These ships were used as coastal minesweepers, operating in shallow water. Unfortunately, that's about the extent of the info that I've found. Does anyone have any additional info on these conversions? They sound like an interesting model subject. Matt Prager -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "michael thrupp" Subject: Ring Main Turret top decals for ICM KONIG kit? Does anyone know of a source/supplier of circular ring deals for the main turret(s) of the ICM Konig kit? Thanks in anticipation Mike Thrupp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Shirley Sachsen Subject: hangar deck cats sorry I haven't responded earlier to the inquiries about hangar deck cats... I've been working steadily on a project involving Hornet's Cold War role in ASW, so shifting gears back to WWII has taken a bit of effort :-) I have been watching the discussion with great interest. I'd like to say authoritatively that Hornet still has her hangar cat, but I can't, and all this discussion has certainly piqued my interest in searching Hangar 1 for evidence of it. I do know that Hornet was using the thing to the horror of pilots and kept it longer than other Essex class carriers. Evidence of the hangar cat that is obvious are the rollup curtain doors on the stbd side of Hangar 1: there is a definite 'arch' to the door casings at the top and the dividers are removable. The same sort of rollup doors cover the Elevator 2 opening on the port side, but have less of an 'art' to them. running the risk of telling the stories incorrectly, since these are anecdotal and I only overheard bits told to others, I do 'know' that the hangar cat was problematic in use due to the wind issues: the ship had to steam into the wind to launch aircraft--to launch off the hangar at the same time created a crosswind along with other odd little eddy currents caused by the flight deck overhang and other pointy bits in catwalks and sponsons. In order to steam into the wind for the hangar cat, the ship had to zig-zag, and even if the wind was in the right direction for the hangar cat, the ship was still in motion creating new wind and motion issues. (as an example: try launching a paper airplane out of your car window at speed) As I heard, Hornet did actually use the cat, creating a hairy experience for the pilot, and another who found himself in this launch position refused at the last minute. That was the end of that. yes, the hangar cat did block the centerline elevator when in use and it would have created plane movement issues in the hangar. anyway, I will check it out this weekend to see if there is indeed other evidence of this hangar cat. It is rumored that Hangar 1 of all the hangars is the least modified from WWII, but remember the ship did undergo several refits and upgrades, so sometimes even evidence of prior equipment from the early 60s is obliterated (on Hornet it is not readily apparent that she had a centerline elevator aft, for instance). To our advantage in this case is that Hornet was never fitted with steam cats--had she been, the massive plumbing from the things would block any evidence of past practice--even the rollup doors. I hope to have a 'full' report for all of you after the weekend. s -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Shirley Sachsen Subject: Civil War Navies the book to which I was referring is a new book--mine reads 'first printing 2001'. there may indeed have been earlier treatises by the author on the same subject, but this is a new series that looks to fill in the gaps in the Ships & Aircraft format. s -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: 1000 kits and a divorce? >> Been there, done that. I now have 10 ships (resin and injection), all 1/350 scale, on permanent display somewhere in the Santa Cruz County landfill. fortunately none of my boxed kits sailed away, only the ones that were on the display shelves. Just as fortunately, those boxed assets were deemed to have "negligible monetary value." << I do not believe that divorce should have been a consideration in this case. A sacrifice to the Modeling Gods at sunrise in order that you live long enough to build all models in the stash would have been more appropriate. He did have a previous edition on the Civil War "Warships of the Civil War Navies" << Ah is this a different book then or is it an update/reprinting ?? Are there any additional photos?? Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Shirley Sachsen Subject: federal german destroyers this request is a bit off-topic, but it does involve steel ships.... currently, the Federal German Navy is building a class of 'type 124' destroyers. the lead ship in the class is the Sachsen. for obvious reasons, I'd like to know more about this ship. What will it look like? Are pictures of construction, or artist's drawings available? Also, as a collector of naval 'swag', I'd also like to know if the German Navy is as marketing conscious as the US Navy is. for instance: are ship's caps, patches, and tshirts available? I'd like to advertise my namesake! Thank you for any help you can provide. s -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 14:53:05 EST Subject: Re: 20mm guns >> 20mm guns from the kit are now available in sets of 24 photoetch guns with resin pedestals. They offer a higher level of detail in this scale and even have the "V" bracing on the backs of the shields << I have seen these and they are THE BEST, no question. Mike is pushing us to a new level of modeling madness! Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Ron and Louise Crawford Subject: SDV's Does anyone have drawings and dimensions of the Mk. VIII Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV). I have a deep inner need to scratchbuild one and the search engines have been most unproductive. Maybe it's the prospect of any empty DDS that bothers me. I'll be glad to swap a copy of the model for usable plans. Ron Crawford -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "John Sheridan" Subject: Re: WEM Adams class kit >> The ONLY down side to this kit is the decals. It comes with beautiful decals for the ships markings, but does not include any of the deck markings such as warning stripes and replenishment deck markings. I realize this would make the decal sheet about double the size that's currently in the kit, but I would happily pay another $5.00 for it. These markings are very difficult to make (since most of the hazard stripes are circular) so they a real must to be included with the kit. << Uhhh, Rusty? The decal set does include vertrep stripes for the CF Adams. Look at the bottom of the sheet and you will find the solid and dashed lines. When I did the decal sheet, my docs show no less than 7 different versions of vertrep markings! To include all of these on the sheet would have made a rather large set! Also, on most of the photos I looked at, none of them display working or warning circles around sensors and weapons. Had I found some decent images that showed these markings, I would have gladly included them with the set. If you have this kind of data, I would be happy to include the markings in future sets. Please contact me directly and let me know if can help. John Sheridan www.shipcamouflage.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Egg on my face Pardon me while wipe the egg off my face. John Sheridan hurled them my way when he pointed out that the decal sheet included with the WEM Adams class model did indeed include vertrep stripes! Since they were white as well as the decal sheet, I just couldn't see them until John told me exactly where they were. My sincere apologies to John and WEM for that mistake. At those prices, you can even afford to drip tube glue on them, just like when you were a kid! Not too great at accuracy, but hey, build them out of box for the nostalgia value! Saw the old Lindberg Gato fleet sub kit on Ebay just last night, bid up to $38.00. Ouch! Wonder how many shady operators will buy up the reissues and try to pass them off as vintage plastic kits? There was plenty of 1/72 action on the waters, including some Flower class corvettes, RAN, RN, USN & RCN models on the water. a full report with pictures will be available once the film is developed. Our thanks to the TF 72 President & Treasurer Russ french & Michael Brown (both SMMLies) who took the time to explain the wonders of RC to static modellers & made us feel welcome ;-) We have no hesitation in recommending TF 72 to anyone who has an interest in boats that float, they are a great bunch. We expect release of the first kit by the end of March. The first kit is the French destroyer FANTASQUE. The kit will have over 50 pieces, all cast in pewter, including the hull. Price is unknown at this moment, but it will probably be between $20 and $30. Kits will only be available direct from the manufacturer. Future releases will include the French light cruiser EMILE BERTIN and the British battle cruiser REPULSE in 1941 fit. And, if this works well, you will see MANY other NEW releases from IHP in metal in 1:700, for some of which masters are already being prepared. Check out our website at: http://ihphobby.tripod.com.
