Folks: I hope Mike Dunn, our intrepid webmaster, will forgive me for omitting his name when dishing out thanks to Shane for keeping SMML going. BOTH deserve lavish praise for their efforts in support of SMML! And while we're at it, thanks also to Lorna Jenkins for putting up with all this! THANKS MIKE AND LORNA! It comes with all of the above and more. You can get an after market catapult from any one of several photoetch vendors. << You've got to be careful here on the catapult issue, the 3 Fletchers were fitted with a Type A Mark IV catapult which was very similar to the version carried by the Omaha CL's. Most of the PE vendors (and I could be wrong here) only have the Type P Mark VI which was fitted to the CA's and BB's in the late 30's and into the 40's. There is a marked visual difference in the outward appearance. I know this really doesn't help much, sorry. As far as the rest, Al is correct, Bluejacket should be able to fix you up. Try typing in the authors name only, on any of the search engines that are on the net. I have found much better results with this method. Some of the search engines are: abebooks.com bibliofind.com bookfinder.com There are many others, just go to the World Wide Web and do a general search for "Used Books". One of the great deals I saw was a copy of Raven & Roberts (that is how I typed in the authors name(s)) "British Battleships of World War Two" for only $65.00 US, which is a real bargain, at Columbia Trading Co. Try it, it a blast! Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Wiswiesser plans (Steve is right) In the past Steve Wiper has warned us of plans drawn by Mr. Wiswiesser, stating that he discovered inaccuracies in them when compared to official drawings. I'm sorry to say I have to second Steve's warning. I am currently preparing a set of CAD drawn plans of the Adams circa 1960. I have the BU ships drawings and a friend mine loaned me an Adams drawing drawn by Wiswiesser. Remembering Steve's warning, I began to carefully compared the two. Keep in mind I'm not being picky when comparing the drawings. I am a professional CAD technician and I understand there can be small and insignificant differences between two sets of drawings and not affect the final outcome (model). Also, the Wisswiesser plans were for the Adams circa '62 to '64 while my BU Ships drawings are circa 1960. However, the hull didn't change while some of the deck and superstructure drawings did over the years. I found some GLARING errors on the Wiswiesser hull plans when comparing them to the BU Ships drawings. Most notably were the complete omission of some lines in the hull drawings while other compound curve lines on the hull drawing were WAY off from the BU Ships plans. Other lines were drawn squared off, while on the BU Ships drawing were noticeably round. I noticed all this when comparing just the hull drawings! So I want to back Steve up here (not that he needs it). Take any Wiswiesser drawings with a BIG block of salt. If at all possible, get the BU Ships plans or plans produced from BU Ships drawings such a the General Booklet of Plans. Most of these can be obtained from Floating Dry-dock (BU or G series plans). This may have been a one time occurrence, but I won't take that chance in the future. I take no pleasure from knocking someone's product here or anywhere else. However, if it's wrong it's wrong (not just a little wrong), and I felt this list should be aware of these shortcomings. I recently saw some very ironic postings about the Charles de Gaulle carrier problems. It is true that this new carrier has some problems, but no so important as to compare her to the former Soviet Navy. 1 - It took 12 years to build this new ship, but it must be said that long time is because mainly of the many delays imposed by the politics in a futile attempt to save money. Results? A long time of construction, a very frustated French Navy, and an incredible increase of costs due to this policy! 2 - The only structural problem the carrier had, was vibrating rudders a certain speeds. This was easily cured during her first stay in the dockyards. No more problems of this type are now remaining. 3 - The lenghtening of the deck was only to ease the maneuver of the E-2C under extreme circonstances. These were: catching of N° 4 wire, at night under bad weather. This airplane is so costly that the French Navy prefered to add some iron at the end of the ship than loosing at sea an E-2C! 4 - About the nuclear section, the Navy had to upgrade it, because the safety rules in application when the ship was designed (in the early 80's ), were reinforced regarding the European legislation and the Navy has to comply with them. 5 -Some designing was done with the catwalks, because they had a tendancy to be wet in rough weather. 6 - The broken propeller blade is maybe the worst aspect, but is due mainly to the inability of the supplier. The files that were supposed to be burnt are in fact in good shape as they were stored in another section of the factory, and the French officials are inspecting them. 7 - The washing machine problem is purely fictional and would have been a good April's Fools joke! During her shakedown cruise and before the propeller problem, everything worked perfectly and the CIC of the French Navy sent a congratulation message to the carrier. A very good book (somewhat expensive) has just appeared over here and shows well all the innovatives aspects of the CDG. Speaking of irony, I remember well a self jamming B-1 bomber that gave some embarrassement to the USAF and costed far more to the US taxpayer than the problems of the CDG will cost to the French one! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2001 to everybody! There is a photo taken amidships showing a funnel with some counter-shading (White) under a small platform with the light gray continuing down from there. I believe the light gray to just that (5L). The darker color is the problem for me. Some sources declared it to be 5N/navy blue; an old working associate of mine (Who served as an electrician aboard the San Diego) said he thought it was black. Some photos show that much contrast to make black believable. I'm not sure I could trust my friend's memory to be accurate after 50 years, but that's the colors I used on his model (Black & 5L). Maybe someone else has some other ideas on the subject; let's see. Bert McDowell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "O'Connor" Subject: Holidays SMMLies Here's wishing all of you out there in SMML-land a great Holiday season. I hope you all have a wonderful time with family, and return in the new year with more shipmodeling stories to tell. As for the list, I agree with the posting the other day about eveyone doing a kit review for the list- a great idea to help all listmembers out with making decisions on buying kits. Finally, thanks for the communication about what really happened with the Russians and the carrier- I figured there had to be another side to the story. Now lets hear about thier photos of the Trident submarine missile room. Bob O'connor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: JAG 1/700 US Coast Guard Bear Class I don't believe anybody has discussed the JAG Bear Class Cutter, so I figured I'd shed some light on this model. I just picked it up today and am very pleased thus far by the quality of the castings. Although the model is small (4-3/4" long by 11/16" wide) it looks like it will build into a nice little model. The hull is cast almost flawlessly, but the resin did thin out on the bridge's walkway, leaving a tiny see-through area. But that shouldn't be too hard to fix with a small drop of CA. Other than that the hull is cast very well, as are the add-on pieces. There are about 20 or so other resin pieces, including the retractable hangar, ships boats, forward gun, mainmast, and HH60 Jayhawk helicopter. I was especially impressed with the Jayhawk helicopter, as it is a little kit unto itself. The brass fret is superb, especially with the landing pad nets and the fine railings. The decal sheet provides the racing stripes, Coast Guard hull markings, 2 flags, a few extra Coast Guard logos, and names and numbers for 13 ships of the class. The names are finely done, unlike many ships where the name scales out to be about 10 feet tall. All in all it looks like a nice little model, not too complex to build, and a welcome addition to US Coast Guard modelers. Now I've got to get my hands on a Hamilton class. Cheers Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: GrafSpee34@aol.com Subject: German Flag Signal JOT DORA Somebody asked a while back what the German flag signal "Jot Dora" means. It is the code for "Open Fire" and also the German navy man's vernacular for "the smoking lamp is lit". Cheers Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: "Malcolm N. Waite" Subject: SMML/Acrylics Hi Kelvin I read your bit on SMML I to have discovered the wonders of acrylic retarder, I have also been baffled by all those bottles on the bottom row. You would think it would help sales if they actually told you what they do rather than assuming you have just left Art Collage! I once asked an assisted what some of them did, it was a bit like asking a computer expert how to switch the computer on. You get the answer in the first line but the next half hour sweeps it all away from your brain! I left the shop with a full set of bottles and a confused brain. I can also recommend Gloss Gel Medium it's great for glazing windows in small scale buildings and vehicles. Paint the window matt black dry brush with a bit of white, once dry paint with the medium, it looks very good. Don't panic thought it comes out of the tube a creamy white but dry's clear, trust me. I'm seriously considering moving to the San Francisco bay area after my current (temp) job runs it's course. After having lived here in Texas nearly all of my life, I've come to realize it's time to ship out to the coast. To put it bluntly, this burg is slowly sapping the life out of me. I've been wanting to move to San Francisco since '88, and if I don't get out of here soon, I'm afraid I never will. I confess...I'm positively, certifiably, insane. My funds are minimal, my job skills are limited, and I've never lived out on my own in my life. But there comes a time when a we all have to break away from our roots to find out if we can make it or not. Kicking oneself out of the nest over 1900 miles may seem to be a bit on the extreme side, but based on my past history, it's going to take a make it or break it situation for me to succeed in this goal. Insanity in this case is the only thing that is going to keep me alive. So to those of you who live in the bay area, any suggestions, advise, and/or help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. *Please send all replies to this OFFLIST!!!* Derek Wakefield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Please buy his books >> OK Steve; Which one?? << Chuck, Please feel free to check them out on my web site @ www.classicwarships.simplenet.com Then go to one of many dealers nation, and for that matter, world wide, listed on the "Where to Buy" page.
