The latest installments in the "Horatio Hornblower" television miniseries begin airing on the A&E (Arts and Entertainment) Network on April 8th. Viewers in North America can see the episodes at 8 PM, Eastern Standard Time, but check local cable listings for availability. Mike Alexandria, VA USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: HMS Aurora Mark Krumrey asked - >> I recently acquired a LEE 1/300 British Aurora Cruiser. There are virtually no decals or paint instructions. It appears to be a decent kit. I don't know how accurate, or inaccurate it is, just it seems like a decent kit. << It does look pretty darn nice, but I don't know much about WW2 British cruisers. >> Anyone here know what scheme it may have appeared in during the early days of 1941. << I think there are port and starboard color profiles of the sister ship ARETHUSA in the new Warship Perspectives "Royal Navy Camouflage Vol-2" by Alan Raven. Both ships may have had very similar patterns, at least as of 1942. MWL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Rod Dauteuil Subject: April Fools Day Isn't it funny that last year the April Fools joke was that the ICM Konig had triple gun turrets, and this year it is the ICM Hood was released? Is this a thing with ICM? Firstly the sinking of the U587 on 27.3.42 - does anyone have a detailed account of this event including a time? Secondly I need details on the Madagascar operation on 5.5.42 particularly the roles played by the aircraft carriers and their escorts (Illustrious and Indomitable). Many thanks in advance Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: PT Boat upgrade >> In short, a box of alternative parts & some decals together w/authentic paint schemes could turn the PT 117 kit into representatives of all the Elco '80 PTs from '42 to the end of WW II. << Well.... it would have to include a whole lot of alternative parts! :-} Essentially, to accurately depict most variations of the 80' boats, everything from the deck up would have to be included. There are several versions of the charthouse and day cabin; only the first few had planked decks; the torpedo tube pads would have to be completely removed to depict the later boats; the depression rails vary with the armament; the instrument panels have different arrangements; etc. You could still use the .50s and 20mm, torpedo tubes, and the small details such as cleats, props, mufflers, etc. Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Shane Weier Subject: Re: Origin of the term WOG Peter says: >> Sorry to add more confusion to the thread but I well remember a Commander in the Sri Lankan Navy who called himself a WOG. He said it was definitely "Worthy Oriental Gentleman" and used it with pride to distinguish himself from his uneducated compatriots. << If I had $1 (even Australian $$$) for every time someone used a word he didn't know the meaning of, I'd be able to afford an ICM Hood, *whatever* the cost. I'm sure your Sri Lankan friend believed what he said, but then, but I bet most people here believed the folk etymology without question Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Hughes Family" Subject: Tampa FL USA I will be in Tampa all next week for business/pleasure, does anyone know of any good model shops in the area I can visit while I am there? Thanks in advance. Ok, this post does not have any connection to the fact that today(yesterday) is April 1. Although, I'm pretty darn sure the HOOD was never in pink. Baca" Subject: 32' PWB Request For Info The 32' Ports And Waterways boat that Craig Bennett asked about in SMML #1184 should not be too difficult to track down. The 32 Footers were used as fire fighting, rescue and harbor patrol boats by the USCG Captains Of The Port in various U.S. Harbors. I even built a model of one back in the 1980s which resides at the USCG Museum in Seattle. Plans can also be obtained from Radio Control Boat Modeler Magazine. Neat little boats... The manufacturer of all the boats in this large class was Willard Marine of Anaheim, CA. The last phone number I have for them is 714-666-2150. Williard marine still builds workboats and supplies RIB boats to the U.S. government under contract. I'm sure Williard can assist in identifying the Camden Fire Department's boat if you can supply the VIN and pertinent numbers. If you need address info for Williard, please contact me via e-mail. One question I need to confirm from my research (as seen on some pictures) is whether the secondary decks are really painted as deck tan rather than the usual deck grey. Anyone can shed light? Thanks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: BB-16 ANCHOR CHAIN >> HAVING VISITED THE U.S.S. Mispelkamp Subject: 1/400 Scale ships Joe Reyna's post of a few days ago hit it right on the head, but he forgot the Heller Tirpitz (I can't remember if he mentioned all three of Heller's Deutschland's though), as well as a whole slew of IJN WWII CA's (all four Mogami's, at least one Tone, and Tamiya's long lost Myoko and Hagura (and I'm betting that Tamiya made the other two ships of their class [Nati] - in that scale as well). BTW, I have a photocopy of the instructions for a 1/400 Tamiya IJN WWII CA kit! I do want to know who has those molds today. If they were to be released, I would buy at least one Mogami, one Tone and four Nati's! I sincerely doubt that Tamiya will ever release another 1/400 scale major WWII warship simply because their prestige now rests on a very limited 1/350 line - but they might let some other company lease their old 1/400 molds. They would certainly complement my current fleet of circa 40 major WWII ships in this scale - not to mention all my my DDs, subs and other smaller combatants. Sincerely Peter K. H. Dear friends and fellow SMMLies, I would like to ask a favour from the non-US SMMLies out there. As part of a lesson in geography the class of one of my closest friend's son (who is 7 years old and in second grade) is collecting post cards from around the world. If some of you could drop a post card with photo that is typical of your areas I would be very much grateful. Please do not forward this request to any other lists. Thank you very much. Please send post cards to: Karl LeVezu c/o Sierra Hills School, Room 18 P. O. Unlike the much hyped and discussed (but never seen) ICM Hood (well, never seen except in certain parts of Canada), there are actual photos of these models on their website. It seems that in this group of kits, they may actually be casting undercuts below overhanging deck platforms, and using cast cross-bracing beneath these, when appropriate. That would be more realistic, and a real improvement. We'll have to see what actually turns up in the mail. For more, go to . And as always, enjoy! The USS Lexington, moored in Corpus Christie, Texas as a museum ship suffered a fire in what was called "Navigation Spaces". The fire fighters were hampered by low water pressure amd had to run hoses from off the dock. The fire is believed to have been started by painters. No information on the amount of damage. Baca" Subject: Model Ship Journal Update For Spring First off, Thank You to all of you who expressed condolences during the past month. My mother passed away peacefully last week and we appreciate your understanding while Cindy and I were out of state taking care of her. The Spring 2001 issue of Model Ship Journal is ready to ship, please allow at least three weeks for the USPS to deliver. They will be mailed this week. This issue is filled with reviews of new resin and plastic kits just now hitting the market. We did quite a bit of long distance coordination with our printer in Bellingham and they did a great job as usual on printing and photo reproduction. The highlight of the Spring issue is French modeler Pierre Marchal's USS Missouri, which made the covers. It's a scratchbuilt beauty in 1/350 scale. We also covered another of Don Preul's detailed Gearing Class DDs (circa 1952) and wait 'till you see what we did with the ubiquitious 3"-50 Caliber deck gun as a photo feature. All in all, I think you'll enjoy this issue. Contact me via e-mail if you'd like subscription info.
