It seems there is a lot of people interested in the 1/400 Tecnomodel kits of Italian ships; I never expected such a big interest, as I received a lot of info requests off list...really, a nice surprise. Well, Tecnomodel seems not to have any website nor e-mail address, as all my search in this direction was unsuccessful; however, I could find their distributor for Italy, Astromodel in Genoa, which most probably may be helpful as regards catalogues or, at least, availability in Italy and overseas: www.astromodel.it (no Tecnomodel subjects in their website) e-mail: mailto:astromodel@aleph.it If I will receive any news about this matter, I'll keep you updated - if somebody will need any further help, feel free contact me. Greetings from Italy, Giusto Gallas -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Clay Blair >> Ok, I'll bite - who the hell is Clay Blair? Shane << Perhaps the most prolific and authoritative writer on the subject of US submarine and U-Boat ops in WW-II - he wrote two-volume sets on both. I understand he died within the past year ... and his two-volume U-Boat set is now available in Trade Paperback (i.e., for less money) - saw it at Borders last week. Ned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Forced Perspective >> makes me wonder if you could do a forced perspective, eye level, looking out from the shore, some of the new 1/350 landing craft coming on shore, some 1/400 landing ships offshore, box scale and smaller out past that and 1/700 carriers etc at the back? The railroaders do it a lot but I think they use non scale trees etc to "block" for them. Any ideas? << You don't need trees, Sam ... I did a forced perspective boxed diorama of an F-117 airstrike over an Iraqi airbase some years back, using a 1/200 Dragon F-117 (grossly inaccurate, so useful only for a night diorama ) and some 1/700 aircraft and ground/hanger buildings. I created the box from acrylic plastic on a wooden base; I used gray film (used in laying out printed items) on the four walls to force the viewer to look from above. Everything was painted in black or shades of gray (it was a night scene - color would have been out of context) and mounted the F-117 on a clear plastic sprue above the runway. The scene worked - making me convinced that a forced-perspective diorama can work without trees if you control visual access. My next forced-perspective diorama will be a joke (literally) called "Stealth Airshow" - F-117s in three scales tricked out as Thunderbirds (in the background) with figures in three scales (in the foreground) scanning the skies for the airshow performance and looking everywhere EXCEPT at the planes (remember, this is a joke ...). But for a serious forced-perspective diorama, your idea of the invasion works. One final note. If you're doing eye-level, remember to make the base slope upward toward the back. Read Shep Paine's book on dioramas (it's just been re-issued as an expanded and updated version by Kalmbach - both are still available and the original is about 1/3 less) to see how this is done (he uses city streets for armor dioramas, but the principle should work for seascapes). So, for the moment, until I can check it out some more, I'll just say we're the smallest continent ;-). << Not a good way to compare I'm afraid, Shane. The projection (Mercatorian?) used in Atlasses is notorious for its distortions toward the poles. The best way to compare is a globe... And I always heard to that Greenland is the biggest island... I also bought a Balkan from every ship I went on except 2. Both the French ship 'DE GRASSE' and the USCGC DALLAS were sold out of caps. : ( Is there any one out there that can either point me to a source where I can purchase these 2 caps? or maybe someone could arrange with me off line to buy a cap the next time one of these ships comes to a port nearby? As an aside, I stayed with fellow list member Gary Kingzett and had a great time. The ships crews were very friendly and other than the Secret Service being a little too strict about security,(and NO parking (closed) on top of the cruise ship terminals!!) I got almost every picture I wanted. Thanks again Gary! Does any one know what the Indian ship MYSORE is designed after? It was made in India and is very Russian looking with Russian weapons. I felt it looked like a Krivak III with the Helo deck, but I have never seen a Russian ship up close. The port side view appears to show camouflage, with a lighter shade showing on the funnels and a dark round edged panel on her hull near the bow. The starboard view shows a distinct light panel on the forward hull and another on the forward deckhouse. Also on the forward part of the bridge structure there appear to be lines drawn to demarcate further camouflage paint divisions. It could suggest, as already was put forward by another SMMLie, that she was in the midst of being painted. Just some thoughts. Commander Series Models, Inc I want to thank Ted Paris At Commander Series Models, Inc. for assisting me with U P mounts for my back dated 350th scale Prince of Wales. Pat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: "chisum" Subject: Re: DD-21 I'm aware of rocket assisted ordinance the Navy was researching (and other countries)(Yes laser guided). It would almost have to be because of the enormous pressure at the chamber. There exists laser guided mortar rounds and even 20mm! The Navy also was playing with the idea of saboted rounds for the 16" guns, flinging an 8" round 60 miles(over the horizon).//// With the present design of "disposable" ships, a 155mm could do great damage. You would at least have a mission kill on the target, even if you didn't sink it. Hi all, I'm very new to this world of modeling and this list, and am hoping someone can point me to a single list of all the IJN and USN 1/700 WW II plastic models currently on the market, as well as ones that may have gone out of print. I have started buying models on eBay (over 50 so far), and am hoping to find some sort of list that I can use to check off the ships that I've already got, and know what other ones are out there that I can be on the look-out for. I have looked at various on-line stores that sell models, and could put together a list if I go through all the different brands, but if someone has already done this work and has made it available, I could avoid replicating the effort. These would just be the in-print models too, I suppose, so even just a list of out-of-print ones would be helpful. In my experience so far, it does seem that there appear to be far fewer USN cruisers and destroyers available than there are IJN ones. The USN carriers and battleships seem to be common, but not the cruisers and destroyers. Is this just a reflection of market demand and model company interests? Thanks for any pointers, Ken Hi Ken, While by no means exhaustive look up my Shiplist on the APMA site under the reference section at: http://www.tac.com.au/~sljenkins/apma.htm This covers model magazine articles on ship modelling & will be updated in the next day or so, once I index the latest Plastic Ship Modeler (a HIGHLY recommended magazine). This will at least give you an idea of what kits are available. Couple problems, though. 1) Not many (0) 16" barrels in comission right now. 2) Darn few in reserve!! 3) Limited barrel life on those few remaining, and we no longer have the ability to produce more. And the number of spare barrels is also small. Especially since someone torched the spare barrels at Long Beach instead of shipping them to Fort Irwin for storage! So be happy we might have the 155mm. Hello, I haven't posted here for a while. Anyway, does anyone own Floating Drydock's Gato/Balao or Missouri Plan Books? I'm sort of tight on money right now, and I'd appreciate a short review of either. A scanned sample might be of some help, too. I've always been fascinated with plans and blueprints, but I've never bought any plans of ACTUAL ships :) Thanks, Daryl. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 27) From: "David Miller" Subject: 155mm with 60 mile range I worked with a guy with in the 80's who was working on a guided 5" shell with the Rexham(?) company. At the time he was working closely with the Navy's ordinance center at Dalhgren, VA. The shell was rocket boosted and laser guided (yes, folding fins). The idea was pinpoint, over the horizon close support. Their two major problems were guidance system reliability and the fact that there was not much room left for the stuff that goes bang! Their goal was to provide a shell that could be fired from existing weapons. Sounds like this good idea was developed into a new 155mm weapon. (LNG-SHEP)" Subject: Big E decals Rusty White said: >> It has a number of Desert Storm related markings which would place it in that time frame. << I would in no way want to criticize or dispute Rusty, in fact these decals are absolutely necessary if you want to do Tamiya's 1/350 Big E. You can get them from Tom's Modelworks (though you'll have to e-mail Tom for the info, it's not on his website). But the decals are NOT from Desert Storm. Duane includes a marking the crew painted on the #3 elevator shaft that says "Hormuz Highway Patrol" and was there in 1988-89 when the Enterprise was part of the force escorting reflagged Kuwaiti tankers and sank a couple of Iranian (I believe) gunboats. This is the period the kit represents and is also the period the low viz air wing decals Loren Perry makes was on board, so it adds a neat dimension.
