My apologies for the size - using lesser formats removes what I am trying to show. The first is a terrific close-up shot of HMNZS Canterbury - note the differences in the decks. Like the RAN, the RNZN uses a dark grey deck paint. The differences that show up clearly on this close-up reflect when that section of the deck was most recently repainted. Some decks are used more than others - and therefore need repainting more frequently and weather quicker. This effect becomes even more pronounced on the Tasmanex shot taken in March this year. In particular note the weathering on the decks of the four ANZAC class frigates - and the "fresh" flight deck on HMAS Anzac. The weathering is also noticeable on the two NZ Leanders and the other three Australian ships but note the relative lack of visible weathering on the decks of the two French ships which appear to be using a very dark green surface. So, whose got any ideas on some deck "weathering" like shown here? Acknowledgment - the photographs are courtesy of the RNZN's Navy Review and copyable provided Navy Review is credited. For the record the ships in view comprise: On the outer wharf - RNZN frigates Te Kaha and Te Mana, Australian frigates Anzac, Arunta, and Melbourne and destroyer Brisbane, French frigate Vendemaire and patrol ship La Moqueuse. On the outer side of the central wharf is HMNZS Canterbury, HMAS Waller (Collins class sub) and HMAS ??? (Freemantle class patrol craft) On the inner side of the centre wharf is the decommissioned frigate Wellington. On the boiler wharf is the tanker HMNZS Endeavour (under long refit), and in the dry dock the much fault plagued Trans Rail ferry MV Aratere. Note on the Aratere the darker weathered rail deck. It would appear green weathers darker whereas dark grey weathers darker but fades lighter? Food for thought. John Sutherland Wellington, New Zealand Hi all, The pictures have been uploaded to the SMML site on the "Misc ships" page. Breaking news. This Sunday (April 22nd) the US Navy's Sea Shadow will be on public display in San Pedro between piers 44 thru 48. Gates open at noon. There is also a second ship on display, unfortunately though, I didn't catch the name. This second ship was described as the Navy's hi-tech test bed . . . could be very interesting. Suggest that you call KNX News Radio at (323) 460-3343 for additional details. In reviewing my copy of Floating Dry Dock Camouflage, copyright 1976, measure 1 is given as the scheme for the battle line during the attack. Color being 5L for the mast tops, and 5D for all vertical surfaces. I have the Snyder and Short paint chip set and the 5L seems right, but the 5D seems awfully dark. I have looked at finished models and they seem a lot lighter than 5D. I am using the GMM detail set, and want this to look good, and want to paint it right. I know I have to lighten the 5D a bit for scale effect, but it will still be quite dark. Photographs in the book, do show the ships a very dark color. I know there was discussin quite awhile ago about the color of the fleet. Is there newer data than 1976 as to the scheme of the Battle Line on that fateful day. Any information will be valuable. Thanks Mark Krumrey New Richmond WI -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Axel Wolters" Subject: OTAKI 1:400 Scale Ships, Mike Thrupp Hi Mike and everybody, interesting request for the OTAKI 1:400 Scale Nagato and Mutsu! Unfortunately OTAKI seems to have quit business a few years ago (does anybody know more? and what happened to IMAI?) because a lot of their tools -mostly planes and cars- went to ARII and DOYUSHA of Japan. Where did the ship tools go? Lets hope that they will have a revival as well! Greetings Axel Wolters, Monchengladbach, Germany -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Paul Lewis" Subject: Re: Hellers 1:400 Prinz Eugen William, I have just bought this kit myself and except for the one huge mistake (2 port side hulls) I can vouch for it. As for sprucing it up, I am awaiting some basic etched metal parts, on order from White ensign models, these include 1:400 extrafine 3 bar rails and ladders, watertight doors and hatches etc. Trying to find upgrade parts for this scale seems to be a fruitless task, most of the parts I have ordered are 1:350 with the exception of the rails. I have found the Heller Kits to be of good quality when you consider their price. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: JKNs Hi All Well my review of Alan Raven's book has certainly stirred up a hornets nest and reading the comments I wonder why. If you can recall I recommended that people buy the book despite its faults and there are more that I could name. Now I also commented on the subject I had studied - note I did not go for a generalised attack on the whole book. I would say that is fair and balanced. And yes I also mentioned my book but that is because it will contain accurate schemes based only on photographs. Now a lot of you are demanding that I produce my research material to prove my points. Why? I note that the same request is not being made of Alan Raven - if he has the photographs to prove things then surely he could manage to produce them. Actually I have been in touch with Alan about collaborating and have got nowhere, he is very secretive. Be that as it may I mentioned a public website where you could check the information and it looks like those attacking me have not even bothered. This is what I mean by the fact that I have done the research and you haven't. Too many people are more concerned with inserting their collective feet into their mouths. This debate has cleared up whether I release any information as well the answer is no. None of you will see it until its published. I will of course continue to comment on Alan's books. When he started out he produced extremely high quality work but just because he did so in the past does not mean that he continues to do so. With a reputation complacency can develop and other people have pointed out flaws in his camouflage works - so what is wrong with me doing so. A word of advice here too many of you abandon your critical facilities - never do that for any work no matter what the reputation of the author. This is what allows plagiaristic works like Profile Morskie to flourish. Turning to my criticism of his colour schemes as I have said he has the three Ns wrong. This can be shown by visiting a public website (Australian War Memorial: www.awm.gov.au/database/photo.asp) and buying prints of the ships. Re P28. Nepal's commissioning photos and later service photos both show a two colour scheme so I would suggest that unless other photos exist of Nepal wearing the Raven scheme - it never did. The second scheme (P35) is more complex but has been misinterpreted, what is supposed to be a section of camouflage is in fact just wear and tear – you need to look at all the photos on the website to see this and then buy the prints. Norman is a three colour scheme (and for this you definitely need to buy prints) akin to the Q class ships. With regard to Kandahar, Alan e-mail me your photo if it proves what you say it does I will happily apologise to you publicly on SMML and admit that I was wrong. I will maintain your confidentiality. I will also share my Kandahar photo with Alan. What I got for my $25.00 was a pile of 81/2 X11 photo copies of a set of 1/96 plans. OK I thought, now I know not to patronize this seller. Let The buyer beware. Many thanks John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: HAZEGRAYADM@aol.com Subject: Re: F Yohan & Essex 40mm layout Using the Hasegawa kit, doing the Essex while in camo 6/10D will require the removal of the stern & starboard 40mm sponsons & filling in same. Make a single stern sponson & mount off center (To port) & add two 40s tubs to slightly overhang the starboard hull edge. Add the two 40s on the hanger deck sponson/frwd/port side (Part C-15) & the single at the bow per instructions. Add the two adjacent to the 5" gun sponsons/port side. Only three 40s are on the superstructures above the deck, the frwd mount being lost to the extended bridge. Total 40mm installed (Hull 8, bridge 3, deck/port side 0) overall, 11. Bert McD. (Late as usual). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: PT Dockyard Subject: Italian "Fasana" Class Minelayers Does anyone have or know where I can find drawings or good photos of the Italian "Fasana" class (Fasana, Durazzo, Buccari and Pelagosa) minelayers from WW2? I have a few pictures from a book on the Italian Navy but have been unable to turn up any more. The drawings need only be simple ones. Thanks! Dave Gregory The P.T.
