Although it is ROOSEVELT, singular for the Destroyer. It is named after Franklin D Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. I forgot about USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN 71. It had me really wondering when I came across the DDG website, I thought that name should be a carrier! Combat Fleets does refer to CVN 71 and up as the ROOSEVELT class, although I disagree. What is the difference between the hulls? If it is external, then REAGAN should start a new class because of the bow bubble. And if they all get refitted with the new bubble and super, then does that make them all REAGAN class ships now? I dunno, but I doubt it. << Well, the differences are an improvement in reactor output (so I have been told), a complete redo of the information systems from Roosevelt and each ship onward, and numerous other internal improvements. The Sea Systems folks still have it listed as an SCB-102 (Nimitz) but felt there was enough difference to warrant a sub-type (SCB-102A), much like the numerous mods made under the Essex modernization program (SCB-27 series) and the Kitty Hawk class (SCB-127 series) ... it just designated the fact there the ships aren't the same any more. As for new names, the Senate has approved a "Sense of the Senate" resolution (I think that is the parliamentary device they used, I could be wrong) that stated the name for CVN-77 should be Lexington. I would to see a return to traditional names, but I don't think it'll happen. Congress has authorized LHD-8, and so far every hull has been named for an Essex lass carrier (Iwo Jima was the canceled CV-46). Between this class and the Tico cruisers, there are only 9 of the 26 names untaken (10 if you discount the Intrepid at the Naval Academy ... Look it up!) HORNET FRANKLIN RANDOLPH LEXINGTON HANCOCK ORISKANY REPRISAL SHANGRI-LA Of these, Reprisal was also canceled, so that leaves 8 or 9 available. I would like to see the next carriers named Lexington, Saratoga, Hornet, Ranger, Independence, Shangri-La and Oriskany ... but they do not listen to me, unfortunately, History cannot vote. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Craig R Bennett Subject: Re: PT 109 & PT 117 Hi Concerning the differences between PT-109 and PT-117 kits by Revell. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Alan Scheckenbach" Subject: Markings on Japanese Midget Subs SMMLies, Would anyone here know about the markings that would have been on the hulls of the midget subs that got into Sydney Harbour? The AWM fellow who's assisting me with the detail survey of the Meillerwagen is also working on the sub. They've come across a series of marking whose outlines are chiseled onto the hull. It's like a dot to dot and you paint between the dots to find the letter/symbol. They think they've found things like weight and balance points and a plimsol line set of marking but there is something else on the line of the rear of the torpedo tubes that no-one seems to be able to figure out. None of the photos I've seen of these subs in wartime have any lines or markings, that I can remember so I thought that maybe there is a SMMLie out there who has some info on these kinds of things. Alan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Timothy Dike" Subject: Re: Seaplanes for USS Cumberland Sound >> I am building the USS Cumberland Sound in 1/700 and was wondering if there would have ever been any seaplanes stowed anywhere on the deck while underway (like on many IJN seaplane tenders) and if so, what types of planes? Could there have been something as large as a PBY on the aft deck near the large aircraft handling crane? I havn't been able to find any photos showing any planes on the deck at all. And does anyone know of any large USN seaplanes (like PBYs) in 1/700? I thought Skywave would have had some but doesn't seem like it... << Keep in mind that these were tenders and didn't operate like aircraft carriers, most of the time I would imagine that the sea planes would be airborne. But I'm sure they would have to be transported some time, mostly if they were not operational. I have seen a few pics showing PBM mariners being hoisted aboard, so a PBY would be no problem. There is a PBY in the Skywave aircraft set #S-9 (http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/misc/us-air/usaircraft-1.html). Loose Cannon Productions is supposed to be coming out with a PB2Y Coronada and PBM Mariner in 700 scale soon. I have the book on "US Escort Carriers and Aviation support ships" by Stephen Terechivetz (sorry I think I butchered his name) and I think it should have some info on there normal compliment of aircraft. Kennedy missing from Battleship Cove Hi Gang, The JPK was probably missing when they were filming the movie "Twelve Days", which was about the Cuban Missile Crisis. I read somewhere that the JPK played herself, and then renumbered to represent another destroyer. I understand she was under tow for the filming. But I don't know where the actual filming took place. This was, of course, one of the field trips made as part of the SMML Convention 2000, during the course of which it was my genuine pleasure to be able to make acquaintence with so many distinguished modellers and historians, including Art himself. During the course of the visit I asked one of the Park Rangers where the USS "Joseph P.Kennedy" was and was informed that she had been towed out to sea to be used in the making of the film on the Cuban missile crisis, "Thirteen Days". If any of you have not seen the film, I believe that the film makers have done a fairly skillful job in using the old destroyer and making her look fully operational. I drove past Battleship Cove on my way to Providence, Rhode Island, a few weeks ago and am happy to report that the "Joseph P.Kennedy" is back at her berth. The Soviet missile corvette is a former East German Navy ship which was acquired by the US Navy after the re-unification of Germany and was used for various trials. She is now a permanent feature at Battleship Cove and well worth a visit as, of course, is the "Joseph P.Kennedy". Harold Lincoln -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: WEM Knox class frigate (a quick review) I just got my Knox kit from WEM. WOW, definately worth the price! The casting on this kit is absolutely superb. Almost non-existant flash of any kind on any of the parts. The packaging is very nice as well to protect the delicate parts during overseas shipping. The smaller and VERY delicate cast metal mast parts were packaged in seperate vac formed boxes. The decals are also very nice and this one comes with the circular helicopter pad markings as well as the VERTREP markings as well. The only decals lacking in the kit are the circular warning/hazard stripes for the weaponry. I hope Duane Fowler has these in the works. THAT'S RIGHT DUANE. I'M READY FOR THEM WHEN I START THE KNOX! I normally don't build my models as full hulled, but I'm really tempted on this one. I really hate not to use these beautiful parts. The instructiona are the usual super great quality I have come to expect from WEM. They include full color painting guides to aid the builder with a limited nautical library. I HIGHLY recommend this model to anyone who enjoys this era of warship. I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED WITH THIS KIT!!! I have no financial interest in WEM. I'm just a super satisfied customer who has been longing for some modern era vessels, and am so happy to see such quality kits now available. How about a 1/350 Tarawa? I had of necessity to learn Dutch (spoken by the Belgians as well) and some German. In both languages all nouns have a gender, masculine, feminine and neutral. Both "schiff" (German) and "schip" (Dutch) are gender neutral words and yet the personnel of all three navies with whom I had dealings referred to a ship as "he" and used masculine grammar when referring to a ship. The Independent Systems Operator in California has just completed an investigation and concluded that Californians were overcharged $6 Billion for electricity between last May and this February due to market manipulation by suppliers. Will we get that money back? Not likely considering that the folks who gouged us are pals of the current administration. And now, the question has arisen as to why Californians are being charged 6 times the price our neighbors are charged for natural gas, a commodity which has absolutely no relation to the number of power plants in operation. There are plenty of places that power companies could have and would have built power plants in this state IF they had thought it was going to be financially in their interests to do so. David is about 8,000 miles from the production facilities right now and it may be a while before he can pour some more resin. You can view the two aircraft on Colpar's webb page colpar.com along with several other ship photos both large [1/96] and small [1/700] in the model Gallery section. As a side note, Dick Marshal built a few HMS ships and they are all metal except a thin venier of wood over a metal deck. He has a 1/96 scale KGV that is not in the photos that has appeared in some magazines. Dick learned his trade in the Royal Navy on Corvettes during WWII and has some tall stories to tell about going into Russia with another Modeler from Canada that was on Corvettes at the same time, same convoys but didn't meet each other untill last year at the local RC pond. Photos of the metal ships are also in the model section of Colpars webb page. If you find a white ship in the gallery, that is a Gearing scratchbuilt from Evergreen plastic before it has a paint job.
