I will correct that just in case its of use to some one. A friend mounted his 1/350 KG 5 on 38spec cases and these turned out pretty good. Old brass or nickel plated cases polish up nicely. There also pretty easy to come by..Case in point I have the odd 100 or 2 For the smaller scales look at the .22-Rimfires in short long or magnum. And they are really easy to get..for nought. rgds drj -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Friedrich Kappes Subject: Re: SDVīs Does anyone have drawings and dimensions of the Mk.VIII Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV). I would like to receive them, too Friedrich The FriedrichFiles -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Jim Subject: Kit collecting >> No more than TWO unbuilt kits in your house at any one time?? Genuinely sorry for you old chap. Its the joy of having, the joy of owning, the joy of knowing that you have them there to build, you can pick any kit from the pile and finger through the parts, fondle the resin hulls, eyeball the photoetch, even, by god, sanding a part here and there, then putting it back into the box and shelving it. Its the joy of having bought it at a 'great price" before it got discontinued, and its the joy of knowing you HAVE IT, and you will build it SOMEDAY. << I have found the above to be true also. I often have no time to model for weeks on end. However when the diapers, crying, cleaning, laundry, ... get to me I go the kit stasch and open a few of the good stuff and calm sets in. That is worth the investment even if I never build them. However, I have been buying many kits from estate sales lately and that has had a profound effect on me. I'm building more these days in 10 minute increments stolen from the daily routine. I notice that many of the kits I buy at estate sales are way underpriced. For the sake of your loved ones that will someday deal with what you leave behind consider having available an inventory of what you have and the aproximate value in the right market, and info on how to access that market. If you do this your kit and tool stash is more likely to benefit survivors and will not be treated as junk by the uniformed in the family. It will also help if you have a catastrophe and lose everyhing to fire or natural disaster or as one member did in Oklahoma 2 years ago. Jim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Policy number 1 After reading about all the collections collecting dust, I thought I would make my policy toward models under construction public. First, I have a policy about my collection. I have only about 25 kits in my collection, and like others have stated here, I only buy new ones every now and then. That's because of policy number one. I REFUSE to build more than one model at a time. Once I begin a model, I won't start another until I finish it, no matter how long it takes. This policy serves two purposes. It insures that I have no partially started kits around my workplace. Most of my friends couldn't enact this policy if their very lives depended on it. It also keeps control over the size of my collection. Although WEM has been really testing me with all the cool modern era ships coming. Maybe I'm retentive, but I just can't stand starting another kit while I have one already under construction. Well, off to the therapist. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. Douglas Burleigh" Subject: Re: CAM Ships >> I was wondering if any one has pictures or drawings of the catapults mounted on merchant navy ships by the British during WW2. The reason for this is that I recently aquired a partialy built model of a Liberty ship and would like to alter it. Also, does any one have pictures or drawings of the floating docks and harbours used at Normandy? << Douglas I, to, am interested in CAM ships and have come across the following references. 1. The Allied Convoy System, Arnold Hague, 2000. Chapter 11entitled "CAM Ships" has a nice picture of the Empire Darwin. 2. The Battle Of The Atlantic, Terry Hughes & John Costello, 1977. There is an overhead picture on page 180 of an unnamed CAM. 3. Seaways - Ships in Scale, July/August 1992. Article by Glynn Guest entitled "A Tale of Two Merchant Ships." He built a freelance CAM and the article has some nice pictures of his efforts. 4. Sea Classics, date ukn, Article by Basil Hearde entitled "One-Way To Nowhere. The Saga of WWII's CAM Ships." It has some nice pictures of CAMs including one of a "Hurricat" in mid launch. There is also a nice painting, artist not named, of a Hurricat on a catapult. No measurements with any of these. But enough to follow Glynn Guest and freelance a close approximation. From one Doug to another, Good Luck! A million pages, lots of plans, pictures, all that sort of stuff, plus lists from here to the moon! Start saving your pennies. << Wow! Is it going to include the AKAs & APAs in addition to the LSTs, LSMs, etc? I haven't been able to justify spending $65 for Friedman's other tomes - but I might just find the reason for this one. is the publisher the USNIP? Gary -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Jens H. Brandal" Subject: Model collection I've been following this thread with interest - and have to count myself among the "not likely to finish the lot before I go"-fraternity. After inspiration from Darren Scannel, I decided to have a go at a kit count including accessories like decals, resin, photetch, but not including the books. At current, I have 769 items (haven't even started the decals yet) varying from 1:12 motorcycles (1) to 1:700/720 ships and photoetch (19 different items). 1:350 scale naval is 33 different items, not counting multiples and four different Heller ships and GMM photoetch. Other than that, there is a fair amount of military vehicles, and cars, but the majority is aircraft. Each kit and accessory has been purchased with the intent of making a model, but I haven't got any illusions that I will. Even so, but I will do my best to enjoy whatever I feel like building at the time. That's the sole reason I can think of for not getting rid of any of it. I hope so but I won't believe it till two of them are on my work bench. How many times have we seen and read these things. This 1934 movie stars James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and Gloria Stewart (also seen in the last Titanic movie). The other star in the movie is the USS Arizona herself. << According to the listing it is on from 6am until 7:30AM on said date. I am assuming the website lists times in Eastern, since it doesn't say what zone it is. Maybe it's me. Sure, you can do it, but why would you? << Hey Tom, I'm pretty sure this was a joke, at least partially, did you see the disclaimer! And that photo of him burning the Space station was amusing. Burnaby Hobbies on Rumble and? in Burnaby, has (had) a good selection of RC and plastic ship stuff and books, some from overseas.
