That's very roughly about $140 US, a more reasonable price. I will buy one, along with one of the expected PE sets. She's a beautiful ship, despite her tragic fate. Now if do they ever come out with an Essex, I'll buy three to build as USS Princeton, CV-37, in her three guises as CV, CVS and LPH. I just hope WEM plans to really expand their line of 1/350 aircraft in that case. WILL THIS RAIN EVER STOP?! Now I understand why Boeing is leaving Seattle. :-) Yes, my yard is a beautiful green, but only because moss is replacing the grass. And I can't paint my models! How do you English handle it? Saw ad at kitlink.com that lists their price as $89.99. Also indicated they were not currently taking orders on these kits yet. Might be worth checking on periodically if anyone is interested in this kit. Regards, David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: rweilach@mindspring.com Subject: Iowa/Missouri Can anyone tell me what their opinions are about the accuracy of the 1/700 Fujimi Iowa and Missouri (circa 1944)? I know the Iowa bridge structure is not correct, and I can replace the 5"/38 and 40mm's. What I want to know is: 1. Are the 20mm arranged correctly? 2. Is the superstructure, etc correct? 3. is the hull shape correct? Thanks, Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: BSteinIPMS@aol.com Subject: Disposition of IOWA class battleships For those of you who are wondering what has become of the four IOWA class battleships, here's what I came up with: BB-61, IOWA: will be moored with the reserve fleet in Suisun Bay near San Francisco until 2004, then will be put up for auction, hopefully to become a memorial open to the public. Web site: http://www.hrnm.navy.mil/ Bob Steinbrunn Minneapolis Member, Nautical Research Guild -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: ICM's "Hood" I am really glad that some of the list members (James McCormick, Gary King and Steve Wiper among those few) decided to inject a bit of reason into the discussion of ICM's "Hood". What is the point in discussing model which is yet to be released or slag off the price without knowing what the final price will be?? However hard press, no manufacturer will release a kit at the price which is prohibitive to its customers, limited run or not. Specjally what do you call "limited run" with injection models??? Unlike resin manufacturers ICM has to release enough kits to, hopefully, get a return on their initial investment. Also as Steve Wiper pointed out releasing of the "Koenig" was not such a bad decision as many of the list members think.I know for the fact that kit was snapped up in Germany and, because there is so little choice for modellers interested in WW I, it will continue to sell well for quite some time yet. The "Grosser Kurnfurst" was supposed to be different from "Koenig" but for the broken mold. It was a mistake (IMO) to release "Kurnfurst" despite this, but than I suspect that most of resin and plastic manufacturers released a "dud" kit just because THEY thought it would sell and forgot to ask their customers. Another topic it that of the American market,it will probably always have an advantage over European one, because it is so much more homogeneous over there (it's a fact not a criticism). While our American friends want "Essex" or "Arizona",some of us Old Worlders want "Hood", other prefer "Bismarck" and other still would like a kit of "Vittorio Venetto" or "Jean Bart". And thank Godess for small blessing because otherwise we would be swamped in "Iowas" "Hornets" and "Washingtons". All I can say is "Vive la difference"!!! Regards D.P. p.s. I do find it ironic that ICM releases (or planes to) kits of two Japanese kits just than Japenese market curled up and died on them. Life I guess huh?? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Craig R Bennett Subject: Re: ICM Hood Hi Guys Shades of Pearl Harbor! Just few days before the announcement that ICM Hood was going for $199 I put the entire list of new kits from FSM -April 2001 showing it at 130.00 and the Essex for $150.00 and nobody said anything at all for few days until the $199.00 report. Well,I feel like Joe Lockner. I reported what I saw. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: Submarine Espionage >> If you are interested in the outstanding spy service of USN subs during the "Cold War" I suggest you read: Blind Man's Bluff by S. Sontag and C. Drew << There is a new book out by John P. Craven, architect of much of the equipment used by "Special Ops" submarines during the Cold War. He features prominently in "Blind Man's Bluff". The book is entitled "The Silent War: The Cold War Battle Beneath the Sea ". One chapter sheds new and very disturbing details on what might have happened to the Soviet submarine (Golf class- maybe not, according to Craven!) that sank in 1968, and was the target of the CIA's attempt to recover it with the Glomar Explorer. Tom Dougherty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: dlfowler@apple.com Subject: More CA experiences This is a bit off topic but I thought that some may learn from it (or at least have a hearty laugh!) A bit ago I was working on my car and accidentally broke the glove compartment door. Being the cheap person that I am I didn't want to pay for a new part and being a male and a modeler I figured "I can fix it." I got out few pieces of styrene sheet for strength and a bottle of CA and in about a minute I had a part stronger than the original. No problems. Of course I then forgot to put the cap back on the bottle of CA and put it down in the tool box behind me. I reach back to get the vice grips and noticed that they felt a bit wet. Thinking that I had spilled some water I was a bit irritated but not to concerned. That's when I tried to put the vice grips down. OOPS! The CA had covered them completely so that every bit of flesh that had come in contact with the metal was now very well and solidly bonded to it. I had to drive over 20 miles to the closest store that would have debonder. Fortunately I could grab the shift lever with the vice grips. I imagine that I now know what the robot on "Lost in Space" must have gone through. Anyway, when I got to the store I did my best to avoid explaining why I was carrying the vice grips wherever I went and bought their entire stock of debonder. Driving home was just as fun as going down there. two painful hours later I had one very clean set of vice grips and a very raw hand. I've been practicing to perform Rusty's #11 Exacto blade move next. Regards, Duane (I'd shake your hand but...) Kit is a surprisingly accurate early Elco 80 ft. With some detailing it should result in a nice display model. Questions: 1. Can somebody advise as to most authentic paint colors? I know from photos that these early PTs weren't camoflaged. I also assume hull was green, but which green? Likewise assume she was likely painted anti-fouling red below waterline. Correct assumption? 2. What is correct water line? Anti-fouling below hull planing strake? As asides, I like the idea of building this PT because she wasn't particularly distinguished. Put into service in '42; she was destroyed by enemy bombers Aug. '43 in Rendova Harbor, Solomon Islands. To me, she's an exemplar of the many vessels that fought, in her case died, without much notice. Famous ships certainly are worthy subjects, but that 2 ocean war was fought, won & lost by a lot of relatively unknown ships, like PT 117. One other thought for manufacturers or after-market builders. PTs were standardized beginning early in WW II & to the end. The Elco 80' & the Higgins 78" were the standards; however, some details changed over that time, as would be expected. In particular, the torpedo tubes in use early on [e.g., PT 117] were replaced by launch racks when the smaller aircraft torpedoes became the standard. The PTs also packed more firepower over time [e.g., 40 mm aft in later boats]. Further evolutions included, different mast on later Elco boats, most later PTs carried both a life raft & a dinghy, camo paint, etc. In short, a box of alternative parts & some decals together w/authentic paint schemes could turn the PT 117 kit into representatives of all the Elco '80 PTs from '42 to the end of WW II. Just an idea, or is this something that's already available that I don't know about, because I'm new to this hobby? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Darren Scannell Subject: THE ICM HOOD IS HERE!!!!! I just picked up the ICM HOOD kit from my local hobby shop and it is a beauty! The price is $99US ( I paid $156CDN which converts to $99US). It came from the supplier today and he only got 2 kits as they are being spread very thinly. The supplier said that Canada only got 3 boxes of six for the whole country!!! I opened it at the store and was very impressed with the fineness of the molds. There is an incredible amount of detail and every inch of this kit is covered solid with handles, vents, latches, portholes, all the fittings that you can see on the real thing! I plan on spreading it out tomorrow for a more thorough comparison with reference material. Decals are included as is a nicely rendered colour drawing, showing her in Mountbatten Pink for her Med tour alongside ILLUSTRIOUS. The dimensions are spot on at 0401mm x 01mm. This is simply fantastic! I just have to go and look it over some more, because by the time you all read this, I'll probably be getting in trouble. Cheers! We need to get the 1/700 RENOWN 1944 and QE 1918, and the 1/700 HMS NORFOLK 1990 completed and out to everyone.. then we have to do the various conversions to the ARETHUSA and DIDO classes that we've listed.. then, in 1/700.. that could be next... or maybe the WW2 FURIOUS will get moved up the list of priorities.
