Bartolacci" Subject: Refueling In The Mioddle East Perhaps Andrew or someone in the group can respond to this... In 1978 when I was on the U.S.S. Julius A. Furer Mid-East/Persian Gulf cruise, we refueled at Jiddah, Abu Dhabi, Djibouti, Bahrein, but were NEVER allowed near Yemen... But what no one has mentioned in any discussion regarding U.S. Navy underway refueling, we also refueled from a British Navy auxiliary, the H.M.S. Cherryleaf. It was a different style of underway refueling, with them towing a hose and us pulling it on board to the forward refueling station, but it worked just fine. Perhaps we need to renew a few commitments to help take advantage of our allies support? Is this no longer done? Bob Bartolacci -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Konig Class Damage Actually, I found another book that may possibly have better info on the German ships at Jutland. It is "Jutland, The German Perspective" by V E Tarrant. It also so happens that this book is on special at www.HamiltonBook.com for only $12.56, for a $35 value. I highly recommend this book for any Imperial German naval fan, or any Jutland fan. Great details on the action and more maps of this event than I have ever seen. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: RhinoBones@aol.com Subject: Zhengdefu Need a little bit of help locating a couple of Zhengdefu ship kits from around the 1900s era. I don't know what the names of the ships are, but from the pictures on the side panel of a Dingyuan (DF017) box they would appear to be of the scout/light cruiser variety. The kit model numbers are DF016 and DF038. Although Zhengdefu kits are fairly common on e-Bay, I haven't seen these kits offered. Also haven't seen them offered at Hobby Web or GoFigure. Any leads of this would be appreciated. Regards, RhinoBones -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: David Lombard Subject: Re: Where are these places anyhow? >> I've often wondered about the names that Cunard used on many of it's ships, the common theme being that they ended in "ia". It appears that several of the names were regions of the Roman empire such as Aquitania (SW France), Lusitania (Portugal), and Mauretania (Morocco). These were easy to find but, where the heck is Alaunia, Andania, Antonia, Ascania, Aurania and Ausonia? Any ideas? << From a jaunt through http://www.google.com Alaunia: http://libro.uca.edu/chaytor/hac1.htm Andania: http://www.hsa.brown.edu/~maicar/Messenia.html Antonia: Currently a woman's name, so this is tough to locate. (House of) Ascania: (the Latin form of the castle of Aschersleben) You can also check http://ancienthistory.miningco.com/homework/ancienthistory/library/weekly/aa052698.htm for words with Greek and Roman origins. David Lombard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: ctroup@supanet.com Subject: RN Painted decks Apologies in advance if this has been covered before - given the level of collective knowledge of list members it probably has. I'm also hesitant as I've been away from home and haven't caught up on all the previous mailings yet, but can see that RN deck colours have been discussed recently. Anyway, while I was away I picked up a copy of "Navi e Marinai Italiani nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale" by Elio Ando and Erminio Bagnasco (1999 reprint of second edition of 1981). On page 200 there's an aerial photograph which according to the caption is a German reconnaissance photo of HMS Nelson taken at about 9.50 am on 12 August 1942 in the Central Mediterranean (how's that for precision?) in which it looks as if the main deck is painted in a camouflage pattern. Was that the case? Does anyone have any more details, or know of other examples? I have a vague memory of seeing photos of RN cruisers with camouflaged decks but off the top of my head can't recall which ones. Colin Troup -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Watrtrck@aol.com Subject: Re: Tamiya 350th Arizona Model Forgive me for bringing this up so late, I dont get to hit the Email as often as I would like. But I was thinking the same way Ed Barrnet was when he switched hats and talked about the PR asspects of Tamiya doing a large scale Arizona. If they put something in the kit to show rememberance and respect to the crew and ship. If Tamiya did this I think they would first be creating a "healing" and a marketing masterstroke. If they feel this model would be bad taste or something then maybe do a counterpart to by doing a Yamoto outfitted as she was for her last stand with something in the box showing remembrence and respect etc......... I am primarily an aircraft and Submarine modeler but I cant think of a better way to show respect than a high quality, large scale model that we all know Tamiya can do. (No disrespect to the resin folks.) A big box with stunning boxart, a frameable certificate or a 1/700th Arizona as she looked sitting on the bottom etc, and a 1/350th MASTERPIECE of a kit, well put me in for 2, one to display unbuilt in it's box and one to build. Now can I R/C this thing?........ And since we're on the subject where is the big new acurrate I400 submarine model that would sell like hotcakes? Well there isnt one, and that is something the Japanese kit manufacturers should be all over. Mike P.S. Anyone contacted Tamiya about this Arizona thing except for the gentleman that visited the folks at Tamiya? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Watrtrck@aol.com Subject: Re: Tamiya Arizona >> Emotions still run high on the subject. The USS Arizona Memorial Vistitors Center sells a number of model kits, but none are manufactured in Japan because of visitor complaints. << I wonder if you can buy a B-29 kit in Hiroshima? Has that stopped anybody from manufacturing the kit? Foley Hi Guy's Here is my questions: Does anybody know about H.M.S. Foley? I know it was a WW11 Frigate (I Think) and also What was the Ships crest? It would also be interesting to know if there are any photo's of her, and even better a Model but I guess that is to much to ask!! Again thank you all for a great list Regards Martin Foley mailto:naval@wannsee.co.za -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "S Sachsen" Subject: removing old styrene glue with Autumn here, I am gearing up for my winter modeling project which will be the restoration of my cat-destroyed model. I have rather easily disassebled what was left of the hull and superstructure, but there are still some parts that I need to separate that had been heavily glued with tube glue of yore. Is there a product that will disolve this glue without destroying the plastic? or will I have to carefully pare it all away with a hobby knife? any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks, s Hi Shirley, I've been told that putting a model in the freezer will make the old glue brittle & it'll come apart fairly easily. Can anyone confirm this, as I've yet to try it with my old kits yet??. There are two listed in the what's new section on the same day! BTW, I wonder if the model of the USS Cole suffered any shock damage the other day. Heard offhand that the ship is taking on water again, but they hope to sail her at least to a forward base (Bahrain? Diego Garcia?) under her own power and complete the preliminary repairs there. Where of we have assets in the area anymore capable of lifting a DDG? IIRC, we moved an AFD to Diego when Subic was closed. Anybody know for sure and can talk about it?
