Is there any news anywhere about the recovery of bits and pieces of a Zodiac, the terrorists, end the outboard motor? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Frank Allen Subject: Drop the Hunley! Can't we just stop this current thread regarding the Hunley programme? It really isn't productive. Yes, the program was a bit of a let down, but it was still nice to see the History Channel playing something besides Hitler/World War 2 programmes for once! Serisouly though, can we just drop this rather stupid thread and get back to the point of this list...ship modelling? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: RhinoBones@aol.com Subject: Re: Zhengdefu & Hunley >> Aside from the history of the vessel itself, the story of raising CSS Hunley could have made for an engrossing hour and on a limited budget. Keeping the cost down is no excuse for a markedly inferior program. Changing the subject to RhinoBones request: Though I don't have a lead on who carries the kits, the Zengdefou kit of Ting Yuan is a toy, but is reasonably accurate, in general terms, and the potential exists to create a decent model out of it if you are willing to put in the work required - slightly better than scratch building the whole thing. << I expect that there are one or more authoritative projects in the works which will bring out the true picture of the Hunley. Civil War history, of course, will need to be revised to incorporate the findings and that information will be publicly available. I project that Scientific American, National Geographic, maybe both and maybe other respected periodicals will have feature articles on the Hunley in the coming year. As for the Zhengdefu kits . . . yes they certainly are toys and therein lies the challenge. I've accumulated several of their turn of the century kits (thank you to several people) and they are all very primitive. Should be fun. An interesting site. Chris Neel wrote, regarding Essex-class conversions: >> My question is - Are there any of these conversions readily available for the 1:700 scale kits? I'd be interested in seeing the following in 1:700 myself: << Oooh, boy. I would *dearly* love to see these kinds of things out there (said she, who converted the Hasegawa CV-19 into the Hornet c. 1969), but I'm not sure how one could do it economically. It's more than just a new island, an angled deck or an enclosed bow; there's also those pesky hull bulges, which I'm not sure you could create lasting (and easily-attached, or that would hold their shapes) versions of in resin. Maybe vac-formed plastic, but in resin it might be a bear. Not to mention that you'd essentially need new hull sides above the hangar deck, since (a) so much was added to these ships in the -27A/C and -125 refits, and (b) the port side of the Hasegawa kit (especially aft, where the roller doors are) is inaccurate anyway. To do a worthwhile conversion you'd be better off just casting a whole new hull -- and then if you do that, you're just as well to cast the whole rest of the ship, too. That conversion is an awful lot of work. Maybe someone could figure it out, but I'd be stumped -- not to mention just how many different variations there were of modernized CV-9s, and then variations upon variations. You'd have to pick one ship, essentially, and stick with it -- if you could figure out how to do it. By the time you were through you'd have spent $100-$150 on essentially overhauling a $20 kit from which you'd have used only about three or four parts. Better to just start with a whole new resin kit engineered from the start as a modernized Essex. Conversions for LPH versions, however, might be a cool idea. I'd definitely buy some of those if anyone did them -- the island with the new funnel caps and box for the pole mast, plus the missing bridge level, etc. An Antietam angled-deck conversion would be cool, too. Anyone? Shane wrote: >> Not fair tempting us like that :-((. I had a chance to Sneak-Peak to the brand new Tom's Modelworks Bismarck class, Nagato & Fuso classes and the Kongo class brass sets. Bert McDowell, who said that, he is finally subscribed to SMML (welcome Bert), brought them to the show. The only word to describe these sets is "beautiful". These are the finest from Tom's to date yet and he tried relief etching first time with the Bismarck set. Well done again. Sami Arim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Wannsee" Subject: WW11 RN Ships Still afloat Hi All, Having seen in Janes a few years ago that the Egyptian Navy still had a Wild Swan Destroyer at Alex and that a Bangor class was in Southern Africa I wonder if anybody knows of any other examples in the world? I once read of a ships lifeboat from a WW1 German battleship in North Wales but could find no trace of it, also I believe that a few hulks of MTB's survive on the South Coast of England in various Creeks. Can anybody shed anymore light on these boats, Thanks in advance Martin Foley mailto:naval@wannsee.co.za -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Katherine Reddy" Subject: Model Art book I would be very interested in obtaining the "Model Art" book. Please let me know where to send my check - or whatever payment method you prefer. Thanks, Bob Reddy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Craig R Bennett Subject: CV-45 Valley Forge bridge Hi Guys I have a idea to share on making the bridge of the Valley Forge CV-45 or LPH possible. Since the bridge on the 3 ships Valley Forge, Princeton and Boxer were just slightly modifed WW2 carrier design. When I was building my Valley Forge of the Korean War. I noticed that the 1/720th scale Revell Masseschuetts or Alabama kit bridges seem to ressemble those carriers window layout. So I took that part from the kits being number 9. Now this the bridge window area. You have to cut off the side and lower wall sections on it. This will leave you with the window section. On the Essex class kit 1/700 from Hasegawa I added them on to the bridge. It gives the general apperance of the Valley Forge. But to do it right, after experimenting with the idea you should try this sand the bridge window area down to make contact just below the windows. Then cut off the front curve of B-3. Make sure to dryfit the idea with whole pieces first because to set up these windows to align with a walk way as well that goes along the left side to part C-4. This may be hard for a beginner so you try the way I first describe, but this may be a possiblity. I hope this helps. Caroline put the photo on screen at Telford this morning... Boy, it was worth the wait! Oh Shane, you should have been there! Duane was selling his Big E decals and he also had some D & S on the Big E that he'd found in Taiwan, of all places! Both he and John Snyder were in their uniforms too! I also looked in on David Parkins and examined the Flower Class Corvette sets. They are fantastic. No other word for them... He's packaged them as separate sets so that you can spread the purchase over a couple of years, as the kit is built up... I'm glad he's taken this approach because all the sets add up to over £280! Mind you, all you use from the kit is the hull, the prop and rudder and the funnel to use as a former for the brass overlay! If you invest in the whole lot, you'll have one heck of a project to work on... Best wishes, Chris Hi Chris, Did you say hello to the old fart ;-þ BTW, did you pick up the GMM 1/700 German Navy set?? USCG(ret) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: stillmo@mb.sympatico.ca Subject: Re: Essex mods To Chris Neel, regarding Essex mods. I've been talking to Joe Damato about retooling the ORISKANY which he has been doing, and selling those beautifully schulpted resin islands separately, thus saving us tons of scratchbuilding time. The other island mods with the enclosed bridges would be a great idea. Providing new bows and angle deck sponsons would be a ton of work, and I think if you just be patient, in this lifetime you may see a 27 Charlie from Modelwerks---its advertised on their yet building web page, so its no secret. The O Boat kit is a breathtaking kit, and has been reviewed in a two part article in past issues of Plastic Ship Modeller, by moi. Whats really lacking is the extensive photo etch fret for the starboard side elevator.
