I am modeling all five of these ships, but so far i have not come up with anything specific on the colors for the destroyers. All help is appreciated. How many orders would you need to financially justify doing this? If there was sufficient demand from SMMLiedom, would you do it? And how many SMMLies out there would be interested in this? << Count me in for this one. Although, I would prefer the photoetch represent Leander class cruisers rather than the Ajax specifically. I've already already built Classic Warship's HMS Achilles, and I wouldn't mind updating it with photoetch. And I suspect that I will buy a BResina HMS Ajax. It would be nice to see more of this class in periods other than the pursuit of Graf Spee. Leander in the Pacific 1942, Orion in the Med or a late war Achilles. Conversion kits, maybe? I do find it somewhat curious that conversion sets haven't caught on in model shipbuilding. Especially given the numbers of models presently available, it would seem to be a good short run resin project. Just thinking out-loud. Comments? I exchanged emails with a Tamiya Customer rep who first denied that Tamiya had ever released either the 1/300 scale DD's or the 1/400 scale IJN cruisers! I pointed him to the HobbyLink Japan website, and he then explained that the 1/300 scale DD's were a promotional item whose re-release that had virtually nothing to do with Tamiya! I have looked over my CA instruction sheet, and judging by the prices of the kits and numbers, Tamiya might have a hand in the 1/400 scale releases of the Tone (Tones?), Mogami's as well. Unfortunately, I cannot read Japanese, so I will have to keep on guessing! I for one wish that they had re-released the cruisers instead of the DD's - I suspect that 1/400 scale kits would have sold better - at least so far as I am concerned! If anyone from Tamiya is looking at this list, my message is "if you release it, it will sell". Since you know about the Hobby and Paramount kits, can you confirm that there was a 1/400 scale Mikuma kit with 5 twin 8" turrets? Also, do remember anything about the UPC 1/400 line, namely was there a USS New Jersey (Korean/Viet Nam fit) and USS Missouri (WWII fit?) in their line? I suspect that these old kits are the basis for the current Arii/Kangnam kits. If they are, they may be some hope for us 1/400 scale diehards yet. << Peter, I know that a Mogami was done- I have seen it. It had the alternate parts for the flight deck version, but it has been so long ago that I saw it that I can't rememeber whether the main turrets were the twin 8" or triple 6". I think probably the triple 6", but I can't remember for sure. I know that the kit had all five turrets, and I can remember seeing a listing for a Mikuma somewhere, so one was definately done. If someone has a copy of the Kit Collector's catalogue, maybe they could clear up this point. UPC's offerings were released about the time of the Vietnam war, so I don't think they had the Vietnam fit Jew Jersey yet. I have never actually seen either of the 1:400 Iowa kits from UPC. I do have the UPC 1:400 Yamato, however, and it was fairly good for the time it was done, but it doesn't compare at all to later Yamato models. The one 1:400 model from Japan that I can recommend is the Nichimo 1:400 Yamato, which has the alternate parts to build the Musashi. Except for the moulded-on railings, it is a great kit. Unfortunately, it is hard to find- I still have one that I found a few years ago through a friend, and I haven't seen one before or since. I dont know if I am stepping out of line here, but I wish to comment on the whining, snivelling, complaining Japanese insisting, screaming for a public apology from the ship's Captain et al about the accident offshore Pearl Harbor awhile ago. Well, the Japanese still have not acknowledged they started the Pacific War, and maybe they should collectively apologize to the surviving families of the ARIZONA, OKLAHOMA, WEEVEE, UTAH, NEVADA, CALIFORNIA, and all other shipmates families lost in action Dec. 7th, 1941......60 years ago. I believe the incident occured at 9 miles. If this is true, what in the world was a Japanese fishing vessel, in this modern day and age of GPS, etc, doing 3 miles in US waters, and why is nobody asking this question? << The 12 mile limit only applies if the trawler was actually fishing at the time (I don't know if it was or not). Any ship may transit through the 12 mile limit if going to port. Nat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Robert J. The simulators look like Corsair cockpit of WW2. A game like that to be profficent with takes alot of practice. You interact with others. A guy flying a U.S. plane shoot me down by accident when we both went after the same Zero. It was located 1 hr driving time west of Orlando. I went to it in ''99 for the IPMS Nationals as part of the tours available. The museum had quite few interesting aircraft on display.
