one time. Also where is a good source to get molded seamless plastic covers for the models, am using 6" x 27" and 6" x 29" planks of very fancy burl walnut for the bases. Have spent some time on a lathe making some fancy standoffs and at the point now where the finished hulls need protection. The height of the cases need be 9 -11 inches respectively. All dimensions are internal. Thanks for your help. Jack -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Ned Barnett Subject: PT Frustrations ... Some frustrations, then a real question ... I am having trouble persuading Hennets that their website is the problem (not the size of my order) and I'm having a real challenge purchasing some .50 cal. M-2HMG (Ma Deuce) weapons for my soon-to-be 1/72 PT boat. What I really want, and have not been able to determine if it really exists, is a set that would provide a full PT weapons load-out (in typically high after-market quality) for the various Elcos that could be modeled from Revell's boat without major plastic surgery: .50 dual-mounts 20 mm pedestal mounts (no shields) 40 mm stern mounts 37 mm Oldsmobile autocannon 37 mm anti-tank cannon (with scale coconut logs) roll-off torpedo mounts (with torpedos decent and accurate torpedo tubes (for the early boats) depth charges smoke generators various radar/mast fittings rocket launchers (2) with reload deck-boxes Sure, I could model all of these from scratch; however, that is not my life-goal. I'm doing my first scratch-built now (Noah's Ark) and I'm having the devil's own time creating the bow- and stern-chaser Oto Melara 76 mm autocannon mounts that my research suggests Noah used (without turret enclosures, so I'm having to scratch the auto-loading features, etc.) ... These were fitted, my research points out, just in case he wasn't the only Ark on the lake, so to speak - and contrary to Randy's C-Whiz Owl theory, .while the Ark was equipped with owls, they did not come with their USN-official underfoot C-3POs ... Having wrestled with that Oto Melara challenge in the "universal standard" 1/292nd scale I'm using for the Ark, I'd really rather just assemble and paint a great PT using after-market goodies to trick it out. So, having expressed my frustration, my question: Does anybody know of any after-market kits that have one, some or all of the above? If not, does anybody have plans for converting the Grosser Kurfurst's after-market PE1/350 quick-fire batteries into 1/72nd .50 cal. paired AA guns? (OK, two questions - so shoot me ... ) Thanks Frustrated Ned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Hail to the Queen >> 1) The GHQ model basically shows Queen Mary in her civilian fit, and I will need to "militarize" her. Does anyone know, or can anyone direct me to references that describe Queen Mary's AAA fit at the time of the collision? One source mentions 20mms, rocket launchers (UPs?), and directors. Any additional, more detailed info or references would be greatly appreciated. 2) When serving as a troop transport, was the Queen Mary's deck kept natural teak or overpainted gray? << In Queen Mary Superliner Pictorial (purchased at the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach) an aerial photo of her at the outset of the war seems to indicate (it's B&W) that her decks were painted. Especially the foredeck seems to have the same reflectivity as the fore hull and the stacks. But that's interpretation, not fact. Motorbooks' Great Liners at War has a chapter on the QM. It has text references (get it, you'll want it), a photo of a .50 mg AA gun, a photo of HMS Curacao in the colors she wore (according to the caption) at the time of the collision and photos of the damaged bow of the QM, which may shed light on the actual ramming (angles, etc.). It also describes the collision (QM hit Curacao 11 feet forward of the stern, spinning the warship around and driving the two sections of the ship apart. There are also illustrations of the degaussing girdle and forward gun tubs. I could not find it in the current Internet Modeler, which, of course, changed on 1 July. A manufacturer or supplier and their address would be appreciated. Among the thirty or so intended participants from SMML in the IPMS/USA nationals, is there anyone who will be traveling from San Antonio to Dallas on Wednesday, 17 July? I would be willing to share driving and gas in exchange for a ride. I will be vacationing in SA and am trying to avoid having my spouse make the 700 mile round trip to drop me off for the show. Please respond off line before 7 July. Concerning the SMML gathering in Dallas, I'm easy. Most any time would be fine for me except the banquet; I'm not planning to attend, even if I have to stand for the awards ceremony. So, does the Regency have a swimming pool? Looking forward to the gig. Oh. John Snyder, leave your kevlar jacket at home. Texans are friendly folks. All the other best ofs are sponsored and I thought it would just be a crime if the Best Ship award was the only one left unsponsored. Sponsorship for the Best Ship award is $175.00. Flagship has already sponsored two categories, so I hope someone here will help out. << Rusty (and all) - A radical idea from a radical relative newcomer (who's eating his liver that he can't make it to Dallas - my wife doesn't understand that we have a wedding anniversary every year, but IPMS Dallas '00 is a once-in-a-lifetime ... sigh) ... We could (SMML) sponsor it. Toward that end, I will pledge $5 toward the trophy - at that rate, if my math is right, 35 of us could cover the cost. If the 30 who are attending each kick in $5, that leaves only four more non-attendees to contribute. If that doesn't work, I could even go as high as $10 - but I feel $5 a head is a "democratic" way to handle this, assuming anybody but me likes this idea. R-Aircraft or Helicopter carrier. S-Submarine C- Cruiser or Command ships D-Destroyer Frigate Minesweeper P-Patrol ship Landing ship A-Auxiliaries Then it struck me that looked familiar somehow so I browsed thru other NATO countries and it seems they also use a similar systems. The chances of snagging seating for 30 people in close proximity is remote at best. I would suggest meeting at the hotel restaurant between lunch and dinner or maybe for a brunch. Say about 2:30 for lunch or 10:30 for brunch. The restaurant is virtually empty at those times of day and should be no real problem getting seating for 20 or 30.
