Only Edinburgh had the bow fitting - and to the best of my knowledge she still retains this though she now has the standard Phalanx either side of stack John E -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Blubber Pud" Subject: Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise detail kits Hi, I would like to know if anyone has information on the "GMQ a/c weapons" set that Fred Heil mentions in his writing on the recently posted pictures of his Enterprise on the Warship website. Info like where it available, what is included and price would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jason -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: Raise the Hunley sank Sorry, RhinoBones, not to belabor the point about the merits (demerits) of "Raising the Hunley" on the History Channel, but the program did not even begin to deliver on its title's promise. There was nothing about the engineering feat of designing and building the lift truss, nothing about the jurisdictional disputes that threatened the project, nothing about what was discovered underwater other than a statement that there are differences between the real thing and the displayed "replica", nothing about the original crane problems, nothing about how a U.S. salvage company tried to hijack the recovery by invoking an obscure provision of U.S.maritime law, nothing about how that was thwarted, etc. Aside from the history of the vessel itself, the story of raising CSS Hunley could have made for an engrossing hour and on a limited budget. Keeping the cost down is no excuse for a markedly inferior program. Changing the subject to RhinoBones request: Though I don't have a lead on who carries the kits, the Zengdefou kit of Ting Yuan is a toy, but is reasonably accurate, in general terms, and the potential exists to create a decent model out of it if you are willing to put in the work required - slightly better than scratch building the whole thing. It sounds like a fascinating vessel. All my searches turn up several hundred resorts and hotels, and innumerable fish stories! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Ian MacCorquodale" Subject: Tell me more Hi SMMLies, I would like to know more about this Lee 1/300 scale Perry with the Exocet fit. Where abouts are the exocets mounted? And this mysterious 1/350 Arleigh Burke Class, does anyone know which Chinese company makes it? BTW, In yesterdays post, I made a mistake in the adress for the Photo Tours of the German/French task group. :-o http://www.geocities.com/macdale_2000/Lutjens.html My apologies. I am presently working on a Photoset of the USS Ross, with aerial, Dockside, and on board series, about 70 images in total. Should be ready at the weekend. Cheers, Ian http://www.geocities.com/macrachael/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Re: Raise the Hunley sank I have no problem with the program itself. Nice historical perspective of the Hunley. That's exactly what I expect to see on the History Channel. But when the name of the program is "Raise the Hunley," gosh, for some reason I expect to see more than 30 seconds seeing it raised! I'm not hard to please. If the program would have been called, "Mystery of the Hunley," or "The Hunley, Then and Now" or some other creative name like that I wouldn't have any problem with it. I also wouldn't have watched the program. It was obviously named what it was to suck in folks interested in seeing the sub as it looks today without showing anything of the kind. Deceptive advertising if I ever heard it. As I said, I enjoyed the historical perspective, but I already knew that. I wanted and was expecting to see something new. All because of the title. Just a little while ago, there were several posts regarding the 1:350 Essex Class kit where the comment "just think of the possiblities for Resin Conversions!" was made... My question is - Are there any of these conversions readily available for the 1:700 scale kits? I'd be interested in seeing the following in 1:700 myself: SB-27A islands, SCB125 angle flight decks & hurricane bows the 27C deck edge lift Boxer Class Island Modifications (enclosed bridge) or the Valley Forge type Island modification (different?)... Did I miss any thing? I seem to remember a company that did something like this (Nautilus? maybe), are they still around or does anyone else do something like this? Thanks! cn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: stillmo@mb.sympatico.ca Subject: Re: USS Cole I wonder if they are gonna put the marines back aboard the carriers now after the USS COLE disaster. I can only imagin a CVN and any other high value asset dropping its hook in a foreign port--with manned machine guns on every quarter thoughout the port call stay. Sure gonna make it tough for the ship lovers and ship photogs out there who want to come in for a closer look. This could happen in any port, domestic or foreign. Any thoughts? Having just resurfaced from a dive on the Tirpitz wreck-site I can safely say she's not grey. She's red. Rust red. And what's left of her is not a pretty sight either... Sorry.. couldn't help it.. ;-) Got the inspiration to pick up my Heller Tirpitz and the associated GMM detail set and have a look-through at least... whether it'll actually make me start assembling plastic is uncertain.. but I guess I'm back in the modelling world again... whoohooo! :-) Here's to you all, even those attending the Telford-thing. As if I'm envious! I got myself the model of the Konig and am happy with it. Even though I will take months to paint and put it together. On the point of ICM building an Essex class carrier... Ok I would be willing to buy one. In fact as long as someone would build a 1/350 or 1/400 Essex I would be happy to get it if it was of the quality of ICM or Tamiya. I already got the wife to let me get the Hood and Chokai from ICM when ever they finally put them on the market. So does anyone one think Tamiya will ever make another new type 1/350 scale ship or will ICM become the new Konig (German for King) on the 1/350 warship market. I was also wondering does ICM answer e-mail or do they just not like me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Subject: Re: SMMLcon Frisco style >> Following our meeting last weekend it is official - the USS Hornet will be hosting the SMML Conference 2001 on April 20, 21, and 22. In in conjunction with the conference, the local IPMS chapter will be holding a contest aboard the Hornet on the 22nd. The tentative schedule is: << >> Sounds like a winner, I'm marking my calendar. I will warn you however that you guys on the left coast have bog shoes to fill as SMML-Con II << Putting it on my calendar, too. Finally, something on the West Coast.
