I am looking for this to build so I will consider a started one as long as everything is there. Thanks Hub Plott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Hanger deck cats I remember there is some old black and white movie staring Don Ameche who was the air officer of a essex class carrier - anyway they show the hanger deck catapult and a plane being launched. Don't remember if it was real or a "special effects" Now you got me thinking - I wonder if there are any tell-tale weld marks on the HORNET's hanger bay just aft of the forward elevator where the catapult used to be? Hey, Shirley if you read this would you check it out? Folks: Just a quick, heartfelt thanks to all those who responded to my queries regarding hobby/book shops in southern Florida, and the HMAS Sydney (no connection there). SMMLies are a great group of people. Thanks again! Yours truly, Mike Eisenstadt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: royrichey@att.net Subject: Gneisenau Need some references for the battleship Gneisenau. Doing a 1/96 model of her with the 38.0cm refit. Hull almost finished and superstructure roughed out. Stuck on the hanger installed at Brest in 1942. Desperately need a decent photo of the hanger area. I saw in the archives that I'm not the first on this subject. Help, please. (also doing a 1/400 Heller conv at the same time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Chris Neel" Subject: Re: unbuilt kits Ok - I don't feel so bad now... I currently have 310 unbuilt kits - 116 which are ships (1:700 scale) and 197 being aircraft kits - a goodly portion being Naval Aviation kits... I am hoping to build all (most?) of these someday in the not to distant future... I am just now finishing up on the garage project with the dedicated upstairs hobby room (remember that thread?)... all that is left is finishing the upstairs insulation and panelling and the shelves for all of the kits... I am actually thinking of staining the plywood floor in a WWII deck stain color (or as near as I can get - any suggestions? - all I can find at the local hardware store is a MinWax Midnight Blue....) I am also thinking of building my kits in a production line style - such as painting kits that will have similar color schemes all at one time (e.g. - painting all of the pre-war chrome yellow wings in one painting session....) Think something like that would work? I have an Excel data base set up listing all of the kits I have obtained and those which I am still looking for.... getting down to the nitty gritty in most cases.... some kits which I would like to have don't exists (some did but are now no longer around.....) Things I'm looking for: 1/700 USS Ranger CV-4 (anyone have one they might be willing to part with - for a small fee?) - or a re-release planned anytime soon? 1/700 USS Wasp CV-7 - any update on the status of the expected Corsair Armada release? 1/700 USS Langley CV-1 - is there one other than a scratch build? 1/700 USS Pennsylvania - saw a great scratch build kit in a recent FSM issue - might try that one myself one day... 1/700 Essex Class SCB27A island conversion kit - wasn't someone working on a 1/700 angle deck kit thinking of releasing the island conversion as an extra? Classic Warships has several kits I'm interested in obtaining (USS New Mexico class, USS Wichita, USS Detroit and a USS Pensecola - have they been able to resume production?) 1/700 USS Midway - Straight Deck configuration - Jag Collective update? 1/700 Forrest Sherman - any exist? 1/700 USS Wasp LHD - Revell Germany upcoming release... 1/700 USS Texas CGN - Sealine re-release (heard a rumour JAG Collective may have one coming out?) 1/700 Arleigh Burke Flight IIA 1/700 USS Seawolf or USS Texas Submarine kit.... prefer full kit to a waterline for submarines... in the A/C realm: 1/48 SH-60 Sea Hawk - conversion kit for an existing Blackhawk kit? 1/48 FH-1 Phantom - none exist 1/48 SO3C Seamew - cool looking airplane -even if it sucked... - Classic Resin Airframes - hard to find... 1/48 F9F-6 - upcoming Hobbycraft Release update? 1/48 CH-46 - any exist? Any hints or updates would be greatly appreciated... later cn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "michael thrupp" Subject: Re: 1000 kits and a divorce? 1000 kits and a divorce? Why risk it? Store all your kits in the loft, then tell your wife about the new roof insulation and the projected heating cost savings. I guarantee she will be so delighted with your brilliant creativity that she will fund your next resin ship kit purchase - I wish. Mike Thrupp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: wem Subject: Re: Hangar Deck Cats, IJN Landing Operations >> There was a discussion on this in (I think) Model Ship Builder some years ago. Someone posited that there were such catapults and a former member of the crew of the carrier concerned (Bill Webb of Schodack, NY) wrote back a detailed letter of rebuttal. << Said rebuttal may only have pertained to THAT particular carrier. They DID exist. >> Hanger deck transverse catapults did exist on several of the Essex class. They were there for launching light search and rescue, or possibly a wildcat when the carrier was at anchor. << Actually, they were capable of handling pretty heavy launches. One of the wartime carrier movies (I've forgotten which, but seem to remember Don Ameche in one of the starring roles) included a USN clip of a TBF or TBM being launched from the hangar deck cat. Shot from inside the hangar deck, it's a pretty impressive sight! >> As I said before I have the Tamiya's IJN Transport and Auxiliary Vessels set. I am intending to build a landing diorama early in the Pacific War (Lingaen Gulf, Banten, etc...). Does anyone have pictures of Japanese landing operations during the war. I need to know how their operations were processed. << Felipe, my references are all in a container somewhere between California and England, but I think you'll find that, with the exception of the daihatsu landing barges in that set, the larger specialized vessels were developed and utilized later in the war. Early film clips I've seen show the IJN landing troops from launches, in much the same manner in which the USMC trained pre-war. Whether they were still doing this at the time of the 1941 landings in the Philippines, however, I'm not sure. Remember, those specialized landing vessels were apparently not in existence at the time of the Guadalcanal campaign; of the vessels in the Tamiya set, only the landing barges were used in the Solomons.
