Yet again PSM has delivered the goods with outstanding articles by Falk Pletscher (ICM 1/350 Konig - a must for anyone building this kit), Loren Perry (Academy/Minicraft 1/350 Titanic), Ray Bean (Corsair Armarda 1/700 USS Garcia) & yet another fabulous diorama featuring the WEM 1/700 HMS Penelope by Chris Drage (where's that bloody finger vice mate). Dan Jones continues his look at merchant ships with an article on Motor Ships between the wars. Ray Bean gives us a photofeature on the USS Albany & sister USS Columbus. Plus the usual sections by Ray Bean (NAVINFOTEL) & Paul Jacobs (One to one hundred scale) & review sections. I have to add my voice to Loren's (from a few weeks ago), in that the photo quality keeps getting better & better. It's nearly up to the standard which the writing (which imho is by far more important) deserves. As an Asst editor of a print model magazine myself, I can really appreciate the hassles in getting good quality photo results on a limited budget. I especially like the addition of pictures of the photoetched and resin add-on products reviewed. My only reservation is an article which does seem to blur the lines between a modelling article & an advertisment. This is however a personal preference which may not be so important for other readers and apart from this the article is excellent and highly recommended as is the whole magazine. PSM subscription infomation is available from Dan Jones at mailto:dhjonespsm@juno.com I subscribe to PSM through WEM which as far as I know, still the only PSM vendor to accept credit card payment. Regards, Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Jon Warneke Subject: Help with Skywave LST-2 kit >> I need some help with the Skywave LST-2 kit (1:700 scale). There is a large bandstand (larger than the others) at the stern for a stern gun. Unfortunately the gun which is provided with the kit is just a plastic blob. I want to use a gun from the Skywave detail set for the USN but which gun should it be? A 5"/38, a 3" perhaps? Can anyone help? << In the research I did for our 1/350 scale LST kit, there were three different fits that I found. These ships were either fitted with a 3"50 cal. single mount, a twin 40mm mount, or a quad 40mm mount in the large tub on the stern. I could find no definitive reference than any LST was equipped with a 5"38 cal. open single, and considering the amount of extra equipment a gun like this requires, seriously doubt that one could be mounted on the stern of an LST. Depending on the exact ship you model will determine what sort of AA outfit you'll need to have for your kit, since there were three distinct landing craft fits (2, 4, and 6 davits), two versions of the LST (ramp or elevator forward), and numerous AA fits ranging from 20mm and a 3"50 for the bow and stern, to an all 20mm and 40mm fit using single, twin, and quad 40mm mounts. Jon Warneke Commander Series Models, Inc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Marc Flake Subject: Bending PE - Submarine style I'm looking at three 1/350 scale and four 1/700 scale submarine kits that I will soon be bending PE for in the near future. Subs appear to have a distinctly different type of railing for some of their weaponry that reqires the upper rails to be wider than the lower rails. Last year, acting on suggestions provided by this list, I went out and purchsed some nice bamboo skewers to shape my cagemast PE. I was wondering if there was some handy gizmo for bending submarine rail PE. Marc -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Graham Bird" Subject: FIUME colours 1941 Can anyone help with the colour scheme that RN Fiume was wearing at the time of her sinking? A review of the Tauro build in Plastic Ship Modeller merely included a criticism of the Tauro paint scheme and turned into a Gorizia build. Another PSM piece on Italian colours suggested that Fiume was wearing an experimental scheme (the same as Littorio's?). Can the colours/pattern shown in 'Regia Marina' for Littorio be used - or is something else required? Many thanks. Dr.Graham Bird -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Robert Litchfield" Subject: 1/700 Waterline Series Guide Book Does anyone know how I can obtain a copy of this guide in the U.K. Thank you, Bob Litchfield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Ramires, Filipe C" Subject: Z Class Destroyers main guns Hello list I have just bought in an hobby shop were at Colchester the Tamiyas/Skywave RN "O" class and the OKM "Z" class destroyers. The models look fine to me (of course they will be much more detailed) but I think there is a small problem with the "Z" class main guns. I believe that the 5.9' guns are smaller to this scale! Does anybody knows of this problem and can point me some solutions??? Thanks in advance. Regards Filipe C. Ramires Colchester, UK (Why it is snowing!?! This was not in my plans). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "J. London" Subject: Re: A couple of good books For those with a taste for naval humour try and find Captain Jack Broome's "Make a Signal" and "Make Another Signal", and Geoffrey Lowis' "Fabulous Admirals". Both probably long out of print but may be available second hand. My favourite story from the latter concerned a midshipman who nursed a particular hatred for the Gunnery Officer. He was also an accomplished mimic. Finding himself near the voice pipe on the bridge he called up the latter and, immitating the Captain's voice gave him one of the biggest dressing downs he could muster. As he put the bung back in place he turned and, to his horror, found the Captain standing behind him. After looking at him for a second or two the Captain said "My sentiments exactly, me boy!". For the record the "Guns" never did know it wasn't the Captain who had called him up but neither did the midshipman go unscathed. Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Joao Andrade Guerra" Subject: Skywave LST Question Thanks to all for your help. From the answers I got to my query it appears that indeed it should be either a 3"/50 or a single/double 40mm Bofors depending on the ship and the time in question. Joao Andrade Guerra Lisboa - PORTUGAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Tom & Carolyn Harrison" Subject: Re: Atlantis Early last year I was working with the returning Aurora founders and their new company Lost Aurora Plastics Company. They were going to reissue the Atlantis kit, but due to health problems inside the family the company never got going again. I had the chance to review one and make recommendations as to possibly upgrading the molds, reworking the masters, possible etched brass in the kit and so on. I would say by today standards the kit was clunky, the length and width were of different scales. However, at the high price the kit goes for I don't think I would want to build the kit, I would put it in the collector kit category only. If the kit was cheaper and with some scratch building you could make a good representation of the Atlantis. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Bob Pearson" Subject: Pennant number R16 Hi all, I had an enjoyable morning at the local archives going through their ship and aircraft photos. Lots of really cool stuff there . . including a visit from HMS Curlew in 1923 and HMS Dragon in 1930. .. and some cagemasted USN BBs. There are also 30+ shots of the 1921 Round the World Flight in harbour here (including 'Seattle' being salvaged), but these are badly faded and I am going to try and borrow these pics to scan and fix up. (fingers crossed). Anyway, there are also three shots of an RCN destroyer here in 1948. She has the pennant number of R16 and I am unable to find it listed in any of my references. I think it is either HMCS Crescent or Crusader. .. although Sioux and Algonquin are also possibilities .. anyone able to help me let them know what it is? Dave Judy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Christian Griesser" Subject: I need any information about the GATO-class! Hi everyone, I think about to build a model from a GATO-class submarine in scale 1/35. And therefore I would like to receive any information about plans, pictures, books, painting, modifikations, uniforms, daily life on those subs, etc... Thanks, Chrigi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Lump518176@aol.com Subject: Re: Essex Camo Essex entered service in 1943, not 1942. She intially carried MS-21 until her only wartime refit during April 1944. She was repainted into MS-32 6-10D, which consisted of Dull Black and 5-L Light Gray (the only Essex to carry this scheme). This scheme was carried until at least Nov. 1944, when she was repainted into Ms-21 again. Also during her "dazzle scheme" days, her flight deck was stained "standard Blue stain" and carried black numerals and black dash lines. Elevators were outlined in yellow. Geoff Hanson posts: >> One of the many problems with trying to deduce colours from Black and white photos taken at the turn of the century and probably up to the late 1930s is that all photography in those day was done with Orthochromatic film, this was only really sensitive to light at the blue end of the spectrum. << While this is correct in so far as the effect of Ortho film when photographing colours at the warm end of the spectrum, it is not true that *all* photgraphy was done usining ortho film until the late 1930's. In fact, panchromatic film sensitive to red end colours was in use prior to WW1 *though* not widespread, so the *majority* of period photos are probably taken on Ortho. The effect of this is to make any attempt to deduce colour from B&W photographs without significant supporting evidence from (for example) eye witness accounts, surviving documents or surviving artifacts a matter of guesswork. Incidentally, colour photography was also used during WW1, the Australian War Memorial museum being in possession of some quite famous ones Shane (the elder) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Robert & Rose Brown Subject: KM Konigsberg Hi there: I'm putting together the Samek Konigsberg, the Kreigsmarine 'K' class cruiser from World War II. There is no planking scribed on the deck so I was wondering does anybody know if these cruisers had wood decking, or if they were metal, which of the paint samples from Snyder and Short would I use for the deck colour? Also, were the hulls a different colour than the superstructure? Thanks, Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: Robert & Rose Brown Subject: USS Phoenix Hi there: At the risk of rehashing all the Pearl Harbour paint schemes again, I have 2 questions regarding USS Phoenix on December 7, 1941. 1) She was painted in Measure 11, according to the USN ship camouflage site. Would the decks have been in 20B Deck Blue, or would they still have been natural wood, being as how it was still peace time (at least until 7:55AM)?. 2) What were the colours of the observation planes she carried? Many thanks, Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: "Henry T Chen" Subject: 1/700 USS Yorktown Hi all, I'm thinking about building USS Yorktown using Tamiya's Enterprise kit. I know they are in the same class, but I wonder if any modifications should be made? Can anyone give me some clues. Thanks in advance. Henry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: ATLANTIS Beware of that Aurora kit of Atlantis ! ! ! As far as I know, this has nothing - repeat: nothing - to do with the German WW II raider. It was just a "generell" merchant ship they sold as Atlantis. There was also an Atlantis offered by HP-Models, but I don't know this kit. I even don't know if it ever came out. I only know that HP has a model of a merchant ship which is sold under several names and designations with minor alterations to the basic kit. So you'd better have a close look to it before you buy any.
