There's a good cutaway view at; http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/4289/5in38cal.html Hope this helps. Best Regards: Charlie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: JRuotsala@aol.com Subject: Re: Away All Boats One thing of interest. It has been the consensus of your readers that the APA used in Away All Boats was the Randolph. According to the American Dictionary of Fighting Ships, it was the U. S. S. SANBORN APA-193. Thought this might be of interest. Jim Ruotsala -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "John Rule" Subject: Navires & Histoires Can anyone help. I am trying to find a copy of Issue #1 of the French magazine Navires & Histoires. If anyone knows the location of a copy for sale please let me know off list. Thank you. John Rule (Welcome back Shane and Lorna from your well deserved break.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Bob Evans Subject: Re: Slightly off the subject Greetings, >> Does anyone know of a good free or at least cheap source of info on the 5'/38 twin mounts? << In Robert Sumrall's book "Sumner-Gearing-Class Destroyers, on page 95 you will find two cut a-ways showing the inside of a twin 5" MK-38 mount. Bob Evans Franciscan Hobbies http://www.franciscanhobbies.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Matthew Roving in Naval History Since I earlier posted my complaint about the changes in NAVAL HISTORY, I think it only fair to post the editor's response. Perhaps, with so many of us interested in naval history, some of us can come up with constructive suggestions to Mr. Schultz's request at the end of his e-mail. Ken Goldman THE WALRUS AND THE CARPENTER unique wood sculpture and fine scale models www.walruscarpenter.com >> From: Fred Schultz Subject: Matthew Roving in Naval History Dear Mr. Goldman: I regret that you are disappointed in our decision to initiate the Matthew Roving series. I must tell you, however, that it was not a frivolous one, and we did it for what I think are good reasons. For the survival of the magazine that you apparently value otherwise, we determined that we needed to do something--at least one thing--to appeal to a younger readership. Most of our readers are senior citizens, which is fine. But the reality is that senior citizens--many from what Tom Brokaw described as The Greatest Generation--are passing away daily in droves. We decided that we did not need to do anything drastic and that we could devote a few pages in each issue to something with a wider age appeal. If we don't maintain the numbers of readers we have, the magazine is in danger of disappearing itself. I hope that you can empathize with our position and that you will continue to support the magazine. Even if you don't read Matthew Roving, I believe that the rest of the magazine delivers what it always has. But I do wish you'd give the series a chance. You might even like it. If not, perhaps you have an alternative idea for attracting more readers. I am wide open for suggestions. With all sincerity, Fred L. Schultz Editor-in-Chief Naval History magazine << -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Enterprise beehive conversion I want to convert the Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise I have to a 1967 Vietnam era "beehive" island ship. One thing I found (or not found) is that technical drawings for the ship are not available anywhere I can find. I tried all the usual places, Taubman's, FDD, National Archives, etc., with no luck. I have left a message with the Newport News Shipyard web site in hopes to find some drawings to make the conversion as accurate as possible. If anyone has them, they do. They built it! I need to know if anyone out there possibly has some drawings to guide me with this project. I know the sponsons are different and located in different areas of the hull with different weapons. Can someone tell me what other differences beside the obvious beehive island there are on the 1967 ship? I really want to do this right because I MAY consider producing this as a conversion kit at a later date. I also need information concerning the different types of aircraft used on the big E in '67. Contact me off list if you can help with the plans. Does anyone know of any in produciton refs? Also, are there any recommendations for paints and colors? << First, the Anatomy of the Ship book is the definitive source for information on the Yamato. Unfortunately, it's currently out of print and goes consistently on eBay for over $100.00. So you will have to find someone who has a Yamato book to share some scans with you. I have a copy and if you'll contact me off list, I'll send you what you need. For the colors, I would recommend getting the Snyder and Short IJN paint chips set. It has every color you will possibly need to paint your model. >> A final query concerns rigging for WWII surface ships. I've noticed that the good models all have very nice rigging and having done WWI aircraft, I have me material preferences already, but where does one find the layouts for an accurate depic << The Yamato book will have all the rigging info you could possibly want for the ship. The Revell North Carolina kit can be obtained from Model Expo (http://www.modelexpoinc.com). I also seem to remember Shaya saying he had them in stock at Naval Base Hobbies as well. I do not know how accessable these sources would be to UK and other non-US modelers, but the kit was reissued earlier this year. Bob Leonti -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Mike Connelley Subject: Yamato references Howdy: Well, there's the Skulski book of course. As far as plans go, it has about all you could ever want, but it's photos aren't that great. Currently it fetches premium prices, but I hear it's due for re-publishing, so keep your ear to the rails. I believe that WEM is accepting pre-orders. There are also the three Gakken books available through HLJ or Pacific Front or Kitlink. These books have wonderful photos, both real photos and photos of 1/100 scale models. Those are the best ones I know of off hand. For paint colors, try the Snyder&Short paint chips. Nice colors for all IJN ships, and nicely priced. I can't remember if SYDNEY was among those discussed but its a useful article none the less. If no one in Oz can oblige with a copy contact me off list and I'd be happy to send you a copy. I suppose I could sculp a couple of jelly beans, but I'd rather start with something that looks like a helicopter. Absent that, though, rotors and stuff would be very helpful in scratch-building a couple of these birds. Thanks Ned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Nawth Cah'lyna >> Am I the only person who wept after reading the article on converting a Revell 1:570 North Carolina class to a "never to sail" model. As a 1:600'ish modeller who has converted, scrap built and 'guilded the lily' on numerous Airfix, Lindburg and Aurora warships and Liners(in military guise) I find it very frustrating to hear of a model being "lost" when here in the UK this particular model is impossible to obtain. I have laid down in my loft three Iowa's (Kangnam/Arii) one of which I will attempt to convert to a Carolina with a great deal of scrap building. If I had a Revell kit I could combine the two! << The USS North Carolina's gift shop has more Revell kits than you can shake a 5" 38 at ... I think they have a website and I'll bet real money they'd sell overseas. They're in Wilmington, Nawth Cah'lyna, an old cotton port as purty as a speckled pup ... y'all come now, heah? Ex (South) Carolinian Ned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: 5"/38 information source Steve A few summers ago my vacation/work schedule allowed me the pleasure of visiting both the North Carolina and the Massachusetts within a few weeks of each other. I say this because my memory is vague as to which ship I was on that had a complete gun house that was open for public view. I think it was the North Carolina. My suggestion is to contact the other museum ships, at a museum-to-museum level and seek information. I'm sure that one of them will have the information already at hand - or could dispatch a staff photographer to get some pix for you. Hello, I know you're probably shocked at me saying this, but I know already. "Pearl Harbor" will be a lame, lame movie. It'll be some flag-waving crap with a cheap romance thrown in. The director is reported to NOT know the difference between a destroyer and a battleship. The producer, if you want to call him that, is a true moron when it comes to filmmaking. Want more proof? Here's the guy's "film"ography: http://us.imdb.com/Name?Bruckheimer,+Jerry Good Lord! They're trusting the producer of "coyote ugly" to make an accurate movie about one of the most important events of this century?! Oh, and a little background about the "Director." A true fool.
