Hello all, The Intrepid Air/Space Museum website has the tentative list of ships coming into NYC for Fleet Week around Memorial Day and on that list is a corvette name Matis Romero. I have searched high and low on the Net and my Jane's Warship Recognition Guide with no luck. What navy does she belong to and any photos out there? As for the list, in addition to the USN ships, the HMS Marlborough (Type 23) will be visiting. I hope some more foreign ships come, those are always interesting to visit. No USN Ticos on the list so far, wonder why? The link to the Fleet Week page is below. http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/events_frame-jump02.html Thanks, Felix Bustelo International Maritime Modeling URL: http://members.tripod.com/~Febus65/imm.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Reagan class carrier? After watching some of the footage of the commissioning of the Reagan, none of the commentators made mention of the class of the carrier (at least from what I heard). I thought it was a Nimitz class. However, with that new and unique island configuration, is there a possibility that this could the flagship of a "Reagan" class carrier? Rusty White Flagship Models Inc. I love WWI dreadnoughts, was on the verge of purchasing a 1/350 Seydlitz when I realized the ship had such a simple design that there was nothing more on a 1/350 then I already had on my 1/700. -- A highly complex ship with lots of little bits and pieces (small guns, hoses, antennae, etc) all over the place begs for a larger scale and is very difficult to recreate in a small scale. A 1945 Essex or Iowa really needs to be 1/350 or bigger! In the same volume at item 15 John Frohock extols the fine plans of John Lambert. I don't think Herr Marschner has much further to look. This subject prompted me to ask the group if anyone has other favourite sources of ship plans either on or off the net. I'm not just talking NAVAL plans here. Good plans and reference are so important to accurate scratch building and kit bashing and, for me at least, the research often takes longer than the actual building!! Hello Bill, I produce the Titanic decals in 1/570 scale but I do not sell them directly. You can get them from Bruce Beveridge at sgt003@ameritech.net. You can also find him at http://titanic-model.com. Bruce also produces a set of decals for the windows and several other of the missing details of this kit. As far as I know, Kit magazine is not already availliable in the US. I am VLS and Squadron customer and this magazine doesn't appear in their latest suplements. To anyone interested I took the contacts availliable inside the magazine: Kit Magazine Publications Fabeco 38, Rue de Trevise 75009 Tel: ++ 33 148 01 0881 Fax: ++33 148 01 6838 E-mail: redaction.kitmag@caramail The Bunker Hill article is in fact the best replica of an Essex Class Carriers I've seen, check for yourselves. This new guy in the neighbourhood needed some dry cleaning done and soon found the neighbourhood Chinese laundry. There it was in bold letters "Olf Olafson's Chinese laundry." So naturally our writer asked "How come?" Well, according to the laundry owner who was obviously chinese, when he landed on Ellis Island there was this big white guy off the same boat who went through immigration just ahead of him. By the time his turn came the immigration officer asked him for his name. "Sam Ting," our future laundry shop owner said. I am looking for suggestions for hobby shops I might visit and museums or other sites of interest. Although I hesitate to admit it on this list, my interests are broad enough to encompass any sort of museum, etc dealing with aspects of military history. I know enough French to communicate with cab drivers and waiters, but thats about it. So what is out there? I am also willing to get on a train and take a day trip, if that expands the possibilities. Could I get to Normandy and back in day? Hi James, You could take a "day trip" to Normandy, but it would depend on what you wanted to see there. We were there in 1992 & caught the train from Paris to Bayeaux (where we stayed), it took about 1-2 hours iirc. Depending on public transport from there, you could get to Arromanches, Omaha Beach etc. I can't comment too much about the rest, as we hired a car after the first day to get around, except to say that it's worth going there. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Stuart Batchelor Subject: Colour or color printers I need a little goup input please. Here at my office the big cheese (aka the BOSS) just bought us a digital camara and said to get a colour printer. This is an opputunity to get the correct type of printer. By the correct type I maen one that can handle ordinary colour printing plus those special jobs if I want to do my own decals. I know this has been covered before, but I tried the SMML archives and found that my set up doesn't like the archives, so I ask for you (the groups) indulgance in asking this again. I know I can't swing the top end ALPS, but are there other printers that would work? What do I want to stay away from, and what do I want to look for? Those are my big ones. I prefer 1/600 or 1/1200. The only problem with 1/700 is it is some bizarre metric formula imposed on the hobby by the Japanese Modelling Cartel in the '70's. Dave Gregory -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "William Oreto" Subject: 1/700 Scale Love or Hate I like both scales, unfortunately because of finances and space I had to stop adding to my 1/350 collection. I still have my 1/350 collection. My 1/700 scale collection is larger and growing. That doesn't mean I begrudge any model ship builder a 1/350 collection. God Bless. I do get upset when 1/350 scale collectors make postings against 1/700 scale or try to convince manufacturers to abandon 1/700 scale. They are entitled to their opinion. My opinion is that smart manufacturers should split their efforts. The caps will be based on the US Navy ship-silhouette style baseball cap: They will be black in colour and feature the name "H.M.S. HOOD" in yellow/gold in an arc above a silver silhouette of Hood. Beneath Hood will be "1920-1941" (the lettering and ship will be emroidered). Before we can go forward, we would like to determine just how much interest there is in such a product. So, those of you who are seriously interested are asked to contact me at allenfw2@yahoo.com and let me know how many you would be interested in (and sizes). This will not constitute an order, but will be used for planning purposes. If and when the caps are made, we will contact you to find out if you are still interested. Regarding price, we do not have a set price at this time...in fact, this is one of the main reasons for this query...the price will depend on how many we get produced. Thus, we need to know roughly how many to initially order. As it currently stands, I would estimate the price to be in the neighbourhood of £10 /$15 (could be higher or lower). Funds generated by cap sales will be used to assist in Association related events (our reunion to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the sinking, etc).
