As you can guess, in Mexico is dificult to get FSM not to mention the old issues. Thanks for any help. Last I heard, the Foundation had a last gasp effort going to save her. Maybe you would rather contribute funds to that than for photos of her end? Golly, but I hope they're successful. On a similar note, last I heard Oriskany was docked somewhere in Texas awaiting final disposition. Anybody have any more current info? Steve Allen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Jana & Pavel" Subject: Personal Request Dear SMML'ies, To all members who take the time to reply to questions and requests, I would like to thank personally for making this list and our hobby so pleasant and fun. I have a short request to any member who is a professor, lecturer or involved in any university in the USA who would be willing to pass on some information regarding these universities. In order not to tie up this list could anyone willing to help me, please contact me off list. I will then ask them directly. Thank you Regards Pavel -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re: Life of a Ship In regards to previous comments about "The Life Of A Ship", that concept was well delineated in an old poem, "The Deacon's Wonderful One Horse Shay". The Deacon's wonderful one horse shay was so carefully designed that it all fell apart on the very same day. Nothing new here. But I don't know which is worse, having it all fall apart at once, or having just one minor but irreplaceable component fail, and you have to scrap the whole thing because of a ten cent item. That's sort of what happened when the space shuttle tragically exploded, it was because of a simple o-ring that failed. Another space vehicle (unmanned) failed because a" fail-safe" switch was installed backwards. I find that last one to be incredible. If anyone has this kit for sale , I would be much obliged Jan Muntz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "John Rodriguez Asti" Subject: Heller 1/400 Arromanches Hi all: I am searching in the web the Heller's model of the French aicraft carrier Arromanches. Does anybody knows where I can get this model on the web?. Any help will be very appreciated. John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "John W. Wressell" Subject: Surcouf vs. M1 I enjoyed George Hackett's comments on an engagement between the M1 and Surcouf. I gather M1's main armament was not trainable and could only elevate. Based on that I might pick her 12 incher at long range and Surcouf's twin 8's in a close duel. Despite the very sad happenings at Oran, at least these two never came to blows even if it could have happened. To my knowledge the wreck of Surcouf has never been found. There is a very fine model of the Surcouf in the Musee de la Marine in Paris. Took a good look at it this past November as I'm building a model of her myself. I think this is one of the three finest marine museums in the world (National Maritme and the Washington Navy Yard plus the Smithsonian are the other two) and some of the exhibits are the finest I've ever seen. For those who haven't been there, try and see it. Douglas Reeman wrote a book about Surcouf which I have somewhere in paperback. I believe it is called "Surface With Daring". Like all of his efforts it is very enjoyable reading. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "DUCKMAN" Subject: LACQUER THINNER THANX FOR THE TIP ON THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF THIS STUFF.
