It didn't sell, and it was a mere $825,000 for the opening bid :-) http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=368930817 Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Anatomy of the ship Gambier Bay Well I managed to do it again, I have an extra copy of AOTS Gambier Bay. If anyone is interested, I'll let it go for $60 plus postage. If not it goes to Ebay. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: RhinoBones@aol.com Subject: 1:700 Scale Ship Props I need a source of 1:700 scale ship props suitable for turn of the century ships . . . anyone know of a good source? I've looked through all of my usual sources for PE and detail and have found nothing smaller than 1:500. Regards, RhinoBones -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Burl Burlingame / Pacific Monograph Subject: Radeau Hey, anyone out there know anything about radeau, the "floating fortresses" used in the 1700s? Are there any drawings or pictures? They even had names, like Land Tortoise and Thunderer. I can only echo what has been said previously. It's a terrific decal set well worth the money. One thing I can add. It has a number of Desert Storm related markings which would place it in that time frame. Stephen Rogers" Subject: CSS Alabama There was a recent thread on this ship earlier...(Revell re-issue). Can someone tell me the scale of this kit? I saw several in a local shop and since the History Channel has been running a great series called "Civil War Combat", my interest has been peaked. Has anyone built it and how is the detail, etc? Steve Rogers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Stephen C. Gustafson" Subject: 1:1200/1:1250 ship models I just received in the mail today my first ever model manufactured by Saratoga Model Shipyard (our own Paul Jacobs). It is of AO-1 USS Kanawha. For those of you who know this scale of ship, you know what Neptun quality means. This is as good or better than anything Neptun manufactures. In a note to him this morning, I could only describe it as exquisite and look forward to many more Saratoga Model Shipyard models. This is BEAUTIFUL work, Paul! Steve Gustafson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Stephen C. Gustafson" Subject: New Submarine Book (to me) I just received a new submarine book by Claude C. Conner. Entitled Nothing Friendly in the Vicinity...My Patrols on the Submarine US Guardfish during WWII. The ISBN is 1-882810-41-4 with cost approx $25.00 for 200+ pages. Mr. Conner was a radar technician on the Guardfish and relates his experiences during the war. An interesting point to the book is it is written from an enlisted point of view not an officers (very few this way). He was a shipmate of Clay Blair (we all know and revere this name) during the last year of the war. The book is available at all the usual stops or from the author at: ccconner@earthlink.net He's a very nice gentleman and I recommend doing business with him. Thanks, Steve Gustafson Where summer is finally playing in Peoria Hi Stephen, Ok, I'll bite - who the hell is Clay Blair? I am in the preliminaries of designing a homepage dedicated to CA-38, USS San Francisco. Primarily I need advice...is this the proper forum to ask for some help? If not, could those of you willing to invest a few minutes in assisting me, drop an E-mail? Thanks... Don Carner Hi Don, Depends on what advice you need. If it's html coding advice, well while we have many knowledgable webmasters here, this may not be the right place for extended answers. However, post your queries & we'll go from there ;-). Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: spullig Subject: Forced Perspective This is from the best of the non-modelers in the group. I picked up a MODERN MILITARY TECHNIQUES: AMPHIBIOUS TECHNIQUES in a used book store in that Meca of naval books San Antinio Tx, {yes it is hot] looking at the drawings makes me wonder if you could do a forced perspective, eye level, looking out from the shore, some of the new 1/350 landing craft coming on shore, some 1/400 landing ships offshore, box scale and smaller out past that and 1/700 carriers etc at the back? The railroaders do it a lot but I think they use non scale trees etc to "block" for them. Any ideas? Samuel W. Pullig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: spullig Subject: Old Magazines As noted in my last post we hit all the used book stores in San Antinio. Picked up some old [70s and 80s ] magazines. Got the ones that had naval articles in them. Most are SCALE MODELS, AIRFIX, And ARMY AND NAVY MODELWORLD. 1st is ARMY & NAVY still around? I liked it. Do the little 2-4 page articles in the old British magazines have any current value for those of you that DO really model? If so I can scan and send to you. I could post a list to the list. Samuel W. Pullig Hi Sam, No Army & Navy Modelworld unfortunately is not still around, I think it finished in the late 1980s. Anyone interested should possibly contact Sam off list Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "John Snyder" Subject: Re: questions Friedrich: >> To which class did they belong? Perhaps he'll see this.... John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys http://www.shipcamouflage.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Chris Christenson" Subject: PTs at Pearl Harbor I was talking to a customer in the lumber yard I work at the other day and the discussion got around to a trip he's taking in a week or so to the New England area. Having been there a couple of times myself I told him about the USS Mass. the USS Salem, etc. He then told me he was an ex-destroyerman in WWII (forget now which ship he was on--oh well, I'll have to pump him for more info later!). Anyway when I told him about the PT museum in Fall River he got interested and said that he didn't have any contact with PTs until after the war at PH when he said he saw some landed and stacked up in some kind of rack. Anyone ever see anything like this? The time frame would be late 45 or early 46. I haven't had time to check my resources. Could be an interesting diorama scene. Chris Christenson Ord, Neb. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Richard Eaton" Subject: DD-21 Anyone else see the AP story floating around about the US Zumwalt class destroyer announced this week at Operation Sail? A good bit lower and flatter than other artist's renderings I've seen. They likened it to a US civil war gunboat. All electric propulsion and a 155 mm gun with a 60 mile range. It would make an interesting kit. Anyone seen more info on this or heard of anyone working up a kit?
